I initially ordered an R-7. Before it arrived KenRockwell.com posted reviews with very detailed photos from both the R-10 and R-7. Putting the same test photos from the two cameras side by side on a 4k monitor I could not tell the difference in photo quality between the two cameras. With the photo quality being the same I shipped the R-7 back unopened and ordered the R-10. The R-7 has some great features over the R-10, but I was willing to give up the extra features to have a built-in flash. I frequently use fill flash and find that it makes a tremendous improvement in many lighting situations. I did not want the extra weight and bulk of an external flash. If you are debating between the R-7 and R-10 the choice is simple: If you don’t mind the extra weight of the camera and external flash get the R-7. If you are going to carry the camera around all day long, the 26 oz R-10 with the 18-150 lens is hard to beat.
The photo quality is so good, I decided to test the R-10 against my Canon 5D Mk4. No surprise here – The 5D Mk4 won the shoot off. However, the test involved taking a ridiculously small section of each photo and expanding it to full size. Uncropped photos up to ISO 6400 were very hard to tell apart. At ISO 12,800 and above the R-10 still delivers great photos and allows cropping but does not compete with the full frame 5D Mk4. For photo slide shows on a 75” 4K television the resolution is fantastic, and it is still very difficult to tell which camera the photo came from. My 5D Mk4 is affectionately named “The Beast” because it is so large and heavy. With a 24-105 F4 L lens it weighs 59 oz. The R-10 with the 18-150 lens weighs 26 oz.
This is my first mirrorless camera and I love the extra menu options and displays available. Having a histogram and level in the viewfinder is a big plus. On 80% of shots, I like to lock the meter and focus on the same spot with a half press of the shutter button, then recompose. With all 5 of my other Canon cameras this can only be done in the evaluative metering mode. The R-10 has options to do this with any or all metering modes. One issue I had with the R-10 is that the autofocus square frequently remains off center after the previous shot locked onto an object. I found a solution. There are two auto focus on buttons on the R-10, one in the front, one in the back. I reprogrammed the back AF on button to recenter the autofocus square.
Overall, this is a suburb camera. At 26 oz it is a feather weight that is effortless to carry. A heavy camera is more likely to be left in the car or hotel room. Even if you are not a road warrior, this camera is a solid choice for all around photography.
