4.2 4.2 out of 5 stars 314 ratings

Benny DeMarco is the nicest guy you’ll ever meet. He works hard, takes care of his little sister, and pays the bills. Childhood bullies and an abusive stepfather invade his dreams, and at times he wishes life would grant him a do-over. Would he like a boyfriend? You bet. But Benny knows love isn’t for him. He’s been looked over, looked through, and looked past all his life. Even worse, the one guy he’s been in love with for almost two years is the biggest flirt who will sleep with anyone. Anyone except Benny.

Gino Acosta smiles to keep from crying. Everyone he meets tells him he’s beautiful and sexy, but Gino knows the truth. His outside may be perfect, but inside he feels dirty and unworthy. Bounced around as a child, he yearns for someone to love and a family to call his own. He hops from man to man, desperate to belong, believing the lies he’s told, but all he finds is a body for an hour or two. Things would be so different if only he knew—the man he’s searching for is waiting for him, right under his nose.

Benny starts dating the “perfect guy”and it’s okay if there’s no spark—that’ll happen eventually. Won’t it? Gino’s fast-paced modeling career has taken off, but once again, he’s trading his body for a dream. When Gino’s world explodes, Benny must fight for what and who he really wants. Gino must learn to trust what people tell him—that he’s got so much more to offer than a pretty face and a moment of pleasure.

If all your life you believe you’re nothing, how do you move past heartbreak and hardship to reach for everything?

When Felice Stevens decides to toss in the angst, she doesn't do it with a shovel. Rather, she mounts the back hoe and just dumps it all over her MCs and leaves them under a pile of dirt and rubbish that needs more than a couple of friends to clean up the mess.

Such is the case with Benny Demarco and Gino Acosta, two lower middle class late 20's from Brooklyn who work at the gym owned by Jeremy Strauss of "Perfect," one of the three books in Stevens' Soulmates series. In that one Jeremy was pushing these two together but without much success.

The reasons are fully explored in the opening chapters of this one--mostly because both Benny, who is the operations manager of the gym, and Gino (on the cover), the stunning model-in-training and all around customer service guy at the gym, have identical trust issues as well as very similar personal family histories of abuse and neglect. The back and forth between these two is shaped in the first two POV chapters where they admit to the reader that the other one is the crush of his life.

After that we are on a sometimes gut-wrenching but eventually smoldering and then scorching issues-plagued romance that brings in Benny's friend, the ex-con Justin and his lover Foster from the first book in the series . Eventually we also renew acquaintance with Asher Devin from "A Walk Through Fire" from her To Hell & Back series aa well as Oren Leavitt from "One Call Away" in the Soulmates series.

This is a brilliant way of bringing in a wide cross section of gay men from all walks of life and social and economic backgrounds to deal with two young men who are absolutely perfectly drawn for who they are supposed to be and where they come from.

Trust me on this--I'm from the outer boroughs and know Manhattan like the back of my hand and am constantly astounded at how Ms. Stevens gets everything right about New York City and its opportunities, drawbacks, prides and prejudices. In the end this is what makes this book work, and when it takes off, there's no turning back.

I think everyone who reads this one will know which characters may get their own book in the future, but until then this one is another jewel in the increasingly heavy crown of virtual perfection that sits on Ms. Stevens' head.

Benny and Geno, what can I say about these two. They were definitely a little messed up in their personal lives, Geno more so than Benny. Geno really struggled to overcome the mental and physical abuse he suffered from his foster brother while Benny hid his struggles better, he too had issues. When it came together they really made a great couple and help each other.

I think the book drag on just a little bit. And the insecurities were a little over-the-top for me. But all in all it was a good book.

Abused hearts and souls are both endearing and frightening. Endearing because we want to hug and console. Frightening because they are oh so familiar and painful, either as memories or friends in crisis. Felice handles the personalities and complexities involved with compassion and familiarity of subject. Each character finds a home in our heart or a cell in the prison of our imagining. Engaging and impossible to leave behind.

This was a middle of the road read for me. I cared about the MCs but it got very melodramatic with one thing after another piled on top of them.

I thought this was a pretty good story I really felt bad for Gino and Benny was highly likable, all around and for the most part the story was lovely and the sex scenes were well done. Was a little rushed in terms of trauma recovery but had a nice happy ending I’d love to read more by this author

Benny and Gino have been sitting in the back of my mind for a year and a half. Getting a tease of their attraction in Perfect wasn't nearly enough. I wanted more of them. And now I have them.

There are so many components to their story. This isn't the case of two men who are attracted to each other, hook up and ultimately fall in love. There is so much more to these men. Rock Bottom pretty accurately describes where Benny and Gino are. Their story will break your heart before it heals it.

I'm not going to recap every heartbreaking moment. You can read the book for that. What I will say is that to my first impressions of Benny and Gino were very very wrong. I always figured Benny to be the sweet, shy guy, while Gino was a player through and through.

Now don't get me wrong. Benny IS shy and sweet but he's also got this quiet strength about him. This guy is resilient. He knows what he has to do and does it. He doesn't complain or whine. He just takes care of things. Often to his own detriment.

Gino really surprised me. I knew he was going to turn out to be a good guy but I had no idea what he would do to my heart. Underneath his shiny and pretty surface, lies a tattered and torn soul. His story was tough to read. One scene in particular broke my heart and I couldn't help but cry for him. He turned out to be the one that I wanted to wrap in my arms so I could take away his pain. And I've never wanted to castrate a bunch of men more than I did with some of the guys in this book.

But let's talk Benny and Gino and how they went from friends to lovers. I liked seeing their relationship evolve. I knew they'd get there but their journey wasn't easy. And as much as I didn't always like it, the actions of others did ultimately allow them to see that they were meant to be together.

What I loved most about Benny and Gino's story was seeing how their friends stepped up and supported them unconditionally. If you're a follower of Ms. Stevens' work, you know that Benny and Gino's friends are featured in other books. Ms. Stevens also brings in a surprise character that will make fans of hers jump for joy. Seeing all of these beloved characters standing up for Benny and Gino made my heart happy. They say it takes a village but Ms. Stevens did Benny and Gino one better....she gave them a family.

Oh, such heartbreak for both main characters. Benny and Gino were so broken. They have been best friends for a long time, not realising that they were perfect for each other. Angsty, emotional, heartwrenchingly beautiful.... I loved it

What a sad but will written story about strength, love and believe.
Gino and Benny had similar abuse growing. Every one saw what they wanted them to see. Not until things turned difficult did their true self showed.
Benny had a crush on Gino since they met, but of course thought he was not good enough. Same went for Gino.
I could not keep trying to picture those guys younger, especially Benny with his step father. Many a time my eyes swelled with tears and my heart felt anguish for Gino .
Abuse weather physical or emotional is such a paralyzing emotion. You just want to give a big hug of support.
I really enjoyed this book.
People from other series were mentioned which made book seem so real

I've read many books by this author and I even vaguely remembered Hard Core Gym so I was intrigued to see where this book went. Unfortunately for me it was a let down. I didn't love the start but it was okay, I gave the author the benefit of the doubt and hoped it'd pick up as the story moved on. Unfortunately that wasn't the case, Gino and Benny had issues and while those in themselves were understandable given their pasts it was the constant rehashing of them every chapter, every interaction that grew on my nerves. If I'd felt they were expanding on these past hurts, or at least making progress dealing with them then i would had understood the talking about them but these interactions always felt forced or even an over share in some cases. Unfortunately for me the whole book just wasn't believable, everything was a bit over the top and surface deep and I didn't believe in Benny and Gino as a couple at all. Overall not for me.
