Review

***** (Five Stars) This is probably the best book I read in this series. - Paul M

"You can see the battles unfold as if you are right there, and his descriptions of the technicalities of battleships, interstellar travel, and weaponry are clear, concise, and interesting. The characters are genuine, dialogue rings true, and I especially enjoy his 'peoples' from other planetary systems." - Marcia K

"Damn you can write some stuff that just leaves me wanting more Mr. VanDyke!" - John P

"Worthy ending to an awesome series."
- Niover H.

B.V. Larson's Star Force Series with David VanDyke:

- Star Force #10: Outcast

- Star Force #11: Exile

- Star Force #12: Demon Star

The Galactic Liberation Series is David VanDyke's latest, a grand saga of struggle against human tyranny and alien danger. Personal adventures, mechsuit combat, and space fleet battles mesh seamlessly in this page-turning series of epic books in the mode of Honor Harrington, Starship Troopers and Star Wars.

The Plague Wars apocalyptic thriller series begins in the world of today with a man and a woman twined together by circumstances, destined to change the world. It leads readers into an ever-darkening future of upheaval, struggle and war marked by the depths of evil and the heights of selfless sacrifice. Plagues, secret technologies and extraterrestrial meddling provide the backdrop for heroes and villains to struggle for control of the destiny of humanity.

The Stellar Conquest series carries the central cast of Plague Wars forward a century into the future, when humanity turns to the stars to find its destiny. Follow the starship Conquest as its captain and crew take the fight to Earth's enemies, finding allies and making heroic sacrifices in order to secure the future of our solar system against a hostile universe. Read it first and then its prequel series Plague Wars, or read it in order from The Eden Plague onward if you prefer.

The Star Force Series is a sweeping space opera and military sci-fi saga of alien invasion, telling the story of one ordinary man, Professor Kyle Riggs, who rises to become Earth's most implacable defender. In book 10, Outcast, his son Cody Riggs, fresh out of Star Force academy, takes over the legacy. With more than a million copies sold, this top-rated science fiction series sweeps readers into adventure.

I have to say from the outset that I am an unashamed Vandyke fan.

I find it strange that Vandyke’s books don't seem to be more popular (at least going by the number of reviews). There are two series of books that I've read penned by this author, they are the “Plague Wars” and “Stellar Conquest”. Stellar Conquest to the continuation of the Plague Wars series but can be read on its own merits and stands up well. In fact my first introduction to the authors work was through the novella “First conquest” which has been made into a stand-alone book.

To my mind if you've read Larson, Brown, Harris, Nuttall, Heppner, Kloos, Weil or a number of other authors in this genre you couldn't fail to like these books. In fact I would say that, to me at least, they're even a little bit harder hitting than some… sometimes when the storyline gets to a knife edge and you think “ohh, how are they going to get out of that”? or “well that won't happen”, they don't and it will!

With regards to this book, I think Conquest and Empire is a worthy end to the series, I was a little critical of the penultimate installment because I thought it was a great book spoilt by a slightly weak ending. I’m glad to say that Vandyke put things right with this one! There’s a great (and large) cast of characters that have been well developed over the two series and although they're not all here at the end they are all memorable! Very enjoyable books and series, do yourself a favor and read them.

The first half of the book moved at a normal pace and the moment the war started, it was pages after pages of intense reading and because this is supposedly the last book for the series, an awful lot of events happened and cramped in the last third part of the book.
One star off for one-dimensional characters but five star actions and plot!

This has been a great series, from start to finish, starting with the Plague Wars and then the Stellar Conquest series. What I really appreciated about this series was that the author masterfully starts the reader from a place of familiarity -- the everyday, normal world. The reader isn't required to learn a whole new universe, new rules, new technologies in the very first chapter of the first book of the series. He starts from a completely familiar place and takes the reader on a journey into a very new place with new technology and new civilizations. The reader gets to learn as the characters learn. This made both the Plague Wars and Stellar Conquest series a very easy space opera to get deeply involved with.

Nicely done, Mr. VanDyke. I wish more writers would take such a careful approach to immersing the reader in a whole new world.

this whole series has been great. this book is no exception to that. the "final battle" wasn't what I was expecting and that made it even better than I had hoped. Spookies "revelations" to his old mentor gave me the willies as I was reading them. The "starship" AI's at the end, never would have expected, or even though about what the author did with them. thinking back the evidence was there, all in hindsight but until I reached the end I didn't see it. even what he did with the Ryss was interesting and unexpected, despite all the evidence saying that's exactly what should happen. this guy has become one of my all time favorite sci-fi authors.

I've liked this entire series. While the writing and story are not on par with the great sci-fi writers, the story moves along at a brisk pace, with just enough character development to keep a reader engaged. If you're like me and love a good plot-line, this you'll find this series a good read.

This was a great final book in a string of wonderful books, beginning with the Plague Wars series (still being written-to) and progressing through the five books of the Stellar Conquest series.

It has been a fantastic ride, each book with a new set of twists and rolls through the fabric of a plausible galaxy starting in our own times today. His characters have remained with us, a collection of dutiful, farsighted, a-political (with one fascinating and initially, highly unlikely exception), honorable men and women who break stereotypes.

As a series, I feel it's best to state all of this up-front, so I'll copy most of this commentary to my review of the first book, and refer all my later five-star reviews back to that one.

Thanks, David, to the stupendous ride from our near future and out into the Galaxy!

The aliens have been able to attack the humans and meme and all the different types of aliens that were not Scourge but they have now been beaten repeatedly. The humans must now expect them to attack in a larger version of its all-out destroy-all and eat everything plan. The humans are not willing to be destroyed by the enemy, so they must find a way to defeat the enemy completely. They should take the fight to the enemy leadership.

I have to say right off, this is probably the best book I read in this series. The vibrance of the story, the realistic tone the book conveys, the creativity of Mr. Vandyke, it is all just stellar writing. If you have not started this series, you must. If there is anyway I can convince Mr. Vandyke to keep writing this amazing series of novels, I will be up for that challenge if its not life or financially threatening. I would really want to keep reading these amazing books until humanity is sure of itself in the galaxy. Stellar job Mr. Vandyke I will probably love your future writings just as much.

I have just finished the plague war books, from beginning to end, and this review is based all the books.

Certainly the theme of the books is believable, if you are a fan of science fiction as are the protagonists (I am torn as to my favourite but it is probably 'Skull' Denham, followed closely by the reaper).

The narrative is very good but I think that the timescales are all wrong, as are some of the placings of the characters (one in particular comes to mind is where Trissk has accompanied Bogrin, Spooky and Ezekiel Denham on board Roger, but in the next chapter he is with Admiral Absen on board Conquest). This is a schoolboy error where the author was more concerned with content than continuity.

Grammar errors abound in each of the books.

Having said that, I thoroughly enjoyed reading these books and look forward to reading the authors other works.
