Boss does a great job of giving drivers access to solid stereo features at a competitive price, and their BE950WCPA digital multimedia receiver is a prime example. With wireless Apple CarPlay and wireless Android Auto built in, you don't even need to think about plugging in your phone when you hop behind the wheel. You'll get the best iPhone and Android control available in the car on a 6.75" capacitive touchscreen, and if you use Siri or Google Assistant regularly, you'll find that this hands-free control translates perfectly to the car. Built-in Bluetooth® also makes wireless music streaming and hands-free calls easy.

Wired and wireless Apple CarPlay

CarPlay integrates your iPhone into the driving experience in a seamless interface, allowing you to access iPhone content with the sound of your voice. That means easy access to your music library, audiobooks, phone, messages, navigation, and many third-party streaming music apps, too. Learn more at www.apple.com/ios/carplay.

Wired and wireless Android Auto

If you're an Android user, this receiver is ready for your phone, too. Android Auto integrates your Android device into the driving experience without distracting you from the job at hand — driving. You'll have easy voice access to Google Maps, weather, music, and apps, not to mention your text messages. And you can make calls, too, of course. Get more info at www.android.com/auto.

Plus, Bluetooth

Bluetooth enables wireless streaming for stored music, Internet radio stations, podcasts, and audiobooks. This receiver also lets you take and make calls while keeping your hands on the wheel — an awesome safety feature when you're making your daily commute.

System-building tools

This Boss makes a supreme car command center, with a 6.75" touchscreen display that delivers system control, displays media info, and provides inputs for two cameras. The BE950WCPA's rear USB port lets you connect a smartphone, or you can access your digital music library loaded onto a flash drive. Plus, you'll get six ultra-clean preamp outputs for amplifiers powering your speakers and subs.

Bluetooth note: Use of this receiver's Bluetooth features will depend upon your phone's Bluetooth capabilities. Learn more in our article explaining Bluetooth profiles.

USB note: This receiver doesn't include a USB extension cable for the rear USB port. We recommend adding the PAC USBDMA6 extension cable or another cable that's compatible with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto to your order.

You'll need a wired connection to your parking brake to access settings and other features on this receiver. Your parking brake must be connected and set in order to view video on its screen.

Wireless Android Auto: The Boss Elite BE950WCPA receiver supports Android Auto with select Android smartphones using a wireless or wired connection. A Google or Samsung smartphone with Android OS 10.0+ or any smartphone with Android OS 11.0+ and 5GHz WiFi can utilize Android Auto Wireless with the Boss receiver using the latest version of the Android Auto app, plus a WiFi and Bluetooth connection. Android smartphones running Lollipop 5.0 or higher can also be hardwired to the Boss receiver via USB and Bluetooth. Android Auto extends the Android platform into your car in a way that's purpose-built for driving and automatically brings you useful information and organizes it into a simple on-screen user interface. It's designed to minimize distraction so you can stay focused on the road ahead. Features of Android Auto include -

    • Google Assistant: The Boss receiver enhances your Android Auto experience even more by incorporating Google Assistant using the head unit's external microphone and your car speakers for voice command and text-to-speech, which makes using Android Auto and all of its integrated applications fast, easy, and safe. You will need to press the "mic" button or say "OK Google" to activate the Google Assistant. Use the Google Assistant to make a call, send a message, reply to a message, get driving directions, or listen to music.
    • Google & Waze Maps: Use Google Maps to get where you're going with on-screen maps, voice-guided navigation, live traffic information, lane guidance, and more. Select your destination by using the head unit's touchscreen or just say where you want to go through the unit's external mic and Google Speech Technology. You can even listen to music from your Android Auto device or other connected source device while using Google Maps. If you prefer, you can switch over to a simpler version of the community-based Waze navigation app (version 4.27 or higher).
    • Phone & SMS: With Android Auto you get access to your contacts and messages through the Boss receiver while keeping your eyes on the road. Use the unit's external mic and Google Speech Technology to make a phone call, or have your text-messages read aloud to you while you concentrate on the road ahead; you can even reply to texts via voice command.
    • Music: Access your Android smartphone's music library through the Boss receiver via YouTube Music. You'll be able to browse music like you do on your smartphone with song/artist information display and album art. Use the receiver's touchscreen to select songs or just say what song you want to listen to through the head unit's external mic and Google Speech Technology. You also get access to online music and radio stations from Amazon Music, Tidal, Pandora, Spotify, iHeart Radio, Slacker Radio, & Tune-In. Music apps include song and station browsing, plus song/artist information and album art or station logo. Click here for a list of all compatible app for Android Auto.

