Body of Work Kindle Edition

4.6 4.6 out of 5 stars 24 ratings

A moving, lesbian romantic suspense about taking a chance on love after loss.

London-based abstract artist Noa Stevens has turned her back on the world after too much loss. First her brother disappeared in a storm years ago, then she lost her wife. Noa’s perfectly content to bury herself away rather than face the pain and risk that comes from embracing life. She’s certainly not looking forward to an enforced break in rural England that her worried agent’s sent her on in some misguided bid to break her out of her rut and inspire new art.

Busy district nurse Paige Clarke has a lot on her plate right now so a chance meeting with some hobbling, stubborn out-of-towner just adds to her workload. But for some reason the intriguing Londoner stays in her head, and the more she sees of her, the more Paige craves of her. It’s a shame Noa has such a resistance to new romance.

Noa’s torn between protecting her heart and trusting it, just as strange notes start appearing about her brother’s disappearance. As ghosts from her past surface, she wonders if now’s the time to risk it all?

Body of Work was about two women who endured tremendous lost in their lives. Noa, 41, was an abstract artist who struggled with life in general after her wife passed away from a heart defect. She also felt an incompleteness after her older brother disappeared when he was just thirteen years old. Paige was a district nurse who also suffered from lost when her girlfriend and two year old son were killed in an accident. After her girlfriend’s death, Paige also found out some heartbreaking news concerning the status of their relationship.

When Noa’s agent suggested she leave her home in London for a time and go to the countryside to concentrate on getting her life together, she grudgingly relented. Paige was Noa’s neighbor and came to her rescue when Noa hurt her ankle. Paige asserted herself in Noa’s life while trying to care for her injury even though Noa was standoffish and anti social at times. Eventually, they sought comfort with each other. But as their life began to turn toward a brighter future, the past pulled them back to deal with unresolved issues.

I liked how the author tackled the romance-mystery feel to this book. After the initial introduction to the mystery of Noa’s brother disappearance, it took a back seat to the relationship aspect of the story. There was spurts of the mystery throughout but it was mostly handled by Noa’s agent giving the women more time to develop their relationship. This was important for Paige and Noa to have that emotional connection especially when the latter chapters centered on the mystery part of the story and dangerous risks were taken. I think the author nicely developed their relationship in a short span of time so later on their concerns for each other’s well being felt real.

There were, however, a few scenes that I found difficult to believe based on the characters’ intelligence and personalities. One in particular had the women acting as hormonal teenagers in the middle of the residential street where they both lived. The others involved the mystery part of the storyline.
Other than that, this was a good read. If you enjoy romance-mystery, you’ll find this story entertaining.

District nurse Paige Clarke lived a quiet life, if that included tending to the needs of the people assigned to her when they required it. Everything you’d think of when it came to their health needs. She had been in a relationship that she’d thought was going just fine until her partner decided to leave her for another. Bad as that was, she’d also taken their son and unfortunately both died in a car accident. So she moved just to get away and make a new start for herself. After four years she felt like this little community was finally feeling like her home.
Noa Stevens lived a very different life, In some circles she’d be considered an accomplished artist, selling her paintings that enabled her to live. But was she really living? As a young girl she lost her older brother, her family didn’t have a clue if he was alive or dead, as her parents believed. But Noa thought he was still around and had hoped she’d either meet up with him again or find out just what happened to him. She was also luckly enough to have found the woman who she’d thought would be with her forever. But cancer had other plans.
Now alone with her pain, unable to go on with her painting her manager decided she needed to get away, hoping a stay in the country would get her back on track. He took a chance that not telling her about the letters, letters that had come asking her questions about her brother was the right thing to do. Who was it and what did they want?
This is the second book I’ve read by this author and while the first book I labeled as a very, very good read, with this one I’m labeling it a very good read. Nicely paced with some interesting twists and turns I’m sure you will enjoy too.

Featured artist Noah travels outside of London for an extended break. We learn that she is a widow. Her wife died a few years ago from a heart condition. Not long after her arrival to the remote Woodbridge area she meets nurse Paige who lives nearby. Paige is also no stranger to grief and loss. Paige’s nursing skill comes in handy and the two strike up a friendship of sorts. Eventually the friendship turns to romance. Past issues are woven into a mystery throughout the novel. Both characters are given some depth, their interactions are interesting. 3.5 stars

3.5 stars, would've been higher but for some <spoiler>transphobia</spoiler> at the end

This is a story about two women who have each known loss learning how to connect. Overall I liked it. I connected with each character. I felt their story was genuine, if a little insta-love. But I get it. I liked the setting, the art scene, the nature walks. Sure, Marcus was inconsistent, but oh well.

I was very disappointed though in the ending to the thriller. Making a <spoiler> crossdresser / trans person </spoiler> the "villain" was disappointing and unnecessary. I'm willing to hear other's perspectives on this...

Another excellent novel by Charlotte. She is fast becoming one of my favourite lesfic novelists. I love how she mixes romance with suspense & intrigue. I personally cannot wait for her next offering.
