Bone-Conductive is a Stretch
3 Stars
Bone-Conductive is a Stretch
As my first pair of "bone conductive" headphones, I have little to compare apples-to-apples with. That being said, I find that the description of "bone conductive" to be a stretch given my experiences with actual conductive audio devices for hearing tests. I wear hearing aids and have been given bone-conductive tests with actual bone-conductive devices designed to transmit electrical signals through the mastoid bone behind the ear. True bone conduction is meant to "bypass" the air-conductive pathways through the middle ear, getting signals directly to the nerve of the inner ear. Audiologists measure the air-bone gap to help determine whether their hearing loss is conductive or sensorineural.I purchased these primarily for use with my hearing aids, so I didn't have to remove my hearing aids to use a handsfree device with my phone. Holding a phone against hearing aids isn't particularly comfortable, and the microphone of the hearing aid is located behind the ear so the purpose of a hearing aid is often defeated when using a phone anyway. Secondarily, I wanted a pair of headphones that would allow me to hear the outside world while running or working, and I had observed many tradesmen with this type of headphone on job sites.I was rather surprised to hear a very audible "Power On" when I fired them up for the first time in my hand, knowing that they were intended to be bone conductive. I figured that maybe the speaker driver would produce a little bit of sound, but didn't expect it to be that audible. Prior to wearing them, I fired up some music to see if the "Power On" prompt was perhaps just an exception. As the music began to play, I could hear the headphones at an arm's length away. Okay, clearly they're pushing air a little more than I expected with a bone-conductive device.I first tried them while wearing my hearing aids. Putting them on, I noticed that if I wear them too far forward and actually on the temporal bone, there is very little sound that I can hear (it seems that it's not being conducted through the bone, but that I'm hearing it through air-conduction). Also, in testing the bone conductivity of them, I tried placing the drivers directly on the mastoid bone behind the ear. I heard nothing through the bone at all. When I place them on the flesh between the temporal bone and the tragus of the ear, I could hear the headphones the best. When removing my hearing aids, the sound of the headphones changed drastically. It was obvious that the hearing aids were amplifying the sound coming from the headphones. Were the headphones actually conducting primarily through bone, this should not be the case. The hearing aids are designed to amplify sounds coming through the air via a microphone and an audio processor. My hearing aids shouldn't be amplifying "bone-conducted" signals. If I hold the drivers directly over the ear canal without allowing them to rest on the flesh between the tragus and the temporal bone, they actually sound better than when they're resting on my head. Another indicator that they aren't really bone conductive. What I do like about them:They're pretty lightweight. They press against my head with enough tension to not jostle around when jumping up and down or shaking my head, but also not so much pressure as to cause a headache. From what I can tell, they appear to be fairly well sealed to be sweat resistant. I have used them for hands-free calling several times now and nobody on the other end has complained about their fidelity, and I can hear the other party well enough.TL;DR: In the end, I don't think it's fair to call these "bone conductive". They're more like "loud headphones" that are designed to sit near enough your ear canal so that you can hear the output. As such, people within a couple of feet will probably be able to hear what you're listening to, much in the way that you can hear what someone using cheap "on ear" headphones turned up too loud is listening to. So if you're using them on a bus, or train, or in a quiet room, you're going to get glances. As for running and still being able to hear my surroundings: yes, they'll work. But I lose a lot of fidelity when taking out my hearing aids, which shouldn't be the case with something truly bone conductive. My air-bone conductivity gap is nearly 0, so I should "hear" about the same from a air-conductive device and a bone-conductive device.

4.0 out of 5 stars I hear this - I hear that
Reviewed in the United States on January 18, 2021
Bone conduction headphones are such an interesting category of audio. Especially, for someone who has never adventure into it before. In some cases, they take a lot of getting used to, and in some cases, they don't take much getting used to at all. It all depends on how truly "bone conductive" they are (and models hit all over the place). In this case, this model doesn't take any getting used to. It's not going to hit you like models from Aftershokz and similar alternatives do (thankfully, they are also a fraction of the cost as well).

Instead, this model is more closely compared to the sunglasses with built-in audio that have been taking off recently among multiple manufacturers. It doesn't really use as much bone conduction as it does directional sound. It's kind of like wearing a typical pair of on-ear headphones (foam, not muffs), but brought away from your ears so you can listen to everything around you. You know, when someone starts talking to you as you are wearing them, so you slide them slightly off your ear a little so you can hear them but can still hear your music as well. Only difference is that the audio is still kind of pointing at your ear.

Only these keep a good fit and won't slide around or fall off your head as you move around. The fit is both tight yet also comfortable. The build quality seems pretty decent as well, therefore the water resistance they promise seems, promising.

So would we compare these to the bigger models/brands? No. We would say these are a pair of incredibly affordable headphones that are worn offset to your ears with directional sound so that you can still hear everything else around you. Audio quality is about what you'd expect from many of the "bone conductive" or "conductive-like" headphones. Most of them don't come anywhere near the quality of proper headphones. You lose a lot of low-end and the range will sound pretty basic to you. Most of them are like this. It's all about the sacrifice so that you can hear the environment around you openly and not having anything covering your ears. They are also more comfortable than your average pair of headphones.

Even though the audio quality isn't anything special, for the price, it's fine. You aren't buying these for audio quality. You are likely buying them for communication more than anything. Or background noise to listen to like the music in modern elevators or commercial lobbies. Just something to keep your brain entertained with while still being fully immersed. Now, if it cost as much as the bigger names do, we would be crouching about the quality (and we normally do for those models).
