Mavis Upton returns from her adventures in Whiskey Tango Foxtrot, and this time she’s taking no prisoners—which is never ideal for a police officer . . .

Well, this is Constable Mavis Upton . . . literally anything is possible . . .

About the Author

Gina was born in the late 1950s to a mum who frequently abandoned her in a pram outside Woolworths and a dad who after two pints of beer could play a mean Boogie Woogie on the piano in the front room of their 3-bed semi on the Wirral. Being the less adventurous of three children, she remains there to this day - apart from a long weekend in Bognor Regis in 1982.

Her teenage years were filled with angst, a CSE in Arithmetic, raging pimples and Barry White. Marriage and motherhood ensued, followed by divorce in her early thirties and a desperate need for a career and some form of financial support for herself and her young daughter. Trundling a three-wheeled trike along a leafy path one wintry day, memories of her favourite author Enid Blyton, ginger beer and solving mysteries along with her lifelong passion to be a police officer, excitedly gave way to an epiphany. And thus began an enjoyable and fulfilling career with Merseyside Police.

On reaching an age most women lie about, she quickly adapted to retirement by utilising her policing skills to chase after two granddaughters, two dogs and one previously used, but still in excellent condition, husband. Having said goodbye to what had been a huge part of her life, she suddenly had another epiphany. This time it was to put pen to paper to write a book based on her experiences as a police officer. Lying in bed one night staring at the ceiling, Gina's alter-ego Mavis Upton was born, ready to star in a humorous and sometimes poignant look at the life, loves and career of an everyday girl who followed a dream and embarked upon a search for the missing piece of her childhood.

4.0 out of 5 stars Mavis Upton's last stand

I came across Gina Kirkham's books by chance and I read her first book charting the life of the fictitious Mavis Upton in just a few days. The second book, was equally enjoyable. Gina has created a Bridget Jones meets Adrian Mole type of book with a touch of Charlie Owen's Horses Arse thrown in to the mix.

I now come to Gina's third and final book in the series that was published in 2019. Like the two previous stories, Blues, Twos & Baby Shoes takes place over a number of years as we enter PC Mavis Upton's final chapter of life in the police service.

Bizarrely, Gina Kirkham has decided to impregnate the central character in her late 40s at the same time as grown up daughter Ella's own pregnancy. It does lead to some quite amusing scenarios played out with good humour between the characters.

Unfortunately, I didn't quite find this book as enjoyable as the two previous stories. Much of 'Blue, Two's....' involves talk of middle aged female body changes, baby antics and other domestic scenarios, including a long lost Aunty. There was only limited police tales this time round which I did find disappointing. Not quite my cup of tea, but it is still a good read.

There was a sense of closure towards the end, as Mavis embarks on a new chapter in her life. I assume this will be the last story that will round off a good trilogy. I suspect Gina Kirkham wrote the three books as a 'project' when she retired herself, but I do hope we see her writing talents put to good use again in the future.

Loved this as much as others by the same author. If you want to laugh out loud and escape to a time of un pc police stories then this is a must. I often get told off when I cannot stop laughing over the escapades tears streaming down my face. Equally there are times of family sadness which will resonate with many. Can’t wait to read my next one.

5.0 out of 5 stars Laughter bellyaches and hoarseness.

What a blast from the past. Being able too relate to some of the changed named places and names makes it more enthralling. A very pleasurable and easy read.
It opens up your funny side even though death of a relative is a sad time. Gina uses her comical writing style and has you clutching at your belly when it aches. Your voice is hoarse with laughing and you don’t want to put it down.
A brilliant read and I can’t wait for the next book.
