What sets this model apart from it's bigger brothers is the knob adjuster which is fine by me. I've used the automatic ones before and they are too easy to move out of position. I'm the only person that uses my desk so once I get it set, that's it for adjustments except for moving the keyboard left and right occasionally, or adjusting the mouse tray which are both independent of the knob adjuster.. The keyboard position stays locked in. The adjustments were a bit rough out of the box, but some 3 in 1 oil fixed them right up.
I have a particle board desk - nothing fancy, just your run of the mill corner executive desk and the mounting hardware secured it to the desk and seems very sturdy to me. My previous keyboard tray was made of wood and was a bit heavier than this one.
The mouse glides effortlessly over the 3M mouse pad. It reminds me a lot of the wow pad. Usually mouse pads on keyboard trays leave a lot to be desired so this is just an added bonus. My Microsoft Ergonomic keyboard fits it just right without the gel pad that's included.
The keyboard tray fits together well, is easy to install and seems sturdy and adjustable to my liking. However, the mousepad only gets a 3 out of 5 rating.
The pad itself is a bit small and only has a top rail. The bottom pad is ok, but comes with 6 3M adhesive pads that have the round tab at the bottom so you can remove the pad without damage to the mousepad? (?). The surface of the pad is a sturdy coating that is like a rough textured plastic that is very slick and smooth. The problem with this pad is that there is only a top rail, no side guards. If you happen to slide your hand off the keyboard reaching for the (wireless) mouse and bump it to the side, it slides off the extremely slick pad and ends up falling on the ground. Likewise if you push or twist the board too fast, the (wireless) mouse goes skittering off the right edge of the mousepad.
This keyboard tray is very sturdy and has lots of adjustments. The separate mouse platform allows you to customize nicely.
Two things I would HIGHLY recommend is to ditch the wrist rests and adjust the keyboard tray to tilt slightly way from you (make the spacebar higher than the numbers). Here's why:
The rests actually cause more ergonomic problems for people. By holding your wrist in place, you are then making little twisting movements at your wrist to type keys or especially to move the mouse. Instead, practice moving your whole arm all the way up to your shoulder. Your larger muscles can take this kind of work much better than the tiny muscles in your hands and wrists.
Having the keyboard tilt away from you slightly allows a more natural position for your hands. If you look down at your hands on your keyboard you'll see how your wrists are bent upward. That's unhealthy. Some tilt allows your hands to drop to about the same level as your wrist.
Some years ago I had some repetitive strain injury and spent several months with a physical therapist. I learned so much from her including the couple of tips above. It's hard to create the habit to not rest our hands while mousing, but if you can do it, I promise your body will thank you!
The only possible complaint is that it does not swivel left and right so be sure you mount it exactly where you need it. Every thing else adjusts (mouse stand up, down, fore and aft) (keyboard stand up and down by 10 degrees up and 15 degrees down). Just what I was looking for and the price was good.
There is a lot of force contained in the arm-spring that raises and lowers the arm. It relies on pulling the the tip of the arm, which (is supposed to) disengage two plastic wedges (held in by bolts) to allow the spring to extend. Besides this being a poor design, essentially relying on friction to hold back this strong spring, the wedges are too loose to function. So I go to tighten the bolts, and one of the nuts is stripped. No quality control while putting these on. So with these wedges engaged, there is a minimum amount of force to keep this thing from explosively popping up (happened to me several times). If you get a finger in the mechanism when this lets loose, you will be in pain. Got my hand caught severalk times between arm and frame when it was popping up.
It is built sturdily, I'll give it that, but otherwise a piece of junk with poor design. Better if it had the wedges force toothed washers together for good retention.
