Desperate Measures (Wicked Villains Book 1) Kindle Edition

4.3 4.3 out of 5 stars 9,707 ratings

Once upon a time, I was a sheltered princess. Now he owns me, body and soul.

One night, and my entire life went up in flames. All because of him. Jafar. As my world burned around me, he offered me a choice: walk away with nothing but my freedom…or rise to his challenge and win my fortune back.

I bargained.

I lost.

Now Jafar owns me, and even as my mind rails against him, my body loves the delicious punishments he deals out. It's almost enough to believe he cares. But a gilded cage is still a prison, and I'll do anything to obtain my freedom.

Even betray the man who captured my heart.

Desperate Measures Review
From Lala’s Book Reviews*clears throat* I would first off like to say that this book is VERY S-P-I-C-Y… so I would just like to throw that out there for all of my YA reader friends who aren’t into these types of books.Next, I’ll be completely honest and say that yes, I bought this book because of booktok. Do I regret it? No.Even before this book takes place, there was always that sizzle between Jafar and Jasmine in the years leading up to the start of this book. From the very beginning Jafar would never do anything to Jasmine without her approval (if you know what I mean) despite him being the “villain”. Sure he kidnapped her when the book first started but compared to the man who her father sold her to and was planning to hand over, Jafar was more respectful of women and their body. He wouldn’t let things go any farther if there was any doubt in his partner’s mind while the man bought Jasmine would take everything of her without even asking her. This book turns into an enemies to lovers situation when Jasmine is taken from one cage to another when Jafar takes her back to his penthouse, and very slowly the walls start to break between them, but can Jasmine really trust him when he keeps her captive and knowing that she is a pawn in some game?Honestly with the chemistry between Jasmine and Jafar, it could set a city on fire just with them being next to each other without a flame being anywhere near them; they are literally that explosive.Ever since Jafar met Jasmine before the book started, he knew that she was special. Even with her being certain ways behind close doors, she is a very strong-willed woman even when men want to keep her locked away behind a lock; she is constantly push this man who took her and could easily overpower her, but even with his tough exterior, Jafar can’t say no to Jasmine no matter how hard he tries (of course when it’s situations that isn’t life or death).Throughout the book, you can see that despite Jasmine and Jafar’s walls breaking and them getting closer in ways that either of them intended, Jasmine see has this deep soul calling yearning to be free of being a prisoner. Despite Jaraf wanting to have her in his life as the book progresses, he’s willing to set her free when things are safe for her and the danger is gone.It falls on Jasmine for her to take control of her life and decides what to do next.I can definitely same that I’m intrigued by this book with the whole “the villain of most stories is the main love interest” which doesn’t really surprise me considering how much I love morally gray book boyfriends.

I’ve been waiting to read this book and I gotta say I wish I read it sooner. I love this retelling of a classic. Yasmina and Jafar, omg I loved their interaction together. Truly a great read with characters that had me hooked. Can’t wait to read the next book.

The heat factor for the sex in this book is an easy 5/5. I enjoy that aspect and it's what made me hit the "buy" button after zipping through the sample. The sex toes the line between non consensual and consensual - which I think was done very well. The main character has a safe word, and no matter how much she fights this guy, she refuses to use the safe word and she acknowledges that their sex was her choice. Great work there.

So why did I give it three stars?

First of all, the "daddy" thing. That douses a cold bucket of water on the scene for me. Especially with how often she compares the love interest to her dad and wants to play out sex scenes in her dad's office. Big turn off for me. Keep the parental units out of the sex please, thanks. For anyone wondering, the "daddy" stuff comes in right after the book's sample part ends. I also find the term "baby girl" abhorrently irritating and completely pedophilic on the man's part. I don't want to read about bratty teens with daddy fetishes and pigtails, I want to read about grown-ass women getting railed by guys who know what the heck they're doing.

Second thing: The character started off utterly defiant and I loved it. She resisted this guy at every turn, threatened to kill him, tried to escape, and took every opportunity to tell him to go F himself. Then at some point, with almost no character development, she decides to be a docile submissive. I wasn't on board with it, I was still in "tell this guy to F off" land. I couldn't get behind the inconsistency. She's strong, she's trying to murder the intruder in her room, then she's shaking and scared and can't function without this guy carrying her everywhere. She just devolved into Mary Sue.

