Pack Your Rack with the Sound of ’73

Its design inspired by a legendary vintage British console mic preamp, the 1073, the Black Lion B173MK2 packs a massive punch, delivering the muscular lows, assertive mids, and glossy highs characteristic of a vintage 1073 in a budget-friendly half-rack unit. The B173MK2 features high-end parts and discrete Class A circuitry with Cinemag transformer-coupled input and output stages. With generous gain on tap, the B173MK2 serves up heaping portions of low-noise headroom. Now you’ll finally be able to use your low-output ribbon mics on quiet sources! The B173MK2 imparts a bold sonic assertiveness that beefs up any signal you pass through it. This is the sound that launched a thousand hits.

Big-iron upgrades and more

More than just another 1073 clone, the B173MK2 combines vintage-inspired sonics and modern features in a rugged half-rack chassis with a smart feature set that will satisfy the most demanding audio engineers. A revised gain stage and lower noise floor deliver cleaner sound with lower distortion, while Cinemag input and output transformers keep things warm, creamy, and beefy. A front-panel DI imparts harmonic richness to guitars, basses, and synths, while stepped input gain and variable output attenuation give you exacting control over transformer saturation. We dig the Black Lion B173MK2. It’s an amazing value and sounds great. Mount one or two of them in your rack and get to work.

Excellent hot-mod preamp value

Since 2006, Black Lion Audio has helped musicians and engineers improve the sound of their equipment, and they’ve built a solid reputation for coaxing world-class sound out of modestly priced gear. As an outfit that cut its teeth doing acclaimed mods, Black Lion, unsurprisingly, produces innovative audio equipment of their own design that consistently outperforms its price range. Sweetwater is proud to offer you their distinguished line of innovative products.

Fantastic on vocals

This little box really shines. I've ran several mics through it and all sound excellent. It's very easy to dial in, produces full bodied vocals with with a great sheen. Paired my Aston Spirit, there are times where no eq is necessary, just a little tape saturation and reverb and done. While I love my Apollo Unison preamps, the B173 is definitely a cut above.

This little baby rocks.

I have a pair of these, a pair of Autuers. Sparrow whites and 2 modded Avid 16x16's from this company. Black Lion Audio is the real deal. The sound on the B173 is open and clear yet colorful the more you crank it. It's a great marriage between modern clarity and vintage vibe. For the money, it can't be beat. Love direct bass and guitars through the di input. If you want some of the mojo of a commercial studio but you are on a home studio budget, add this to your Christmas list.

Finding The Sound

The Black Lion Audio microphone preamp is an excellent upgrade from the entry-level setup I was using for recording individual tracks. Pair it with a quality mic and you should be good to go. Thank you to Joshua Dillon at Sweetwater for the expert advice and rapid responses to my questions. Rock On!

Great preamp for any user looking for that sound

This was one of our studio's first outboard preamps. I knew I wanted to go with that 1073 sound. After listening to a bunch of shootouts I levitated towards this unit. It had what I was looking for but stood out, I presume it did so because it was not exactly a clone of the 1073 but rather an inspired circuit. So if you want a 1073 that has a bit more smoother and open top end, this thing is awesome. Pairing it with our SM7B then into our EVO 16 has been stellar on vocals.

My first preamp - not a letdown

The build quality of the unit is superb. It's pretty quiet (there is SOME noise.) The character it imparts on the vocals I record is subtle, but what comes out is definitely tastier than running straight into my Scarlett 2i2. I'm an amateur/hobbyist, and my detailed listening skills aren't on par with that of some others... but I know this box sounds good! It's the only piece of hardware gear I own and I feel like it's all I need at this point.
