Care to Die (The Inspector Jim Carruthers Thrillers) Kindle Edition

4.2 4.2 out of 5 stars 1,111 ratings

When an old man is murdered at a Scottish nature reserve, DI Jim Carruthers investigates a web of deadly secrets reaching decades into the past.

While struggling to help his grieving colleague, Sergeant Andrea Fletcher, Detective Inspector Jim Carruthers is thrown into another troubling murder case. The body of an old man was discovered stabbed to death in a nature reserve—a ball of cloth rammed into the back of his throat. The only suspect is a local fifteen-year-old known for antisocial behavior. But the teenager has an alibi.

When a second elderly man is murdered in the same fashion at the same locale, Carruthers suspects it’s the work of a serial killer. But when revelations about the first victim send Carruthers to Iceland to interview the man’s estranged son, the case becomes truly baffling.

The seemingly disconnected threads of investigation include the decades-old disappearance of a twelve-year-old boy, the brutal murder of a former journalist, and a bitter local dispute about a nature reserve. And when Carruthers and Fletcher put the pieces together, they will lead them straight into a killer’s path.

I have to start by saying this is the second in the series and I haven't read the first one, but I was in no way confused by the storyline at all. This is still a great standalone book. The characters are rich and developed to the point that I could actually see them in my mind. The story was full of mystery, as the plot went along leading the reader in all different directions to who the murderer could be. We get to know these people on a personal level really well too, which ads a lot to the story. The investigation of two elderly gentleman eventually leads the police to a decades old cover up that still has deadly consequences as someone somewhere wants to keep it from coming out in the open. There is definitely some sneaky stuff going on and our A-team just doesn't know who they can trust. It comes down to the very last action filled pages for us to get the complete answers.

Liked the first book, just started the second. Big inconsistency, is DI Carruther's brother dead in a childhood hit and run or did he just have a heart attack? I liked the characters in the first novel so giving this a chance and continuing to read but that's a pretty big shift in story line. I'd say maybe there's a third brother but he'd have to be a twin because the 2 year age difference....maybe I'm not supposed to have paid attention?

There are no words to describe the loathing I have for people who prey on innocent children. The motions of even finding the truth are do HARD because of intense psychological trauma.

This is the first book I have read by Tana Collins but it won't be the last.

Recently demoted DI Jim Carruthers heads up an investigation into the murder of an elderly man. Little is know about him, let alone what he was doing in the location of Braidwood. This area is a proposed redevelopment site and DC Andie Fletcher attends a public meeting to find out about it.

A second body is found which is again in the same area and a man of roughly the same age. What is their link if any?

Carruthers works well with DC Andie Fletcher with both of them having stress in their lives, they generally confide in each other. Carruthers and his family had a shock when his brother suffered a heart attack, despite leading a healthy life. Andie had lost the baby she was expecting and parted company with her partner

The team begin their lengthy enquiries looking into these victim#s lives. What they uncover is so shocking that they all have difficulty in understanding. Without ruining this for everyone they uncover dealings with senior staff, police officers and even Judges. Once the newspapers had tried to run a story on these atrocities, but the power of the people involved was able to stop it in its tracks.

I would highly recommend this well-written book. The pace is fast and the characters believable.

I chose to read this book and all opinions in this review are all my own and completely unbiased. My thanks to Bloodhound books for this opportunity.

What a brilliant first paragraph! A description to get you instantly into the heart of the matter. An old man’s body is found in woodlands near an historic building complex. The man is a loner and no-one knows much about him. Could the possible development of the site along with it’s history have something to do with his death? A book to keep you engaged from the start with strong characters that bring the scenarios to life. Tenacious detectives along with the sloths we find in all walks of life sort out the clues and keep us guessing to the end. Jim Carruthers and Andi Fletcher are an excellent team with a sense of humour along the way. A well written entertaining read.
I voluntarily chose to read this ARC and all opinions in this review are my own and completely unbiased.

I really enjoyed Tana's first book in this series, Robbing the Dead.
The storyline evolving with the main characters in this book was so well thought out, Fletcher is battling her own demons and finding work difficult for various reasons.
The setting and main storyline in this book was cracking in detail, depth and suspense. Which I absolutely loved. I found it an intricate, but easy read, that I couldn't put down. I was right there trying to solve the puzzle that was unfolding.
There was a great deal of thought that went into the plot, and it showed within the writing and the way the characters wove together, as well as a creepy edgy feel to it all.
This is Tartan Noir at it's criminal best, and I really feel that this book has set the pace for Tana and looking forward to see what is coming next!

5.0 out of 5 stars A great new page turner from Tana Collins.

This is a great second novel from Tana Collins. Her main characters, Carruthers and Fletcher, are starting to develop more depth as their back stories are expertly woven in to the main plot of the story. This book, like her first, moves at an excellent pace, mixing procedure with fine story telling. Her sense of place is detailed and her peripheral characters are all well observed. She has managed to come up with a thoroughly plausible and well executed plot that draws its roots from some of the more well known and harrowing big news stories that have swept across the UK in recent years. Despite a hectic home and work life I finished this book in well under a week; if I'd been on holiday I'd have got through it in a day - it's that much of a page turner.

If you're going on holiday this summer and thinking of what to read by the pool you could do far worse than pick up Tana's books.

When's number three coming out?

A topic of child abuse and the impact on young lives is carefully crafted into a tale of mystery, murder and complex investigations. Inspector Jim Carruthers and his DI Fletcher work to solve recent murders while trying to sort their own complicated lives. An interesting revelation of cover ups and crimes not punished

5.0 out of 5 stars Great read

I read the first in this series, Robbing the Dead, by accident and enjoyed it so much I immediately bought this and read straight on. That has to be a good recommendation. This book flows well, the setting is around 6months to a year after the first and although themes are developed from one book to the next I think it could be read happily as a stand alone.
Jim Carruthers and Andie Fletcher continue to develop as characters and their relationship both professional and as friends is well drawn.
This book covers the subject of historical child abuse, but not in too much detail... Other than that it has happened and that it alerts the reader to just how often it did and does happen.
The setting is once again the East Neuk of Fife and this is well drawn and described. The action is fairly fast and touches on the frustration of the police in being fairly sure what is happening/has happened but being unable to move forward.
There are twists and turns in the plot which keep you involved and openings to develop story lines and characters further in future books.
I recommend this book and look forward to the next.
