Publisher's summary

Unleashed magic. Secret pasts. Hidden worlds. Welcome to the Dark City.

My name's Morgan Rook, supernatural detective, undercover agent, odd jobs man. Call it whatever you like.

I take out the nightmares, demons, and werewolves. The things that lurk in the shadows around you. Guys like us call them Nightkind.

And here I was, set to quit this dark life and retire to sunnier climes, except for one final job. There's always one. This time a call to eliminate a cruel, rogue vampire, named Mr. Tudor. Simple, right?

Sure. Until the bodies started piling up in a new wave of vicious occult killings leading scarily close to my own front door, sparking a series of deadly events that would make my years of fighting the Nightkind look like a cakewalk.

Add high-octane chases across the city, a game of shadows, and undead assassins all topped off by a trip into the terrifying world between worlds - the last place you'd ever want to find yourself.

And the clues...they're all adding up to something...something big...and they're right in the palm of my hand.

The missing piece of the puzzle? How in the hell I fit into all of this....

Probably a good book ruined by horrible narrator.

I really wanted to like this book. I read the reviews and once Dresden comparisons came up in the review I was sold. That is until i started listening to the book and after finishing the book, I can’t tell you what it was about. The narrator was sooo boring and monotone that I had to increase the speed to 1.2 and I still couldn’t get into it. When Rook was confronting the antagonist, I couldn’t even remember who he was or how Rook knew him. I tuned out so many times because the narrator was bland, I would restart chapters trying to catch the story but by God, it couldn’t capture my attention and i would tune out again. I find that depressing because this is a series that I would have probably liked but not with the narrator.

Lots of action, weapons and supernatural creatures

The only improvement I recommend for Dark City is that it be longer! Morgan Rook, our supernatural detective, is himself still uncovering details of his parentage and early life in this first book, so I'm looking to future installments to provide more insight into Rook's character, taking us readers on a journey of discovery alongside his character. Lots of action, weaponry, and paranormal creatures kept me interested and curious about what strange thing would happen next. I'm sure the series will be great judging by how good this first book was!

Shawn Compton gives a fantastic narrative performance with plenty of energy and enthusiasm in each character he portrayed. Looking forward to the next book in the series!

Very Enjoyable

I received the audiobook in exchange for an honest review.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. It reminds me of Jim Butcher's Dresden Files series. Morgan Rook is a ..... bounty hunter a demons, I guess you'd say. He works for The Organization. He knows very little about his employers, but that doesn't seem to bother him. His past is somewhat murky, having been adopted from an asylum.

Morgan, besides working for the Organization, is also searching for Elsbeth Winter, a woman who killed Willow, the love of Morgan's wife. He gets caught up in a series of murders that the Organization doesn't really want him to poke his nose into. This leads to him learning more about himself and about a mentor from his past, Tom.

The story was well writing, descriptive, and flowed easily. I enjoyed Shawn Compton's voice narrating this. There were a few ups and downs with the recording, but those were minor and very few.

I'd be interested in reading/listening to more by Kit Hallows

Awesome Urban Fantasy & Enjoyable Listen

Dark City by Kit Hallows is Book 1 in The Order of Shadows series. This is a well written, has great world building, and the characters well developed and interesting. Morgan Rook (MC) has no memory before he was 10 when he awoke in an asylum. He is a supernatural detective who takes out the trash (bad guys) while looking for the witch who killed his girlfriend (the love of his life). The author's descriptive style builds a picture in your mind and keeps you reading to the end and wanting more. Take this awesome ride, you won't be sorry you did. Shawn Compton is an excellent narrator. He brings Morgan Rook to life. Received an audiobook ARC and this is my voluntary review.

Great detective story

This is a good supernatural detective story. The narration was perfect for it. It had a few slow points but overall very good.

Worth a listen!

Enjoyed this dark story, very intriguing main character that has the potential for great plot expansion. Narration was on point. It will be interesting to see how both the main character will develop and what secrets will be revealed.

This book was provided at no cost for a fair and honest review.
