By following the user manual, I connected my Switch console (with its HDMI cord) to the video capture card, which was plugged into my laptop's USB port.
The manual also had instructions about "OBS", which I was confused with since it didn't say it was a video capture software that needed to be downloaded - I figured this out from looking at the Amazon.com product listing images. I did get OBS but only after trying out VLC media player that I already had. Here are my results with screenshot photos of my fav Twitch streamer (FYI Twitch.tv is downloadable on Nintendo Switch):
- In VLC through "Media > Open Capture Card...", I was able to display gameplay with sound, but my view was a tad pixelated and blurry no matter what size I selected through "Video > Aspect Ratio". I'm not a techie person, and since I couldn't easily find a solution online, I gave up on VLC.
- The manual wasn't detailed enough about how to use OBS, so I followed a Twitch streamer's YouTube video. Turns out there are a lot of steps (more than VLC), but I didn't get too lost, and in the end, the gameplay display looks great! I even linked OBS to my Twitch account - so if I get the right mic and am a better gamer, who knows but I could start streaming too :)
BTW, the video capture card gets pretty warm when in use, but that's not a surprise.

Expect compression artifacts though, especially in dark areas. The raw signal has artifacts that can be seen in the live feed which if your streaming will be compressed a second time. Double compression is never good and can potentially look pretty bad.
I've noticed some hitching too, like a duplicated frame or two every second. Audio is slightly out of sync with video and there is some noticeable input lag (probably expected).
I'd give this thing fewer stars but it's just so dang cheap that the issues are easy enough to overlook.
I have been pleasantly surprised.
Some tips:
* definitely needs USB 3.0 power. I accidentally plugged in to a 2.0 and it kept erring out every 15-20 mins or so (with some cool retro color bars) it's lasted about 30 mins+ on USB 3.0. UPDATED BELOW
* does not stream directly in 4k. I will most likely need to research this further, but it seems as if the maximum it can stream in is 1080p 60fps. Minus 1 star for this.
* many cameras will need to be fiddled with to get clean HDMI, aka removing focus bars and/or info. You'll need to figure out what works for your specific camera.
UPDATE: discovered that the limited length of livestreaming (30 minutes) is actually based upon file formatting for my Canon m50. I found a workaround for this (opening up the EOS Utility and plugging the Capture card along with usb connection directly from the camera) and have been able to run over an hour with no issues. I've updated my review to 4 stars because of this.
