Play This Portable, Stellar-sounding Keyboard Anywhere!

Generations of keyboard players can remember being stuck inside to practice during gorgeous summer days. The prevailing thought was along the lines of: “Wouldn't it be a nice change to take my keyboard on adventures through the woods, to the beach, or into the park?” With the purchase of a Casio CT-S1 from Sweetwater, you can now play anywhere! This lightweight, portable keyboard includes strap pins so you can jam anywhere you see fit — just add a strap and batteries, and you’re all set. You’ll be able to explore a variety of sounds, too. Aside from its 61 full-size keys with touch response, the CT-S1 packs 61 sounds onboard, including a stellar stereo German grand piano. When inspiration strikes, the 1-button recorder will allow you to capture ideas on the fly. Finally, the CT-S1 features a class-compliant USB-MIDI port for MIDI playback via the free Chordana App.

61 stunning sounds onboard

There are a variety of sounds to explore within the Casio CT-S1. Chief among them is a stereo grand piano rendered in a stunningly realistic virtual concert hall. The other classic sounds include electric pianos, synths, organs, and much more. In every category, you’ll find lifelike instruments that will impress you. But that’s not all: you also get exacting controls over EQ, temperament, and delay. There’s even a function that lets you choose among virtual concert halls to perform in.

Play along with your favorite songs

While we can all agree that playing piano alone is fun, it’s a lot more exciting with backing tracks. That’s why Casio included a class-compliant micro USB port in the design. With it, you can connect to any PC, Mac, iOS, or Android device and use the free Chordana Play app to download MIDI files. Play them back through the CT-S1 and jam along! Plus, with the purchase of the optional WU-BT10 Bluetooth MIDI/audio adapter, you can turn your CT-S1 into a Bluetooth speaker.

Casio CT-S1 61-key Portable Keyboard Features:

  • Ultra-portable 61-key keyboard
  • Full-size, touch responsive keys feel great to play
  • 61 tones give you plenty of sounds to experiment with
  • 1-button recorder captures your ideas for later
  • Onboard speakers deliver a clear sound

Perfect for a beginner like me

I love the red, mainly because it's different. This thing sounds amazing and I love the feel and response of the keys. My father has been playing piano for 60 years and was blown away by how accurate it sounds. He said he's even thinking about getting one, even though he has keyboards that cost thousands of dollars. I'm very happy with this keyboard and definitely recommend it!

What else do you really need?

If you know what you want, this is a fantastic set of keys. I already have a big hammer action digital piano, and I was looking for a lightweight keyboard to bring to friends' homes and play some tunes. This instrument fit the bill perfectly! Does it have a thousand voices? No. Does it have a ton of weird features you don't need like a backup band for elevator music? No. What it has are a good number of really great sounding piano, vintage organ, keyboard and synth sounds, 61 good synth action keys and a funky design. If you want to just play keyboard alone or with others, what else do you need?

Great Value - My Kids Love It

I ordered this for my oldest son's 8th birthday. We have an acoustic piano, which all my kids love playing, but they also love playing with all of the sounds on the Casiotone. I am constantly impressed with the richness and clarity of tone that comes from this little keyboard. The volume is also impressive for a $ keyboard. The keybed feels pretty good both in the "semi-weighted" feel and the sensitivity. I did a lot of research on economic keyboards, and I don't regret landing on this one for my family of beginner musicians. I can see my son growing into this and even being able to use it with an amp one day (he's got a street performers personality). I also love that it can be used as MIDI controller, though we haven't tried that out yet.

Nothing bad to say about Sweetwater, nice sounding keyboard but wasn't for me.

I leave five stars on the review because everything was well put together but it just wasn't the best fit for me for the money. I have several keyboards and controllers at this point and this was somewhat of an impulse buy. Not returning it of course, but try it out in person at the Sweetwater store!

Amazing sound for so little

I bought this to use as a travel keyboard not expecting too much, but I'm seriously impressed with it. The sounds are very high grade, and the speakers project cleanly. I find myself playing it at about 50-60% volume while outside even with ambient noise.

I'm rather picky when it comes to keybeds and I find it very suitable. I would describe it as light, but not lifeless. I play a lot of jazz and this keybed has caused me no fatigue so far.

I'm partial to playing Rhodes and Wurlitzer sounds and have found both of these impressively represented on the CT-S1. I love the "advanced" organ tone as well.

I formerly owned a Yamaha NP-12, which I wanted as a travel piano. I never found myself satisfied with that keybed and eventually sold it. Comparing the two I would definitely recommend the Casio. The Casio doesn't feel like it's trying to fool you into thinking it's a weighted-key piano, and instead works to create a nuanced, responsive experience from a semi-weighted feel. It also far exceeds the sample quality and speaker quality of the NP-12.

The only negative I found is that the keys felt thin (as in thin plastic) on the white keys at first touch. As my first impression I assumed the playability would be a miss, but in fact I've found the keybed very satisfying despite the impression of it feeling like thinner than usual plastic. Bare in mind that my primary keyboard is a Yamaha Montage 6, which has great action but also feels like it's built to withstand a bomb blast. I'm speculating that Casio wanted to keep the weight down, and thankfully it didn't adversely affect the feel while playing.

Speaking of overall feel, this keyboard feels solidly built. I don't assume it would survive a beating that gigging instruments often experience, but in terms of fit and finish it feels more like a $400-500 instrument.

All in all I have no regrets.

Many of the keyboardists here at Sweetwater have fond memories of Casio that go all the way back to when we first started playing, and that's often kept us coming back for decades. Today, we're happy to point players to Casio keyboards, no matter how long they've been playing - even if they've never played at all. In fact, we've set up many beginners with Casio LK series Lighted-key models, and they've regularly raved about how easy these keyboards make learning. Likewise, several of the solo performers at Sweetwater swear by their fully loaded Privia and other advanced lines, which provide top-notch accompaniment and more. And if you stop by the Sweetwater Piano Showroom, we'll be happy to show you the latest Casio home piano - all providing amazing value and style.
