My Day One Cheryl: I'm Coming Back Kindle Edition
Cheryl Rose Campbell is on a course of redemption and hopeful reconciliation with a woman who stole her heart over praise and worship. Cheryl, a celebrated contemporary gospel singer, knew the moment she created her first song with Tabitha Scott that the music director and minister had the power to break down her walls.
Cheryl had been wearing a mask for years, in fear that her real self would not only destroy her successful career but would threaten her family's safety. American-born but of Nigerian descent, Cheryl's mother migrated to the U.S. with her teenage son, Ayodele, carrying Cheryl in her womb. Their mother's love was strong and unwavering as she gave up everything she owned, including her career as a principal, to seek asylum in America. Because of Ayodele's mother, Cheryl's brother was saved from persecution in a Nigerian prison or death by stoning for identifying and living as a yan daudu, a "man who acts like a woman."
Young Cheryl grew up in fear of the repercussions of such a fate, even in America. The Black Church might not beat the lesbian out of her, but Cheryl knew her career would suffer if she were open about her sexuality like Christian artists such as Whitney James.
But the price of her secret included the loss of Tabitha Scott. Until one day, Cheryl decided it was time to take a walk in faith. When she convinces Tabitha to help her with her latest album, Cheryl hopes that this reunion will include rekindling a love she's never forgotten.
Will Tabitha walk down memory lane with Cheryl and trust the woman who broke her heart? Find out as their story unfolds in Book One of the My Day One series.

Gospel singer Cheryl “Rose” Campbell found herself in a bad place after being outed by a vindictive one night stand. So where do you go when your management ditches you and you fall out of favor with your fans of faith? You go home.
With the support of old friends, family and community, Cheryl works her way back to where she always
belonged. The support she received was amazing and a reminder to keep those who truly want the best for you close.
I loved all the colorful characters, but especially thee Reverend Tabitha Scott who all the church ladies seemed to be willing to get into some unholy business with. Only Ms. Scott has always had eyes for the one and only Rose Campbell she was all but ready to usher back into her flock. Their dynamic was 🥵. But not too hot now! 👀 I was definitely rooting for them. I loved how protective Tab was of her.
Don’t let the God in her fool you. She’s a staunch defender of those she loves and isn’t afraid to whoop some ass. My favorite scene was the most hilarious and painful, where they had to physically fight back against hate on behalf of their trans sister. The way they beat those fools with their own bats. 😭
This read wasn’t all joy, but it was all beautiful. Rose’s journey back to God was as fulfilling as it was to watch her fall back into the Reverend's arms. It’s layered in its themes, from identity and church politics to career and loving in aging bodies.
At the heart of this story is a message of forgiveness, found family, second chances and unconditional love.
Though my faith isn’t what it once was, this story hit me with all the nostalgiaz. The music Auntie Lee took the extra care in putting together for this book brought me all the way back to my choir days. It was always a fun time. Bible study, potlucks and gatherings where we got into all kinds of shenanigans when we were supposed to be praying. 👀
This is one of those stories that stick with you.
From the club to the pulpit, this was an amazing read. You won’t be disappointed. One of Aunt Lee’s best in my not so humble opinion and definitely one of my favorites.
You did your thing with this one!
The scenes in this book, from the club scene to the battle at the front of the church reminds me so much of my life. Having grown up in the church (my grandfather was a minister and my family is heavily involved in the church from all aspects) I could relate to Cheryl wanting to be her authentic self as I had that same battle when I decided to come out to my family.
Chapter seven is one of a great high and some downright sensual dancing between the MCs on the dance floor. It is also where we see the depiction of hate that is all too real in this world.
I love Cheryl, but Rev. Tabitha Scott also is an example of so many people I have known in and out of the church. I love that she is confident in her sexuality, but we see her vulnerability in one of my many favorite scenes in the book in Chapter Four when she and Cheryl visit with the Gospel Girls and she asks the question “Then how did she get those pictures?”
This is a story that will resonate with you regardless of your spirituality or sexuality as it goes deeper into us as humans. I was touched by the words on the pages as well as the songs, specifically crafted for the characters that enhanced the story and let us feel as though the characters are real. I can’t recommend this book enough and if I could give it 10’s across the board, it would be done and I would keep coming back again and again!
Tabitha is out, has a family, and leads an inclusive church where an array of women vie for her attention. But Cheryl is deeply ensconced in the closet with a successful career as a celebrated gospel diva until she's unceremoniously outed. Her reputation and career take a tremendous hit. Her record label and manager drop her immediately and she's left broken and alone under the weight of mistakes, lies, shame, regret, and betrayal.
However, Tabitha calls in the Queenmaker, who specializes in redeeming, restoring, and rebranding broken celebrities, to help Cheryl but it's not that simple. Both of our MCs seem to want to keep their distance while they pine for one another but are weary of a future.
What follows is a story of forgiveness, risk and learning to trust, redemption, second chances, found family, and unconditional love filled with complex colorful characters of depth and substance, both main and supportive. While there are challenges and hurdles to face including a night of possibilities turned violent, there's also music with an in-book soundtrack, laughter, bravery, and healing.
At its core, Tabitha and Rose's complicated love story while traveling an uncharted rocky path is surrounded by other blossoming love stories all leading to finding home.
This is a wonderful, vibrant, and hopeful story that is an absorbing and engaging read that I highly recommend.
I received an ARC from the author and I'm happy to leave an honest review.