    Notes:

    • The initial setup for Android Auto requires that your vehicle be stopped and the parking brake is engaged. You will need to connect the parking brake wire of the receiver's harness to your vehicle's parking brake circuit for the head unit to recognize that the vehicle's parking brake is engaged.
    • Bluetooth hands-free phone and wireless music streaming cannot be used while Android Auto is being used with a connected Android smartphone.

Wireless Apple CarPlay: Apple CarPlay is a smarter, safer way to use your iPhone 5 or newer in the car, while you stay focused on the road. Your iPhone can be connected to the Boss Elite BE950WCPA wirelessly via WiFi + Bluetooth or hardwired via USB. An iPhone 5 or newer (running iOS 9.0+) is required for a wireless connection, while an iPhone 5 or newer (running iOS 7.1+) is required for a hardwired connection. Apple CarPlay takes the things you want to do with your iPhone while driving and integrates them into the Boss Elite BE950WCPA. Apple CarPlay offers an incredibly intuitive way to make calls, view maps, listen to music, and access messages from your compatible iPhone through the Boss Elite BE950WCPA in-dash receiver. With Apple CarPlay, you can control these functions from the BE950WCPA receiver's 6.75" touchscreen or activate Siri for minimized distraction.

    • Maps: Through Apple CarPlay, the power and simplicity of Apple Maps comes to your dashboard; complete with turn-by-turn direction, traffic conditions, and estimated travel time. You can enter a new destination or choose a favorite or recent destination using the head unit's touchscreen or by simply asking Siri. CarPlay can also predict where you most likely want to go using addresses from your email, text messages, contacts, and calendars. If you have iOS 12.0 or newer on your iPhone with the latest version of Google Maps or Waze, you can choose to navigate via Google Maps or Waze instead of CarPlay. Google Maps and Waze do not support Siri voice control, but will have their own proprietary voice control function which has to be accessed through a touchscreen icon on the receiver.
    • Phone: With Apple CarPlay, you can use the BE950WCPA's interactive touchscreen or ask Siri to make calls, return calls, and check voicemail. To dial a phone number, simply tap the "Phone" icon and Siri will ask you who you want to call. Using the touchscreen you can manually enter a phone number from the on-screen keypad, scroll through contacts, or select from recent and miss calls. In addition, you get access to your voicemails via touchscreen and Siri. When a call comes in, simply tap the "Phone" icon to answer. You'll carry on your side of the conversation through the included external microphone, while the other party is heard through your vehicle's speakers.
    • Text Messages: Apple CarPlay also lets you enjoy a better and safer way of text messaging with friends and family when you're on the road, through the Boss receiver and Siri. Through your voice commands, Siri can send, read, and reply to your text messages so that you never have to glance at your phone while behind the wheel. When a new message comes in a banner will come across the screen and Siri will read back the message for you. Text messages cannot be read or typed from the head unit's touchscreen to prevent driver distraction.
    • Music Library: CarPlay lets you access your music in your iPhone's music library, plus Apple Music from the Boss Elite BE950WCPA. You can browse your music by Playlist, Artist, Song, etc.. just like you would on your iPhone from the BE950WCPA's touchscreen. You can also use Siri to find and play back your music. The BE950WCPA's touchscreen will display song/artist information, as well as album art in the background. Tap the Now Playing icon on the Boss receiver's capacitive touchscreen and see song, artist, album information with Album Art displaying in the background. From the Now Playing screen you also get basic playback function, like Play/Pause, Previous Next/Track, Fast Forward/Rewind, and Repeat/Shuffle.
    • Audio Apps & Podcasts: CarPlay also supports additional audio apps that you've downloaded to your iPhone for enjoying music, podcasts, sports, news, and audiobooks - including Pandora, Tidal, Spotify, iHeart Radio, TuneIn Radio, Slacker Radio, Vox, Stitcher, MLB.com At Bat, CBS Radio News, NPR One, OverCast, Audiobooks.com & Audible (subscriptions and fees may app). Control them from the head unit's touchscreen or Siri just like you would from your iPhone. Your iPhone's touchscreen remains unlocked during CarPlay connection, so you are able to access additional music apps and listen to them through the Boss receiver; however these apps offer no control or display information from the head unit's touchscreen.
    • Apple HomeKit Compatible: CarPlay now supports control of Apple HomeKit enabled devices (sold separately) through Siri. Using CarPlay in your vehicle, you can ask Siri to close or open your garage door, turn on or off home lighting, increase or decrease the temperature of your thermostat, as well as control select functions of other Apple HomeKit enabled devices and appliances. Click here for a list of compatible Apple HomeKit products.
    Notes:
    • Apple CarPlay is compatible with iPhone 5 or newer running iOS 7.1 or newer.
    • Bluetooth hands-free phone and wireless music streaming cannot be used while Apple CarPlay is being used with a connected iPhone.

