Reading this, I feel like I won a contest.
The story is so well crafted. You will definitely want to read books 1 and 2, but the story can stand on its own if you are picking this up first. Just be aware that there's more that takes place before this one and the sequencing would be best in order.
As for the elements of the story, this centers on the relationship of Flynn and Genesis, two women who have very different powers and who have to come to terms with how they intersect with the psychic community and its rules. The relationship is portrayed as loving and healthy, but not without its difficulties that must be addressed in the context of a series of challenges faced by them and by the community they are a part of.
There is more, but that would spoil the fun. Suffice it to say that this is a hero's journey too. And you get to see growth and character development of LOTS of well-defined people. There aren't any card-board cutouts or cliches here.

The other nice thing is that this works really well as a trilogy. I hope there will be more, but this is a satisfying close to the story if it does end here. Who knows where Elle e. Ire might take this world or these characters? If there's more, I'll definitely read it, but if this caps the story, I'm immensely satisfied with how it worked out.
