The Biology of Belief 10th Anniversary Edition: Unleashing the Power of Consciousness, Matter & Miracles Paperback – October 11, 2016
Purchase options and add-ons
The Biology of Belief has been updated to bolster the book’s central premise with the latest scientific discoveries—and there have been a lot in the last decade.
The Biology of Belief is a groundbreaking work in the field of new biology. Former medical school professor and research scientist Bruce H. Lipton, Ph.D., presents his experiments, and those of other leading-edge scientists, which examine in great detail the mechanisms by which cells receive and process information.
The implications of this research radically change our understanding of life, showing that genes and DNA do not control our biology; instead, DNA is controlled by signals from outside the cell, including the energetic messages emanating from our positive and negative thoughts.
This profoundly hopeful synthesis of the latest and best research in cell biology and quantum physics has been hailed as a major breakthrough, showing that our bodies can be changed as we retrain our thinking.

Editorial Reviews
Review
— Deepak Chopra, M.D., F.A.C.P., co-author with Rudolph Tanzi of Super Genes: Unlock the Astonishing Power of Your DNA for Optimum Health and Well-Being
“Bruce Lipton’s book is the definitive summary of the new biology and all it implies. It is magnificent, profound beyond words, and a delight to read. It synthesizes an encyclopedia of critical new information into a brilliant yet simple package. These pages contain a genuine revolution in thought and understanding, one so radical that it can change the world.”
— Joseph Chilton Pearce, Ph.D., author of Magical Child and Evolution’s End
“Bruce Lipton’s delightfully written The Biology of Belief is a much-needed antidote to the ‘bottom-up’ materialism of today’s society. The idea that DNA encodes all of life’s development is being successfully employed in genetic engineering. At the same time, the shortfall of this approach is becoming evident. The Biology of Belief is a review of a quarter-century of pioneering results in Epigenetics, heralded by The Wall Street Science Journal in mid-2004 as an important new field. Its personal style makes it eminently readable and enjoyable.”
— Karl H. Pribram, M.D., Ph.D., (Hon. Multi), professor emeritus, Stanford University
“Dr. Lipton is a genius. His breakthrough discoveries give us tools for regaining the sovereignty over our lives. I recommend this book to anyone who is ready and willing to take full responsibility for themselves and the destiny of our planet.”
— LeVar Burton, actor and director
“Bruce Lipton offers new insights and understanding into the interface between biological organisms, the environment—and the influence of thought, perception, and subconscious awareness—on the expression of one’s body healing potential. Well-referenced explanations and examples make this book a refreshing ‘must read’ for the student of the biological, social, and health care sciences. Yet the clarity of the author’s presentation makes it an enjoyable read for a general audience.”
— Carl Cleveland III, D.C., President, Cleveland Chiropractic College
“Dr. Lipton’s revolutionary research has uncovered the missing connections between biology, psychology, and spirituality. If you want to understand the deepest mysteries of life, this is one of the most important books you will ever read.”
—Dennis Perman, D.C., co-founder, The Master’s Circle
“In this paradigm-busting book, Bruce Lipton delivers a TKO to Old Biology. With a left to Darwinian dogma and a right to allopathic medicine, he breaks out of the physicalist box into enlightenment on the mind/body (belief/biology) system. Must read, much fun.”
— Ralph Abraham, Ph.D., professor of mathematics, University of California; author of Chaos, Gaia, Eros
“Powerful! Elegant! Simple! In a style that is as accessible as it is meaningful, Dr. Bruce Lipton offers nothing less than the long-sought–after ‘missing link’ between life and consciousness. In doing so, he answers the oldest questions and solves the deepest mysteries of our past. I have no doubt that The Biology of Belief will become a cornerstone for the science of the new millennium.”