GPS Antenna: The included GPS antenna must be installed for wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay to function. The GPS antenna can be mounted inside the front of vehicle on the dash or pillar.

USB Cable Note: The rear-panel USB port is attached to the rear-chassis via a 5" pigtail, so you'll need a long USB cable or Lightning-to-USB cable to make connection between the Boss radio and your Android smartphone or Apple iPhone. Use a cable that is under 6' long and avoid using any extension cable.

Cellular & Data Plan Requirements: Access to CarPlay and Android Auto apps will depend on the availability of a cellular and/or WiFi network for purposes of allowing your iPhone or Android smartphone to connect to the Internet. Your compatible Apple or Android device will need an active Data Plan account with connection to the Internet via 3G, EDGE, LTE (4G), or WiFi.

Smartphone Charging: The Boss Elite BE950WCPA will also charge (5V/2A) your Android Auto compatible Android smartphone or Apple CarPlay compatible iPhone while connected via USB with the vehicle's ignition switch set to the 'ACC' or 'On' position.

The harnesses for these radios are not the same. It would be necessary to rewire the new radio harness to the adapter harness for your vehicle.

These Boss BE950WCPA have a robust 5-year warranty when purchased through Crutchfield (3-years Canada), Jones. I see on your email that your Boss radio order was placed recently, so you are covered for a while! Parts could potentially be sourced directly from Boss, though support also may be limited. Please contact us first if you have any issues with your Boss radio, we are always here to help!

    Q
I currently have dual cameras from a wolfbox system. Can I use those to attach the my new Boss?
    peaches  Mar 28, 2023
    1 answer
    A
That is a good question, Tracy. The Wolfbox systems that I have researched on my end appear to be an all-in-one rearview mirror/camera combo. You would need to have a standard RCA video out on your setup to use with any replacement radio, and from my research it does not appear that the kits that I can see online have that capability sadly. You would most likely need to upgrade to cameras like the Boyo in the link below when changing the radio out. https://www.crutchfield.com/p_707VT601HD/Boyo-VTK601HD.html

I have an older C5 Corvette with stock Bose system. My understanding is there are some proprietary parts with the Bose set up in the car. I was wondering if the Bose head unit listed here would be able to plug and play with the stock system (will need wire adapter kit) or will I need to replace stock speakers and/or othe components?

Greetings Adam, and thank you for your question. Not all music apps are supported by Apple Carplay, or Android Auto. The Supports apps display well, and are controlled on the stereo screen. The non supported music apps can still play thru the radio, but control will, be done on your phone, and you may or may not have as much text information on the stereo display.

The Boss Elite BE950WCPA features dual camera inputs that consist of composite video jacks. There is a rear view camera input and a front view camera input. Instead of just having the option for a back up camera this radio will allow you to incorporate a front camera if you would like to be able to see what's ahead of you. The front camera can be turned on at any time through the camera settings.

You need to purchase additional switch box, which (theoretically) will retain functions of the steering wheel controls. I've ordered both, the custom Crutchfield harness (highly recommended!) and the switch box, and both came wired and ready to plug in. I set the switches as instructed (for 2015 Subaru Forester), but not all steering wheel control functions worked. After calling the Crutchfield Customer Support (exceptional service!) I've got MOST, but not all functions working after many trials resetting the box's switches. So, I lost some of the functions (Voice control and phone, which I use on the stereo screen now). Your case might be different. Wishing you the best!

As with all aftermarket units that are "compatible" with steering wheel controls, you will need an external interface module to make it work. Crutchfield can help you find the right module for your car.

How does CarPlay startup work? Here's what I want: turn on the car, and CarPlay starts. I don't want any warning screens or to have to touch a CarPlay icon to get it going. Once you have paired your phone it will connect after a minute or so after turning the car on. It will resume playing music or whatever you were doing when it was turned off. Fair warning, the Bluetooth CarPlay is subject to disconnect randomly. For that reason I keep mine plugged into the USB port, disconnects when navigating through congested areas are a pain.

The unit works fine for me.. but the sequence of events to lock signal with your iphone do take about 1 minute. First you have to have all your iphone setting correct per setup manual, if not no communications. Once that was set correctly, the system works. it does show a connecting to device screen, it takes between 15 to 30 seconds to lock into your iphone. Sometimes, it has to retry one more time but this all happens within one minute. So it has a couple of bumps at turn on but for the money, it was a good deal for me. I do not want to plug in cables.

