I wouldn't recommend this product. The first time, admittedly I did not read the instructions and filled it full like I did normal dishwasher detergent. This resulted in the dishwasher overflowings with suds, all over the hard wood floor. I read the instructions after this happened and used the directed amount (1TBS). This did not overflow the dishwasher onto the floor, but there are so many suds in the dishwasher after the cycle is clean. It also keeps throwing errors on the dishwasher because it will not allow it to pump/drain properly. Waste of money. Pretty bummed considering it had such great reviews.
In a load a few pieces of glassware clean and shiny while the great majority were cloudy and dull.
Ceramics rarely got completely clean. Before using, we read all the reviews, those that warned against buying it, those that said, throw in some baking soda with it, shake super vigorously, etc. We tried everything. Using this product we never got one full load that was as clean as with 7th Gen or any of the major nationally advertised brands any of us has used at some time in our past. This product is far and away simply the worst.
The machine is not the latest, but cleans perfectly well and consistently well with 7th Gen.
But, it really didn't clean well at all.
And, I got the same pesky residue everyone else on Amazon complains about. So, I put both bottles under the sink, and forgot about it.
I was forced to handwash my dishes all this time using mostly baking soda and hot water. What a pain. Baking soda raises ph, like common soaps and detergents. It's what makes them clean. But, by itself, it's not the answer. It's more of a mess than a help. I missed the dishwasher.
One day, after using more baking soda and hot water in the sink, it occurred to me it might work in the auto dishwasher if I mixed the two products.
So, after Googling the use of the baking soda, making sure it wouldn't hurt the dishwasher seals, pump, etc, I just put some of the Better Life Gel in another container, and replaced the space with baking soda. I mixed it well. I even threw a little extra soda in the bottom of the dishwasher.
I think I found my answer.
The dishes pans, knives and forks were all nice and clean. And, the stubborn smell of burnt popcorn in my large pan was even gone.
How much baking soda? I don't know. Quite a bit. I didn't measure it. But, baking soda is cheap. Try it and see if it works for you.
If you suspect your dishwasher is leaking due to an over-filled detergent situation, you can diagnose this by opening the door a little while after you hear the detergent door flip open. If the foam/bubbles/suds are covering the walls of the dishwasher and piled up really high, then you are using too much detergent.
Once I started filling the detergent cup about 1/4 or less I have not had any issues...and yes, the dishes are just as clean as before :)
