4.4 4.4 out of 5 stars 6,131 ratings

In this thriller by the bestselling author of D for Dead, a woman is terrorised after returning to the town where she was almost murdered eighteen years ago.

The darkest minds hide the deepest secrets . . .

Lizzie Kent wasn’t supposed to babysit the night she was murdered. She was covering for her best friend, Nell. Nell has lived with the guilt ever since.

Eighteen years later Nell returns to the area, desperate to escape a bad relationship after inheriting her aunt’s rundown guesthouse. But her return isn’t welcomed by everyone—in particular Sam Kent, who blames Nell for his sister’s death. And after a few unsettling incidents, it becomes apparent that someone is trying to scare her.

Is Sam responsible or has Nell’s abusive ex-boyfriend managed to track her down? Or is someone else, with a more sinister agenda, responsible?

Previously published as The Darkness Beneath.

Deep Dark Secrets is an astonishing psychological thriller that will appeal to fans of authors like Clare Mackintosh, Cara Hunter, and Paula Hawkins.

About the Author

Susie Berneis is a versatile voiceover artist with numerous narration credits to her name. She has an ear for dialect and a love for the process of developing characters, which has been cultivated through her twenty-plus years of experience as a community and regional stage actress. Based in Ann Arbor (home of the University of Michigan, where she received her BA in English and theatre), she now takes great joy in playing all the characters she encounters in her narration.

Keri Beevis is a bestselling author who wrote her first novel at the age of twenty but didn't find success until twenty years later, after coming in as the runner up in the 2012 Rethink Press New Novels Competition. Since then, she has been living out her dream of becoming a writer.

I have lost sleep and meals going through this book with characters that are so linked, it is impossible to figure out the path. Your heart is beating but it settles down, to only begin again 10 pages later. Oh my goodness, well done. 36 hours, I'm done and onto the next one.

Its a good, quick easy to follow read. A few surprises in store but not difficult to figure out fairly early on who the main villain will turn out to be.

I was always two steps behind as I kept trying to figure out what was going on. This is the sixth book I have read of Keri Beavis in a month. I love her weighting style and the way everything in the end makes sense. If you haven’t read any of Keri’s books, start with this one and you will be as hooked as I am.

Overall, I enjoyed this book and finished it in two days. However, the use of British spelling throughout the book was surprising since all the characters were in the US. I had to go back to reread the first few pages since I wasn’t sure where the book was set based on the spelling! There were also the odd British descriptions thrown in-cheeky, decking; straightaway-that was also distracting. How the US editors missed these elements is a mystery.

I liked the plot, the characters, the setting. I think that Keri is an English writer and is not familiar with American terms, which threw me many times since I live in Massachusetts where the book takes place. Additionally, the gun laws is Mass are such that her boyfriend could not have bought a gun and then given it to her to use. I guess I'm saying....research, research, research. I will very likely read another one of Keri's book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Deep and dark – compelling reading

From the moment I began this novel I was sucked into its deep dark vortex and could not stop reading. It’s a perfect crime novel and brilliantly written. From the first chilling words – ‘someone was in the house’ – to the scenes where we are in the mind of the predator (?), stalker (?), killer (?), to the endearing main character Nell who has to live with a terrible secret, is being harassed by an ex boyfriend, all in the picturesque setting of Purity Island, which is not as ‘pure’ as it seems, the reader is led down these passageways of the past, and the deep and dark secrets are revealed as the story unravels to a surprising conclusion. A kaleidoscope of points of view make this compelling reading.

And of course I wanted to know if Purity Island was a real place (Trip Advisor gave me this photo - the closest I could find to the picture in my mind!)
