4.5 4.5 out of 5 stars 397 ratings

A wanted man. A heart in hiding. A love to free them both.

The Crest Stone Hotel is the perfect place for a man like Thomas Drexel to hide. Wanted for crimes he didn’t commit, Thomas hopes he can blend in as a handyman at the newly-opened hotel. But his past threatens his future when one of the hotel restaurant’s waitresses discovers his identity.

Caroline Beauchamp ran from Boston to escape an arranged marriage to a despicable man. She’s safe in the hotel, hidden from those who want her to return home. Yet she finds herself drawn to Thomas and compelled to help him prove his innocence, even if she risks her position as a Gilbert Girl to do so.

Experience has taught Thomas not to trust women who come from money, but it’s not long before he sees there’s more to Caroline than he thought. With new guests arriving at the hotel each day, it’s only a matter of time before the law finds Thomas and Caroline’s family finds her. With their futures on the line, Caroline and Thomas must trust their newfound love and face their pasts before they are pulled apart--forever.

Running From Forever is the second book in the new Gilbert Girls series. Like all of Cat's books, this sweet and clean historical romance will warm your heart and fill you with hope.

About the Author

Cat Cahill is author of the Gilbert Girls series. A sunset. Snow on the mountains. A roaring river in the spring. A man and a woman who can't fight the love that pulls them together. The danger and uncertainty of life in the Old West. This is what inspires her to write. She lives with her family, her hound dog, and a few cats in Kentucky. When she's not writing, she's losing herself in a good book, planning her next travel adventure, doing a puzzle, attempting to garden, or wrangling her kids.

Lu Banks is no stranger to using her voice-first as a classically trained singer, sometimes as an historical interpreter, and always as a soother of children-and is thrilled to have made the transition from voracious audiobook listener to passionate audiobook narrator. As a narrator, Lu marries her life experiences as a mother, museum director, social services provider, and writer with a passion for bringing words to life with a voice that has been described as soothing, warm, and eminently comforting. When she's not locked in her tiny padded booth, Lu can be found outside in the forest, working tirelessly for social justice causes, cooking things she can't pronounce, and nurturing neighborhood kids and pets.

Book #2, The Gilbert Girls, I enjoyed the first two books about building and opening a Crest Stone Hotel in Colorado in the 1800's. Young girls are hired to become waitresses in the Elegant Hotel, they need 24 girl to wait on tables when the train comes through twice a day. The girls become close friends and look after each other. This book follows Carolina's life. She ran away from home and became a Gilbert girl. It tells about her life at home and continues with her life at hotel. The way they are trained in the kitchen and the proper way to talk and to treat the customs with high reguards.

I enjoyed reading about the 1800's and these books have a twist of being western living on a ranch. These are novels that touch your heart and are believable with well defined characters. I recommend these books to everyone. They are good clean books that are fast paced and fun to read.

I've enjoyed reading the Gilbert Girls series so much. Adventure, romance, strong yet feminine heroines, masculine heroes with integrity & heart, these are only a few of the reasons. It's refreshing to read a historical fiction novel set in the American West which aligns with that era in both setting and dialog.
This particular book kept me interested because I had to know what Caroline was running from and how Thomas' dilemma would be solved.
This series is clean, sweet romance which would appeal to many romance readers, I think.

I enjoyed this book, it's a little different, not the usual plot with the main characters trying to find a reason not to love each other. There is some mystery mixed in with the romance.

I just couldn’t imagine how this one was going to all turn out but it was sure exciting seeing it all come together!! Caroline and Thomas’s story was romance at its best!!

I have read all of the 1st 4 books. Actually I read the 4th before realizing that I also had #1, 2,& 3. - then read these books in order. Even though they are standalone books, it is nice to read about their friends from previous books.
All 4 are very good - with a story all their own. While you also get to read some about others beginning with #1.
A group of young women who become waitresses at the new hotel, females who became very good friends - so they will also be a part of the other books yet the main story is about a particular woman.

Thomas Drexel and Caroline Beauchamp both arrive at The Crest Stone Hotel, hoping to hide from what has happened, or meant to happen. He gets a job as a carpenter, she becomes a Gilbert Girl. Their unexpected attraction, becomes an issue that can cost both of them their jobs, and maybe more. This is a well written book, with lots of twists and turns, which author Cat Cahill is becoming good at developing and solving! You will not want to put this down, until it ends. I recommend you read it for adventure and romance!

Thomas notices Caroline right away. But she needs her job as a Gilbert Girl and so can't get involved in any romantic relationship. But Thomas is running from his past and can't risk his job either--or can he? As feelings grow, Caroline matures into a strong young woman who stands up to responsibilities. But she has a few choices to make. Will they include Thomas? A delightful read with a few surprises!

Thomas is doing carpenter work rebuilding a hotel. He is wanted for robbing and killing a man.

Caroline has runaway from her home in Boston.
She works as a Gilbert Girl. They have high standards trying to tame the Wild West.

He thinks she is pretty an teases her, she has one thing on her mind becoming the head waitress. She isn’t interested in men.

Beautiful story portraying several lessons: 1. Wealth is not everything it's thought to be. 2. The simpler things of life can bring great joy. 3. Fighting for what is truly meaningful to us is worthwhile. Both Caroline and Thomas had run away from something. Relax and read this story that will give you a glimpse into their separate journeys and the risk they are willing to take. I appreciate the clean language in this story.
