Resurrected Iconic Drum Echo — in Pedal Form

The old Binson Echorecs were amazing (originally tube-powered) drum echo machines that made it possible to achieve stunning timed delays of up to 300ms. Dr. Bonfiglio Bini produced well-built, thoughtfully designed mechanisms with beautifully musical output — even running without the delay engaged would enhance any guitar's tone. But touring was always a sketchy proposition with the fragile vintage machines. So at Sweetwater, we're glad to see that Catalinbread has given new life to Dr. Bini's invention in the form of the Catalinbread Echorec Binson-style Delay pedal. The Echorec delivers a digital replication of the original's 4-head functionality, plus variable timing by way of the Delay Time control — something that wasn't possible with the Binson machine. You can access all 12 head configurations via the Program Select knob; you also get feedback control with the Swell knob, timbre options via the Tone knob, and a Mix control that's variable from 100% dry to 100% wet.

Intelligent design, then and now

Dr. Bini's early drum echo machine was high-tech in its time and remains a work of art. It was used extensively by psychedelic and rock artists from the 1950s through the 1970s to achieve mysterious swelling echoes and syncopated rhythmic patterns of repeated notes without tape artifacts (like "wow" and flutter). The Echorec's remarkable blend of aesthetic appeal and functional electronics have made it a favorite among collectors and players alike. It gives you all 12 combinations of playback "head" positions (on the original, not all 12 combinations were available for use), and all the function controls are positioned topside for easy manipulation. The Echorec's massive functionality is packaged with unique, attractive graphics (like all Catalinbread pedals) on a durable metal chassis with a high-quality footswitch, for long-lasting, satisfying ownership and performance.

Precise control provides creative freedom

The up-front control knobs are not the only dynamic features of the Catalinbread Echorec Binson-style Delay Pedal. The unit's discrete two-transistor preamp driver circuit adds oomph and lively intensity to your guitar tone, with no buffers. Remove the rear panel and you'll also find an internal trim pot for setting the global gain level, a true-bypass/buffer ("Trails" mode) slider switch, and trim control over the modulation. This all adds up to a robust structure with enough control to catalyze creativity without cramping your style.

Catalinbread: gear that makes you want to play

The self-avowed gearheads at Catalinbread focus on making musical devices they want to use — "gear that gets us excited and inspires us to play." The result of that authentic focus and unwavering integrity is the type of innovation that isn't market-driven; Catalinbread creates its own market for products players love, whether overdrive, delay/reverb, fuzz/distortion, or tremolo/modulation pedals (many of which are available at Sweetwater). The Echorec is a great example of Catalinbread's exciting, inspiring innovation.

About best I've ever had

I've owned a lot of effects at least around 1000 or more from pedals to rack gear, vintage pedals and effects and tape echoes.I had my eye on Binson Echorecs over last 30 years.I was having a blast playing through one once, more I played, more smiles on my face the higher the price tag went.Wasnt $ good a couple of the functions didn't work.Always would find one broken for $ to $ and it just never worked out.A few years back I lost everything I owned ,had to sell what I didn't lose, really rough times.I really loved my 3 EP3's and my EP4 echoplex and got talked into the whole Strymon Elcapistan hype.It sounded great I thought better than EP3 then I heard the Catalinbread Belle Epoch and got one a couple years ago.I was skeptical of the Echorec, the Strymon Volante looks cooler, but honestly Strymon pedals suck tone are for people who hate fun with a beard and a manbun.I want another Echorec, maybe two or three. This thing is inspiring unlike anything Strymon makes and most delays. The best delays going at moment are the Echorec ,pick a Belle Epoch and the Boss DD3T and the Boss Space Echo

Looking for Gilmour

I've been using a tape delay pedal for my Pink Floyd tones. This gets a good bit closer.

Five Stars of Fun!

Like psychedelic rock? You will love the Catalinbread Echorec! Plug in and jam. Play with the pedal settings while you experiment. Try chords, plucking single notes, slides and harmonics. Just touch a guitar string for subtle swirls while power chords explode like thunder and echo off of a distant mountain side. The Catalinbread Echorec is an improved pedal version of a 1960s Binson Echorec echo machine. You will quickly recognize this effect from countless classic rock hits. Led Zeppelin used a Binson Echorec effect on the drums in "When the Levee Breaks." The Binson Echorec sound defined Pink Floyd. In their Live at Pompeii performance of "A Saucerful Of Secrets" you will see David Gilmour sitting on the ground using a slide on his Strat with one hand while playing with the settings of a Binson Echorec echo machine using the other. This pedal is so much fun, you will be experimenting in much the same way very quickly. The Catalinbread Echorec is capable of producing an unmistakable effect. This pedal is incredibly cool and endlessly fun. Five Stars for sure.

Totally Unique Delay Pedal

I have owned the Echorec pedal for over 2 years now....i have quite a few high end delay pedals in my studio, both digital and analog, and can honestly say this pedal is unique compared to all the others. The Binson delay effects with additional controls sound fantastic for mood music of any kind. Add the beautiful preamp tone and dynamic picking sensitivity. Put it together and you will understand the reason i say this pedal is unique. It is the perfect addition to bread and butter pedals like the Boss DD-500, Eventide Timefactor, Strymon Timeline....all pedals i own that are fantastic in their own ways, but unable to do what this pedal does. An additional bonus is the tone / character differences on the output signal that 9v, 12v, and 18v power has on the analog section of the device....so sweet...this pedal will never come off my pedal board.

The trip begins here

Simply stated the most fun and inspiring delay pedal I have ever tried. With that being said it is super quirky and weird in the best possible way, Not an average delay at all, with the multi tap presets it works like a delay and reverb at the same time on some settings. The adjustable wobble/chorus pot is great, more usable than any chorus I"ve had, similar to a memory man. This pedal is uniquely touch sensitive amongst delays that I have tried. If you are looking for a fun pedal to be creative with and jam new echo laced riffs I cant recommend this highly enough. If u want an average predictable delay than I"d look elsewhere. Sound quality is better than any other delay pedal I"ve owned including some that cost quite a bit more. Catalinbread seems to be making some amazing products right now. If you are thinking about buying this, do yourself a favor and get it, you wont regret it.