Third thing: The writing missed a lot of opportunities to make a slam dunk. For example, a character says "You're a gorgeous girl, and watching (insert hero here) F you was really something else." Really something else? That was the best we've got? Not -was the hottest thing I've seen since (insert personal thing here)-? Not -made me squirm-? Literally anything other than "really something else" would have taken that scene from "meh" to "I'm here for it." That was just one example of many missed opportunities to offer some depth into the thoughts and motives of the characters.

And on another point of the writing, the author spends a lot of time in the character's heads, reiterating what we already know from their actions. It's a delicate balance between "tell me what this person is thinking" and "please keep me in the moment with the action." For me, it's too much introspection and I found myself skipping a lot of prose in search of dialogue.

The TLDR: If you're here for the sex, you're in the right place. If you don't mind a "daddy fetish," you're also in the right place. If you can look past poor character development, you're going to be quite satisfied.

Wow this book was a little dark. But I loved it. I will be definitely reading the series. I am glad how it ended. I like the twist in it to.

This was not my first book by Katee Robert’s, and it will definitely not be the last. The first one was Neon Gods (yes, my TikTok algorithm new I was a spicy book reader without me even telling it). And let’s be honest I was always a huge Hades x Persephone fanatic even before I started reading spicy books.

As soon as I finished the Neon gods and realised that I have to wait for two months until the second book comes out, I was devastated, so I turned to my online friends asking for recommendations as to what of Katee Robert’s is also good. And I was recommended Wicked Villains series. At first glance I wasn’t into it, and so I did add it to my wish list but it wasn’t on my priorities. Looking back now I’m not sure whether my decision was correct or not, on one hand I immensely enjoyed the book and wished I read it sooner, but on the other hand, I’m happy I took my time before getting my hands on it and reading. Anticipation and all… p.s. the reason it jumped on the top of my TBR list was because it was on sale on amazon, so I said yeah let’s get it now.

But let’s dive into the book itself. First things first, I understood that I don’t like the endearment Daddy, or better said that I didn’t like Jasmine calling Jafar that. it sounded wrong and not in a good way. In the beginning I was like: hee, nice nice, by the middle of the book it was just cringey…

Count me insane, but the book didn’t ruin my childhood, it actually just gave life to my own twisted ideas of what if’s… yes, I was that kid who watched the cartoon, and then sat there thinking, hmm, what if Jafar was not evil, and Jasmine actually ended up with him. So in a roundabout way, the book just gave sustainment to my already raging imagination.

Now, back to the book, the writing was amazing, though honestly I loved Neon Gods so much more.. Sex was good, but every now and then I was thinking it was missing just something, maybe Jasmine was annoying me way too much. Plot twist at the end of the book? Chef Kisses!!!!!

And I just realised why I was so frustrated with the parts of the book. Jafar promised Jasmine so many different threesomes and orgy’s but we only got to see one! I demand a continuation and seeing even more dark and twisted sex!

Will I be getting the second book? That’s where I’m unsure, because the book will be about hades, and I’m conflicted. Because there can only be one Kate Robert’s Hades, so I’m not sure whether I’d want to read about another one.

Are you unsure whether you want to start this book? Give it a shot, you won’t be disappointed, and don’t worry your childhood is safe (provided that you’re not like me who already had those fantasies about villain getting the girl). And if you found Jasmine annoying too, send me a chat, I’d love to talk about it!

XOXO

Katie

If you CNC and lots of scenes with a little bit of plot this one is for you. This doesn't have a lot of plot nor character development but the smut is 🔥🔥🔥

I LOVE this story! And Jafar~♡

It's so hard to find stories quite dark enough for my tastes, but this story comes very close.

And the writing style really pulls you in as well. Not to mention the naughty scenes being an absolute delight.

I'll admit I am not a fan of safewords, and wished for a slightly different ending, with Jafar ruling...well... I won't spoil it.

But the ending was still very good. And the story even better.
