How to select a hitch ball mount

Enclosed Trailer Construction Towing CURT Ball Mounts

CURT Trailer Hitch Receiver

Three factors to consider

There are three main things to consider when selecting a trailer hitch ball mount: how much weight you are going to be towing, what size receiver tube your trailer hitch has and how much drop or rise your ball mount will need (below).

Trailer weight vs capacity

First, be sure to select a ball mount with enough gross trailer weight capacity to fit your trailer. Trailer weight is one of the most important aspects of towing, and you should never exceed the weight capacity of any component of your vehicle, trailer or trailer hitch setup.

Hitch receiver size

Next, determine what size shank you will need. Receiver tubes come in a handful of standard sizes, including 1-1/4, 2, 2-1/2 and sometimes 3 inches, so finding a ball mount to match is relatively easy.

How to determine drop or rise

After you know how much weight you will be towing and the size of your receiver tube, you will need to determine the drop or rise necessary for your trailer.

Drop or rise is the amount of height difference between the trailer and your tow vehicle, whether that difference is positive (rise) or negative (drop).

The diagram offers a quick explanation for how to determine your needed drop or rise. Take the distance from the ground to the top of the inside of your receiver tube opening (A), and subtract it from the distance from the ground to the bottom of the trailer coupler (B).

B minus A equals C, the drop or rise.

Product Description

CURT specialty ball mounts are a group of exceptional towing products, built to succeed where others fear to tread. From the back roads of overrun forests to the muddy fields of small town farms, towing looks a little different, and that means different demands on your towing equipment. CURT offers a full lineup of unique ball mounts that are made to tackle the rougher side of towing while still being able to fit a standard 2" x 2" receiver tube. Our forged tow hook mount is great for straight towing a vehicle and for other similar recovery towing applications. It measures 10" long and is designed specifically for a tow strap without hook ends. The gross trailer weight of the forged tow hook is limited to the hitch capacity. It is perfect for everything from full-size pickup trucks to ATVs and comes with a special black carbide powder coat finish to provide the corrosion, scratch and UV resistance needed to survive anything you throw its way.

    Saved me from rear-end damage!
I've had this on my Xterra for about a year now and about 2 months ago it saved me from someone who wasn't paying attention and rear ended my X. Based on my dash cam, we were going about 15 mph when traffic came to a stop and the driver behind me didn't stop. This hook broke right through the other vehicle's front bumper, crushed the foam on his crash bar, and even dented it. After having my X checked out, there was no damage to my X aside from some damage to the powder coat finish on this hook. If I didn't have this hook, I probably would have been looking at close $800 or more in damage, but instead I was able to drive away just needing a new tow hook. I will definitely be keeping one of these on my Xterra and any future trucks that I may own since it has already saved me once from a much larger headache. On the downside, the powder coat finish seemed to fade pretty quickly on mine. After a few months it turned from a glossy black to a matte black. I preferred the gloss black, since it matched my tow hitch, but I'm hoping the new hook that I just ordered doesn't do the same thing.

Reviewed in the United States on April 21, 2019
This was shipped really fast and came in a good sealed box. It is solid and will work for you. Some say it is loose in the receiver and rattles going down the road, that is correct, it is loose and it does rattle. I took some duct tape and wrapped it around the area that goes inside so you do not see the tape and it tightened up good enough for me.
As far as the finish goes I have not had it long enough to say, but if it does fade I know where to get a can of black spray paint. Photo is an F150 and the hook sticks out 7 inches from the bumper. I like it sticking out cause I tend to back into things now and then so it saves my bumper.
UPDATE: Well, it has been 9 months since I put this on my truck and the glossy shine of the paint has faded a bit but it has not rusted or has the paint chipped off. If you use a chain with it you may scratch or chip the finish. Straps are ok.
