What’s missing? Depending on your need, the time-code function, which is already a headache to use, does not work when you shoot video at 120 fps. At least not that I have found a way to configure. Why would you need that? You don’t…until you film with the intention to edit for slow-mo(tion) post edits. Is this a major limitation? Not really, but it means that you have a little more work in post. Not the biggest of annoyances, BUT, it would have been nice for Rode to state the limitations. For me, as someone who films fast sports while “talking about it”, this is a bit of a downer and has me considering whether I should return the set. Difficult decision, because the rest is darn good!
Why 5-stars instead of 4?
Because the limitation is so minor, that it really is mostly a nit-picky annoyance with Rode’s inability/unwillingness to clearly state what can and cannot be accomplished with your $400+ investment. Sure, sales spin and omissions are strategic, yet, I’d expect better from Rode.
The fact that the two transmitters go to a single receiver which requires no external power source is super convenient for many performance situations. You can use these with a battery powered amp/speaker and amplify your accordion wirelessly without requiring an electrical outlet at all – ideal for busking. The transmitters have a long range and can be used in strolling performances. In most cases, you will need an eighth inch to quarter inch adapter.
For the keyboard side on a piano accordion, use velcro tape to attach one of the transmitters to the lower part of the grille, with the microphone pointing upwards. The high notes will be louder than the lower notes, but overall, the volume will sound more stable over the range of the keyboard than it would if you were to put the transmitter at the top facing down, or in the middle facing toward the keyboard.
On the button side, thread a velcro strap through the clip of the other transmitter and strap it to the outer side of the bass strap, so the microphone is pointing upwards. Cut the velcro strap to shorten it if needed so it fits snugly around the bass strap.
If you can find a black acrylic paint pen, I recommend painting over the blue lights on the transmitters; you’ll still be able to see the lights to know whether the transmitters are connecting, but they’ll be less glaringly bright on stage.
You can use these mics for recording also, but it would only make sense to do so in a live performance setting. For studio recording, it would make more sense to use stationary mics.
There are a few limitations to be aware of:
1) You cannot adjust the input gain, only the output gain. If there is noticeable distortion, there is no way to turn down the input gain, you’ll have to find a way to mount the transmitters differently. When I play on the bass side, the receiver indicates that there is some distortion, but it’s subtle enough that it probably wouldn’t be noticed in a performance setting. The sound quality is actually quite good.
2) You cannot adjust the volume of the two mics independently. If the keyboard side is too quiet, the only options are to mess with the EQ on the amp/speaker/mixer or to try adjusting the mic placement.
3) These mics are omnidirectional, which I think is idea for this kind of setup, but you’ll have to be extra careful about feedback issues.
I only just finished setting up and testing these mics, with guidance from a sound engineer friend. haven’t used them in performance yet. I will update this review if I encounter any issues. So far they seem like a great option for accordionists to know about.

After talking with Rode Customer Service I have found that the usbC cables are not meant to be affected by the Level setting. I read the online User Guide for the Wireless ME twice before submitting my original review. There was no mention about the limitations of the usbC cords. I was assured that marketing would update the User Guide to note that the 3.5mm cables must be used for the Level setting to take effect.
I changed to 4 stars because the ME is great other than the advertising pictures. The influencer shots are still misleading for a plug and play product. They're using the usbC adapter with their phone, so if they don't normalize or master the track after filming, then their video will be half as loud as EVERY other video on EVERY social media platform.
Original Review:
Comparing against the DJI and the Shure MVL/Rode Lav ii/Powerdewise lav
Something's gotta be wrong with me, right? Why do I expect a product targeted towards social media videos to produce a sound as loud as the typical social media video? I don't know why! The youtube reviewers lauding this thing and the other reviewers are all trying convince me that I'm inept. I'm hard to gaslight, though, so here's the review.
First off, and most importantly, using the iOs Rode Central app: the "Level," output does absolutely nothing. The settings are high-med-low. There is no discernable difference between that setting. This is where I think the problem is. Spending $150 on a mic shouldn't get me a significantly quieter video than just plugging the Rode Lavalier ii straight into the iPhone. But it does. Meaning the output for the receiver is likely stuck to low.
There is a way around it. Using their other app (Rode Capture) you can raise the level of the mic. It starts to distort but at least it's at the volume comparable to the DJI.
Everything else about this is absolutely fantastic and perfect. I want to give it 5 stars, but the whole point of this is to skip mastering or processing the heckin track.
I'm better off with no auxiliary audio and just using the phone mic. That's not hyperbole. Yes, I checked. I made over 30 (10-30 second) videos comparing different configurations. A couple of them were just of me speaking into the phone at arms length.
That's the end of the review. I'm now going to list all of my findings in an attempt to show my work and validate my complaint -
-First off I updated the firmware of the TX and RX.
-I reset the devices multiple times throughout the process to see if turning on/off the device would help
with the device settings.
-Using a Shure MVL, Rode Lav ii and Powerdewise I can confirm that everything sounds great. Also, that a TRRS to TRS adapter is necessary.
- By, "great," of course I mean, "great... but quiet."
-Turning off the Gain Assist made no difference for how loud the video got.
-The difference between Auto and Dynamic for the Gain Assist for me speaking normally into a normal lav placed around my sternum was dismissible.
-The Gain Assist itself works amazingly well when I tried to peak the audio.
-I went through every possible configuration for the "Level" on the receiver, the "Gain Assist" on the transmitter, and the lavaliers I have (including the built-in TX mic). All videos were half the volume of what I get out of my DJI or just a straight up Powerdewise straight into the phone. Again, unless I used the Rode Capture app.
-I think "Level" setting is bugged and causing the issue
THE RODE CAPTURE APP LOSES AUDIO! That's it. During the tests sometimes the audio would just stop working. I would watch it stop working. Without pressing anything the levels would sometimes randomly drop to zero. I would reset the app and it would be right back up. No trouble with the iOs camera.
My workaround is dependent on an unreliable app.
If it's just a bug that they address before my return window is up, then I will happily update my review to 5 stars. Amazon only lets me upload one video for the review. I chose the "High Level" using the Rode Lav ii and the iOs camera app.
Thanks for listening to me whine. :)
