Calling the Shots (Out on the Ice Book 3) Kindle Edition

4.5 4.5 out of 5 stars 64 ratings

Two passionate hockey coaches face off in this rivals-to-lovers romance from Out on the Ice author Kelly Farmer

Retired superstar Regan Lane is known for being outspoken. She’s never been one to keep her opinions to herself. When she lands a head coaching job in the women’s pro league with the Boston Ice, her brash promise to win the championship in her first year shocks no one. Especially not Tierney McGovern, head coach of the rival New York Lady Libertys.

Single mom Tierney knows what it’s like to live in someone else’s shadow, and she won’t let Regan steal the spotlight. Besides, she knows exactly how Regan operates: when it comes to delivering on her promises, she falls pitifully short. At least she did when she ghosted Tierney after their long-ago amazing week together.

As their teams face each other game after game, it doesn’t take long for them to realize their hockey rivalry isn’t the only thing heating up. And that maybe the real victory is in taking big chances on the ice—and off.

Kelly Farmer (she/her) has been writing romance novels since junior high. While the stories have changed, one theme remains the same: everyone deserves to have a happy ending. She is the bestselling author of queer contemporary romances with snarky humor and lots of heart.

When not writing, she enjoys being outside in nature, quoting from eighties movies, listening to all kinds of music, and petting every dog she comes in contact with. All of these show up in her books. Kelly lives in the Chicago area, where she swears every winter is her last one there.

Calling the Shots by Kelly Farmer is the third in her stellar Out on the Ice f/f hockey series. It is a bit of a rivals, opposites, second-chance story.

Rival coaches Regan Lane and Tierney McGovern shared an incredible week ages ago. While they both clearly champion women’s hockey, they couldn’t be more different in their public approaches. And Tierney is fiercely protective of her daughter, which adds another layer of complication to their lives and their navigating being in the public eye.

Kelly Farmer’s writing is immediately immersive. There’s no “just taking a quick peek”—I urge you to do yourself a favor and just block off the day before picking this up because you won’t want to put it back down. I loved getting to know Regan and Tierney, and their teams and friends and families. And getting glimpses of members of the Boston Ice from prior books is just a lovely bonus.

Regan and Tierney’s relationship is both easy and challenging for them. They discover quickly that their mutual chemistry is as strong as ever, and yet their upbringings and pasts interfere. Ms Farmer lets readers see that love can sometimes include apologies and work as well as unsurpassed joy.

Calling the Shots is a fantastic romance, and I can’t wait for more from Ms Farmer.

I’m a huge fan of sports romances, particularly hockey romances and really enjoyed this one from a new to me author. This is the third installment in this series but I definitely enjoyed it as a stand-alone and plan to read the prior books in the series. This was a fun, quick read and very enjoyable.

Regan and Tierney are both head coaches for teams in the female hockey league with a prior past that has created tension. They are cordial and courteous to each other when necessary for press events but their polar opposite personalities clash. Tierney is reserved and all business where Regan is unapologetically loud and the center of attention. Their dynamic is fun to read from their rivalry to their budding relationship. I thought it definitely added to the story how much Tierney’s daughter was included. She’s definitely an important character in Tierney’s storyline and how that factors into the relationship between the two MC’s. The romance scenes in the book is fade to black but there is definitely enough slow burn tension between these two characters.

I normally read MM sports and some MF sports so it was a nice change to read from the female perspective. Important issues were brought up and discussed about inclusivity and equality for women that are often missing.

I received an early copy of this book from NetGalley and Carina Press and this is my honest and fair review.

It's the coaches turn to figure their s#*% out & find more than hockey to make their lives worth living for. & of course the Boston Ice/New York Liberty rivalry continues strong. Hopefully there's more books to come in this series. Definitely got me feeling the world of hockey & the game more with every story.

In this hockey romance, Regan and Tiernan are rival coaches. Regan is a former olympian and is known as one of the best in the hockey world. Tiernan is a single mom who has always lived in the shadow of her hockey star father. As the pair’s teams constantly playing each other the interactions of the two coaches turn into flirtation and then a full blown relationship.

This book is the third in the Out on the Ice series and the second one I have read but it can be read as a standalone. I think I liked the second one in the series slightly more, but still enjoyed reading this one. I really liked Regan but found Tiernan’s insecurities to be a bit exhausting. I did like the two together and found that they made each other better people. This book was fade-to-black but the chemistry was there so it didn’t feel like a fade-to-black romance.

As soon as I saw this cover and saw the book was about hockey, I was interested. When two women hockey coaches, Regan and Tierney, with a past, come face to face again sparks start to fly. Overall this was a good book and a cute romance. I’ve read many hockey romances and am always looking for new ones, I really enjoyed how this hockey romance was handled. The characters were fun and complex and I really liked how Regan was handled and how much she advocated for womens hockey.

Don’t get me wrong, I really did enjoy this book, but I really wish it would have been in the first person. I feel like it would have read so much better that way. I’m some ways I found the writing hard to get into, but looking past that, I did love the story. I think hockey romance fans looking for something a little different would enjoy this book, just like I did.

Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for the ARC of this book!

I greatly enjoyed this. Very few editing errors with a good story to follow. I'm curious about the earlier books in this series now.

That was a fun one. Two rival coaches who once had a 'thing' at hockey camp find themselves competing and flirting as adults. Interesting characters, good romance, some drama but not TOO much.

While it's book three of a series, it also works as a standalone.

A second chance romance between two less than perfect personalities working hard to overcome their past. Love the hockey environment and setting the characters on the coaching side of the house. Very little technical sports jargon or scenes to scare the non-sports reader away.