Can you hook up a cd changer to this unit?
    hecuba  Aug 31, 2021
    1 answer
    A
No. It does not have any built-in capability to control a CD player. You probably need to look for antique used stereos to find one with that capability. I doubt that there are any on the market now (or within the last decade) that still do that. For reference, Pioneer did away with their IP bus interface for CD changers in 2010. So, it you can find one of their 2009 or older models, and find one of the old changers, then you might be able to cobble together a retro system from that time period. The one option that WOULD work with this system is that if you have space for an extra single-din device, and can find an old Pioneer XDV-P6, you could connect it as an AUX device on this or any modern stereo. I mention this model because it is controlled by its own front panel controls and remote control.

I have 3 of these radios and none of them do that. Actually when I put them in reverse it switches the camera on and also lowers the volume until I take it out of reverse. Assuming that your reverse signal is wired correctly there could be something wrong with the radio. I would contact Boss Audio and see if there is some setting that can be changed. I looked in settings and didn't see anything that looks like it would change it.

I would say, do some research on your current head unit and see what each wire is for before you do your purchase. I would need the information of year make and model of your vehicle and factory radio specifications to be able to accurately answer your question.

I used the wiring interface recommended for this radio and my 2011 Silverado, paid for the ReadyHarness service (worth it!), and all functionality from the old setup continues to work with the new system, including my factory installed mic.
    jeff  Jul 04, 2021
    A
Based on the install I had done, no. After market head units rarely are able to utilize factory installed mics. You may try to replace the factory installed mic with the after market head unit's mic. This may require addition hardware. However, you can place the new mic in various locations to utilize it. There is also a mic built into the head unit that should work also so you can go hands free with either option.

My Tahoe has OnStar built in so I have a factory mic but this radio uses an external mic that can be mounted near the driver. Mine is on top of the steering wheel. I just installed the Boss BE950WCPA in my vehicle & while this unit does feature wireless android auto, in my case its unusable. I have my phone mounted on the dash in one of those wireless induction chargers. It's maybe two feet away from the head-unit & yet looses bluetooth connection every few minutes. The onscreen message suggest moving the phone closer, which I will try but seriously, how much closer than two feet does it need to be? Super frustrated although I can't discount the possibility it's my aging Pixel 3 phone that's to blame. Regardless though, I'm betting wired is the way to go if you want a solid connection, especially as the unit's error handling is not very good, kicking you out to the main menu when it looses connection instead of simply retrying in the background. Unfortunately the USB port on my phone no longer works which is the main reason I purchased this radio as it supposedly supports wireless android auto.

In order for this functionality to work, the 'reverse input' wire on the stereo needs to be wired to something that receives power when the car goes into reverse.
    noah  Jun 17, 2021
    A
The radio has a purple wire coming off the back labled "Reverse Light (+)". This needs to be connected to the wire that powers the reverse lights of your vehicle to "trigger" the camera to turn on. You can call Crutchfield's help line to find out where that is under the dash. Or look at your account on their website - under your order there should be a link called "view your custom wiring instructions", It will have info about where the wire is and what color(s) it is. For my 2004 F250, there is a relay on the fuse box that has a black with pink stripe wire to connect it to, but every vehicle will be different.
    matt  Jun 15, 2021
    A
On this radio it has 2 wires for the rear camera. One is powered on all the time which is probably the one you are connected to. The other one if I remember right says rear camera signal or reverse signal. The signal wire will switch the radio to rear camera view when it receives a 12v signal. I just wired mine to the signal wire using the red wire on the video cable, so I don't have the ability to turn the camera on except when in reverse. My camera gets it's power from the reverse light wire in my tail light. I am not sure that it matters but your camera is probably powered on all the time.
    todd  Jun 13, 2021
    A
You have to find the right "reverse trigger" wire for your particular vehicle. It won't work without the reverse voltage. If you've don't that, check your settings.
    kraig  Jun 12, 2021

I would assume it is a wiring issues. This unit supports having the backup camera turn on when putting the car in reverse. (its working on my uint with my wifes minivan). The settings should have this enabled by default but there is the option to turn this off so it might be worth looking in the settings to ensure it is enabled.

To the best of my knowledge you have to use a new back-up camera and use the new mic on the stereo. I have a 2011 Chevrolet Silverado and the Back-up camera is in the rear view mirror though. This may be able to be used on newer models.

No, but this is a limitation of android auto, not of the stereo. I am not sure if this is possible with Apple Carplay though
