what is the smallest amount you can brew with this coffeemaker? Also can you use a permanent filter instead of paper filters?

I had my first Bonavita for 10 years. I just replaced it.  Brews the best coffee in 6 minutes.  The shower water drip is my assurance all the coffee grinds are used and I get the maximum flavor. Love it!

Best coffee maker ever!

Straight forward brewer. Ease of use. Love the thermos brewing pot as you can set it aside and pour later. Easy to clean.  Like any brewer of this type,  folks who live in regions with hard, mineral water will want to be sure to use a demineralizer product to keep the brewer functioning at full capacity. Very satisfied with our Bonavita

I have had this coffee machine for a week, it works very well and the coffee is very smooth compared to my other coffee pot (which is now a backup).  I have not had it long enough to see how it holds up to our hard water, so will see in a month or two how that goes.  If I knew that now and it does well, i would have given this a 5 star rating.

American Test Kitchen correct except on price!

Love it! Only 2 issues preventing me from giving 5 stars: 1. hinge in water tank cover was broken off when I got it 2. lip on inside of carafe retains a tiny amount of water when attempting to empty out (not a biggie, but annoying considering how much thought went into its design).

Unit is not fancy. Like the brew after first few. Like the prebrew functio . Do not like removing brew basket to place svrew on cover. Some complain re. Carafe heat retentio . No problem noted. Highly recommend at present regardless of pric .

Very basic coffee pot for the money. You need to screw the top on the carafe to pour water in the unit.  If top isn't screwed in, water goes all over the place. I wish the coffe was hotter.

Pros: it's super easy to use and the coffee is really good. It's a straightforward, easy, one-button process as opposed to the more complex, programmable units (that always seem to malfunction for me). I usually use reverse osmosis filtered water in this and haven't had an issue with residue but if you have medium-hard to hard water (if you get water spots on dishes, you're in this category) you'll want to stick with distilled or heavily filtered water and/or buy, and use regularly, a good descaling product to keep everything working as it should.
I've had this coffee maker for 4 years. It's had sporadic use; heavy at times and then periods where it wasn't used much at all, but the coffee maker itself has always made great coffee. 
Cons: the coffee pot leaves much to be desired. It's been enough of a hassle to me that, for all the considerable advantages of the coffee maker, if I'd known what a pain the carafe would be I might have just bought something else. 
The inside surface isn't as smooth as it should be - it's got a textured surface that picks up lint/threads/tiny bits of fabric if you try to hand dry it. So I dry it upside down in a dish strainer, but the plastic rim around the top prevents all the water from draining. So unless you air dry it overnight then carefully hand dry the leftover water around the rim with a towel (and even then I never seemed to get it all), that water ends up back in the pot as soon as you turn it upright. Drying that inner rim by hand wouldn't be such a big deal if the inside were smooth but the poor quality finish means when you go to dry it, you end up with fine threads/fabric hairs catching on the rough surface. 
I gave up on the carafe and now I use a large pyrex (glass) 32 oz measuring cup. It doesn't keep it hot, but it's so much easier to clean.
If not for the issues with the pot, this would be the perfect simple, no-fuss, one-step coffee maker that also manages to make great coffee. You don't have a million different settings to learn or a million programmable options that can malfunction.
As it is, I love it for its simplicity and great coffee. But if you really need your coffee to stay hot, you'll either need to deal with the downfalls of the carafe (which maybe won't be as big a deal to you as they are to me), or be prepared to stick around while it brews and immediately pour your coffee into an insulated container, or the easiest option: look elsewhere.

Great coffee, not so great carafe

Infusion feature does not work, light just continues to blink. Carafe does not keep coffee hot. Big disappointment for the price. Walmart won't return.

I don't know if Walmart sells this online only, or if it came from the manufacturer, but regardless, sending me a used and disgusting coffee maker that costs $180 (see pics) is irresponsible and extremely disappointing!  Not happy at all! Returning asap!

Awful!

The brewer makes great coffee with stable temperature control for brewing.

However, I STRONGLY recommend potential buyers to shop elsewhere, for a different product. Within a couple of years, the water reservoir developed 1 to 2-inch cracks on the carafe side of the tank. This is obviously a manufacture defect/design flaw. The manufacturer would not replace the brewer, as it was a few days past warranty.
I offered to install the replacement part myself, if they would ship to me; it was very obvious that this was not a user damaged product. They indicated there are no user serviceable parts. They offered to replace the brewer portion at "wholesale" cost, which coincidentally was just a few dollars less than the entire brewer on this site ($82.50), with carafe. I declined, and requested they replace the brewer at no cost, if they are unable to provide parts, but they refused.
If you have money to burn, and are willing to buy a $150 disposable coffee pot every year or two, this is a great brewer. If you're looking for a product you can depend on, look elsewhere.
I've gone from a fan-boy to an active proponent of avoiding this product in a few days, based upon their customer support. I encourage anyone considering the Bonavita products to be aware of their lack of customer support, and the short-term durability of the brewers. They are not worth the money they cost, if you have to replace them frequently. You could buy five brewers that would last 10 times longer for the same price. Think hard before purchasing this one. I have a hard-time believing the awards, based on the durability - the reviewers must have had a "new" unit.
