These are my favorite headphones in this price range. As a live sound engineer, I've used Shure SRH440s and Sennheiser HD 280s extensively in the booth, and was looking for a good pair of headphones for both casual listening at work (primary) and mixing (secondary). The phase switch allows me to get extra bass for my electronic music by switching the two ears out of phase, and then clean it up for mixing by switching them in phase and canceling some of the extra lower frequencies. That plus the multiple cords that it ships with gives even more options - I use the coiled cord at work when I'm not far from my PC and one of the 2 straight cords with the 1/4" adapter for more mobility behind the sound board. Build quality is great and they look sweet.
The long part...
The Senns offer good ambient noise rejection, and don't hurt your ears as much over time since they are over-ear instead of on-ear, but they are uncomfortable for me when I'm wearing them around my neck; they're a little on the heavy side and they clamp my neck too much. For this reason I wouldn't purchase a set of my own for mixing, despite their good sound and overall quality.
The Shures were a close contender with the Heils. Good clean sound, lightweight and comfortable, and their overall reputability makes them hard to pass up.
I was swayed into trying Heil after hearing a couple interviews with Bob Heil on Mike Sessler's Church Tech Weekly podcast (not really active anymore). Heil was heavily advertised in the podcast but it still piqued my interest, especially hearing the passion he puts into designing equipment. Now after using these for several months at work and taking them on a roundtrip 14-hr flight, I can say I am extremely happy with my purchase!
While they have the same problem as the Shures do, being on-ear, they do start to get a little uncomfortable after 3 or 4 hours of wear, but it's actually gotten better the longer I've had them. Most of the time even if I do start to notice it, I can either just ignore it or take them off for a few minutes and reposition. They're really lightweight though and sometimes I forget that I'm even wearing them.
Sound quality is excellent, and heavy on the bass. This is actually exactly what I was looking for since I listen to a lot of electronic / drum and bass music at work, and it sounds AWESOME. I typically use the phase switch in the OUT position when listening to electronic or hip hop tunes to get that thumping bass, and for rock / classical / most everything else the PHASE [in] position sounds cleaner and reduces muddiness, while still sounding balanced. I use the coiled cord at work since I'm near my computer and it's nice to have a lot less cable hanging around.
Admittedly I've only used these a couple times for mixing since I've had them. They're similar to the Shures in form, so they don't offer as much isolation as the Senns do, but I typically hang my headphones around my neck anyway and just listen into one ear occasionally to check EQs/etc. If I need to block out sound I'm used to pressing them onto my ears like I do with the Shures. Some sound engineers would probably prefer one of the other two brands for slightly better high-end clarity, but I think they work just fine, especially if you use the PHASE position on the phase switch. They're comfortable around my neck and have good swivel on the ear cups if you just want to put one ear up real quick. I use the straight cord with the included 1/4" adapter in the booth so I can move around more easily without feeling tethered to the board. I kind of wish the adapter would thread on like the Sennheiser ones instead of just plug in, but that's a very minor complaint.
Overall, this was a fantastic purchase and the fact that they're made by a small company is a bonus in my mind. My ears are happy.
These were in my sweet spot for price. I appreciate the fact that Heil didn't create an artificially differentiated range of phones that they cost reduce or add unneeded frills to. This is their only headphone model.
The bass overwhelmed me at first. Wow, it really gets low down there! But the detailed highs really are there too. After hours of listening and getting used to them, I found the Heils provided an intimate listening experience far less fatiguing than the Koss or my everyday Panasonic earbuds.
I'm very satisfied with my purchase.
A variety of music was used to evaluate - Jazz Trios, Classical guitar, Pipe organ, Fusion Jazz and Rock. The first record I played was Charles Lloyd's Tone Poem (my first listen was on the Heils) - so relaxing.
I didn't think at first that the phase switch would be useful. A lot of records have drums and pianos with out of phase mics. Was just listening to Thunderclap Newman and found myself switching the phase on every track. Two mixes for the price of one.
