The Perfect Bass for Campfires and Acoustic Sets

There’s nothing quite like the playing experience and enriching low end of an awesome acoustic bass. For “unplugged” sets, bassists at Sweetwater recommend the Breedlove ECO Pursuit Exotic S Concerto CE Acoustic-electric Bass. It comes with high-quality appointments that make it a luxurious yet affordable instrument. Chief among these features is the solid myrtlewood top that delivers a satisfying, punchy fundamental. Sustainably sourced myrtlewood EcoTonewood back and sides provide the extra oomph needed to keep up with other acoustic instruments around a campfire. For occasions when you need more volume, you can plug into the bass’s onboard Fishman Presys I electronics. Like all other ECO Pursuit Exotic S instruments, the ECO Pursuit Exotic S Concerto CE features ethically and sustainably harvested tonewoods that make no lasting impact on the planet.

Myrtlewood body supplies premium tone

Myrtlewood has become a mainstay in the Breedlove lineup, and for very good reason. Native to the Pacific Northwest, myrtlewood showcases a blended sound with distinct tonal elements borrowed from mahogany, rosewood, and maple. With the right touch, you can use the solid myrtlewood top and myrtlewood EcoTonewood back and sides to pull out whatever tone you need at a moment’s notice. Myrtlewood is all the rage here at Sweetwater because each set of myrtlewood back and sides has a totally unique figure, making each myrtlewood guitar a one-of-a-kind instrument.

100% sustainably built

There are a lot of guitar builders who champion sustainability, but none comes close to matching Breedlove. The company’s dedication to complete environmental sustainability isn’t just a selling point; it’s a creed by which they do business. And now, Sweetwater is proud to announce that every Breedlove ECO Collection guitar is made with 100% ethically sourced, sustainably harvested tonewoods! That's right, from now on, every instrument bearing the Breedlove name will utilize ethically harvested and sustainable tonewoods.

Creating the next generation of acoustic basses

Building a sustainably sourced yet budget-friendly acoustic bass isn’t without its unique challenges. However, Breedlove has risen to the occasion in a way that few else could. In fact, the designers at Breedlove have changed the very fabric of the modern acoustic bass with their revolutionary EcoTonewood backs and sides. EcoTonewood isn’t some synthetic material to replace tonewoods; it’s exactly the opposite. It's a laminate material featuring two stunning outer tonewood plies with a center ply of African mahogany for added resonance that few other laminate basses can match. But why is this such a big deal? Sweetwater has the answer.

Most of today’s bass manufacturers use a 3-ply laminate or layer system for their more affordable models. The structure most often has two tonewood outer plies laminated over an inexpensive softwood core. While this construction method cuts costs and delivers a solid acoustic bass to the customer, a softwood core can stifle extra resonance and lessen the overall tonality. That’s where Breedlove’s EcoTonewood is different. By using African mahogany as the inner ply, the bass can live up to its true potential with a vibrant, full-bodied tone. Stop by Sweetwater’s showroom and play a Breedlove bass with EcoTonewood back and sides and experience the results for yourself.

Designing outstanding acoustic instruments at exceptional prices

A pursuit of flawless acoustic tone has encouraged Breedlove to push the limits of wallet-friendly design. Each Designed in Bend bass benefits from the research and experimentation conducted by the expert builders in Breedlove’s Oregon headquarters. This closely guarded collection of building techniques ensures that your bass performs up to its full potential.

Breedlove: guitars you can feel good about

From the company’s beginning in 1990, Breedlove has focused a lot of their efforts on offsetting their impact on the planet without compromising the quality of their instruments. Their radical approach to sustainability led Breedlove to create their Tonewood Certification Program and commit to visiting the locations where their timber is harvested to ensure that their sustainability standards are met. The company has introduced player-centered innovations, including top-loading bridges, fine-tuned voicings, and unique neck profiles. From the Discovery to the Legacy, each and every Breedlove is made with an uncompromising dedication to quality sound, flawless workmanship, and complete environmental sustainability. Buying a Breedlove is much more than purchasing a top-notch acoustic bass — it’s buying a bass that you can feel good about.

Pleasantly Surprised

Picked up this beautiful Bass about a month ago. After replacing the nickel wound strings with flat wound Fender strings I was amazed by not only the tone but also the loudness coming through. The tone from the myrtlewood is warm and full. In getting a balanced sound from each of the strings however, I did have to use the Mixer equalizer for the channel. I am in a Cowboy Band and we recent played a concert for the Arizona Ranger's annual meeting. Several amazing compliments on the sound including from my band mates were offered. The 34" neck felt like being at home on my favorite electric bass. The action was perfect and adjustment was not necessary. In a situation where bringing my upright is not practical or the venue is super tight this is a wonderful alternative while keeping with the acoustic feel of our Cowboy band. I am not crazy about the Fishman pickup due to the lack of eq-ing but can live with it for now.

Love this bass!

My bass collection lacked both a fretless and an acoustic, so hoping to kill two birds with one stone, I ordered this on a lark. I also have been intrigued by Breedlove for a while as a company. Couldn't be more pleased with this bass.

Great action. Fretboard is super comfortable. Tone is full and warm. I find myself playing this acoustically nearly every day now in the three months since I've had it.

The preamp is not perfect and feedback is a bit of a (not insurmountable)danger when it's plugged in. I have not gigged with it but I recommend highly for practice, recording, small groups, writing.

In short, a beautiful, fun bass at a fair price.

Beautiful Instrument

Waited about 9 months to receive this bass. I almost canceled order multiple times to buy cheaper bass that would come quick. Very glad I didn't because this was worth the wait. It has amazing tone and the instrument itself is beautiful. Tuner is accurate which is a plus. Couldn't be happier.

Nice Bass

I pre-ordered this bass way back in Oct and finally got it last month. The gloss finish was impressive and the build felt really solid with a good weight ratio and balance. The neck was slightly thick for my taste (all too common with acoustic basses) but over all a really nice build. I was particularly pleased with the lack of bridge pegs - a design i despise- in which this model solved by a small pocket through-hole design coming from the bottom edge of the bridge. the overall design asthetics are great, including the headstock and bronze tuners which look slightly aged and really went well with the overall design. the bindings around the bass and sound hole were also pretty impressive.

When the bass finally showed up i was disappointed with the myrtlewood grain on the one i received. It was as plain as could be with a much lighter wood and a bit of a tobacco burst sort of effect done with a darker stain. Not bad with the high gloss finish, but the only character in the grain was a small matching 1" knot on both sides of the face near the bridge, which reminded me more than i would like of my dog's "tail lights" on his rear end. In reality much lighter and completely unlike the pre order pictures.

Strike 2 was the fishman preamp. My primary reason for this purchase was my expectations of for the preamp, and the fishman presys 1 should not be put on a bass that costs over 200 bucks. it's bad. Highs get crusty on my fender rumble combo and really can't be tamed. There is no EQ whatsoever besides a "contour" button which helps a little but leaves a lot to be desired. If you are taking this out to play open mics, you are completely at the mercy of a sound guy who probably will have no clue what to do with an acoustic bass. In my experience Breedlove basses sound soft full and thick, but not this one once you plug it in. On the bright side, the each string was well enunciated and volume levels pretty smooth across the board.

The nail in the coffin went to the price point. Initially on pre-order and i felt that was a bit steep. Immediately after receiving mine they went on sale. I'm sure i could have worked something out with my sales guy but already feeling disappointed with the other short falls it seemed best to let it go. Sweetwater as usual was gracious with the return.
