Katherine and Corey are returning home from a whirlwind honeymoon .. but it looks like trouble is brewing already.
All of a sudden, Katherine notices some changes in Corey ... he seems to be agitated and annoyed, losing patience over the smallest thing, even Katherine's young daughter. He always apologizes after their tiff, but something is really wrong.
She finds him hiding money, getting unknown text messages, and she's so confused these days, she doesn't know if she's coming or going ... or losing her sanity.
Maybe she doesn't know her husband as well as she thought she did.
This is a well written psychological drama with twists and turns leading to an unpredictable ending. I'm a little ambiguous about the ending ... it felt like it wasn't quite complete .. unless there is to be a second book in the making. The chapters alternate between versions of both parties ... not everything is as it seems to be.
3.5 STARS
The staccato writing and overkill on every little detail ruined this book for me. Every character sounded exactly alike, plus sounded very juvenile. I never really got a feel for any of them because so much of the book was just everyone reacting to things. They weren’t well-rounded at all; they were more like cardboard cut-outs. Very robotic. I actually had a hard time telling who was talking at any given time. The romantic involvements and friendships didn’t ring true, either.
And the repetitive minor details! I don’t know if they were just to add more words or what, but ugh. I wish that energy had been put into character development instead. This isn’t quoted from the book, but an example of the distracting and unnecessary details on pretty much every page, “I opened my car door and stepped onto the driveway. I walked to the front door and opened it with my key. I walked into the house and into the kitchen. I opened a cabinet door for a glass to get water. I saw mail sitting on the counter.”
This isn’t one I’d recommend. After exhibiting patience I didn’t realize I had, and reading it all, the ending stunk — scorched earth and a weak cliffhanger.
