Certain Dark Things Kindle Edition

The page-turning follow-up to the sizzling Fragmentary Blue...

When off-duty officer Chris Andersen interrupts an assault and uses deadly force, Internal Affairs Inspector C.J. St. Clair is assigned to the case. Her first point of contact is Captain Alex Ryan, Andersen’s boss... and C.J.’s new girlfriend.

Candidates for District Attorney would love to use the case to bolster their platforms, and both sides pressure C.J. to find in favor of their version of events. Alex fears that Chris, an open lesbian, will be hung out to dry by Colorado politics, regardless.

As the media and political tensions escalate, Alex offers moral support to Chris while friction between her and C.J. rises as well. Though they both knew their relationship would be tested by their work, neither of them thought it would be this hard.

Erica Abbott doesn’t describe this as a series but the continuation of Alex and CJ’s story is as great a read as the first. Engaging, romantic, great crime solving, great characters, humor and just plain great reading.

Book two in the series centers around an off duty shooting by one of Alex's detectives. Alex gets a little too close to the detective for CJ's comfort and outside forces jump at the opportunity to use this incident for their own advantage. It's another good story and a few more supporting characters are added to the mix.

An action-packed, entertaining story with interesting characters & riveting plot lines. It was a very enjoyable read. I recommend this book.

I enjoyed both this and Fragmentary Blue very much. The characters are strong., likeable.,and interesting. It is best to read them in sequence as relationship issues in second book are rooted in those introduced in the first. New author/series that will be on our personal watchlist

I loved Certain Dark Things by Erica Abbott. Excellent continuation of the CJ and Alex series. Great combination of thriller and romance.

Certain Dark Things by Eric Abbott is a satisfying sequel to Fragmentary Blue. C.J. St. Clair and Alex Ryan are back, with C.J. now assigned to Inspector of Internal Affairs for the Colfax, CO. police department, and her partner, Alex Ryan, in charge of the Detective Bureau. The story begins with off duty detective Chris Andersen interrupting an assault and using deadly force when she is threatened with a weopon. Complicating matters is a heated race for the office of District Attorney. The candidate running against the current district attorney has been claiming that Colfax police are guilty of police brutality. The present district attorney just happens to be Alix's ex husband. CJ's job is to investigate the shooting, and to see if it was justified. Alix's job is to give Chris moral support while the incident is being investigated.

What follows is a wonderful description of the stress work can put on a relationship, particularly when the couple works on the same site. C.J., Alex, and Chris are fully developed characters. The love between C.J. and Alex is solid, and rich with healthy sex! Chris is young and has yet to find a true loving relationship. Add to this the political wrangling along with a dastardly plot to discredit the police department, and you have a book which is hard to put down. Certain Dark Things is a solid read on both fronts: the police story and the love story!

It's probably me, but I didn't enjoy this book nearly as much as the first one. Don't get me wrong, it's well written and a good story, but it was very intense. I found the intensity to be too much, without enough of a payoff at the end. The author should have spent more time on the resolution of the romance aspects at the end. Circumstances were agonizing for Alex and CJ and then just sort of over. There was lots of conflict in the relationship, too much I think. And I think the character of Chris needs more development. The mystery part was sort of obvious very early on, but how it all happened and got figured out was interesting. It wasn't error-free. There were a handful of errors (a wrong tense, several missing words, a missing comma, and a typo) but they weren't too egregious.

4.0 out of 5 stars Gute Fortsetzung von Fragmentary Blue
Reviewed in Germany on June 24, 2014

I loved the story. It's always nice to read about two people you got to know in a book before but I had difficulties to copy with this annoying Chris Anderson. Life is hard as it is and a certain young person who thinks she is the best in the world and gets what she wants is just... Anyway it's working out. Because true love always wins. And don't forget the thrilling plot. ;)