— Gregg Braden, best-selling author of The God Code and The Divine Matrix
“I finished reading this book with the same sense of profound respect I have when I am with Bruce Lipton—that I have been touched by a revolutionary sense of the truth. He is both a scientist and a philosopher; a scientist in that he provides us with tools toalter cultural consciousness and a philosopher because he challenges our beliefs about the very nature of our perceived reality. He is helping us create our own futures.”
— Guy F. Riekeman, D.C., President, Life University and College of Chiropractic
“The Biology of Belief is a milestone for evolving humanity. Dr. Bruce Lipton has provided, through his amazing research and in this inspiring book, a new, more awakened science of human growth and transformation. Instead of being limited by the genetic or biological constraints that humanity has been programmed to live by, humanity now has before it a way of unleashing its true spiritual potential with the help of simply transformed beliefs guided by ‘the gentle and loving hand of God.’ A definite must read for those dedicated to the mind/body movement and to the true essence of healing.”
— Dr. John F. Demartini, best-selling author of Count Your Blessings and The Breakthrough Experience
“In a world of chaos, Dr. Lipton brings clarity to mankind. His work is thought-provoking, insightful, and will hopefully lead people to ask better quality questions in their lives and to make better decisions. One of the most exciting books I have read, this is a must read.”
— Brian Kelly, D.C., President, New Zealand College of Chiropractic; President, Australian Spinal Research Foundation
“Finally, a compelling and easy-to-understand explanation of how your emotions regulate your genetic expression! You need to read this book to truly appreciate that you are not a victim of your genes but instead have unlimited capacity to live a life overflowing with peace, happiness, and love.”
— Joseph Mercola, D.O., Founder of mercola.com, the world’s most visited natural-health site
“This book is an absolute must-read if you want to know, from a scientific viewpoint, that your lifestyle is in control of your health rather than your genetics. From a scientific viewpoint, Lipton demonstrates that the mind is more powerful than drugs to regain our health. The information reveals that your health is more your responsibility than just being a victim of your genes. When I started reading this book, I could not stop until it was finished.”
— M. T. Morter, Jr., D.C., founder, Morter Health System; developer of the B.E.S.T. Technique
“This is a courageous and visionary book that provides solid evidence from quantum biology to dispel the myth of genetic determinism—and implicitly, victimhood. Dr. Bruce Lipton brings a solid scientific mind to not only inform but to transform and empower the reader with the realization that our beliefs create every aspect ofour personal reality. A provocative and inspiring read!”
— Lee Pulos, Ph.D., A.B.P.P., professor emeritus, University of British Columbia; author of Miracles and Other Realities and Beyond Hypnosis
“History will record The Biology of Belief as one of the most important writings of our time. Bruce Lipton has delivered the missing link between the understandings of biomedicine of the past and the essentials of energetic healing of the future. His complex insights are expressed in a readily understandable fashion with a style that welcomes the scientist and the nonscientist on an equal footing. For anyone interested in health, the well-being of the species, and the future of human life, The Biology of Belief is a must-read. The implications of the perspectives outlined have the potential to change the world as we know it. Bruce Lipton’s understandings—and his concise expression of them—are sheer genius.”
— Gerard W. Clum, D.C., President, Life Chiropractic College West

- Reviewed in the United States on December 20, 2024Original version super, but 10 yr Anniversary with All the updated discoveries is Wild! Living a busy single life, working, running a farm with 3 horses & property maintenance, plus other readings, hadn't been able to stay up with new developments. What a Great Read.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 23, 2024I was particularly careful in choosing the words for the title. Writing "it changed my life" might have been something people would have regarded as another review from a guy looking for a direction in life.
While we all may be looking for the right direction, one way or the other, there are books that deliver way beyond the expectations you developed after reading the first few pages.
After reading Dispenza's "Breaking the Habit of Being Yourself," which largely mentions this book, I felt almost an obligation to buy it. And when I started reading it I thought: "Oh geez, so slow, almost boring, things I have heard many times, here's another waste of time and money."
Oh my, was I wrong.
So totally wrong!
Bruce Lipton has the absolute capacity to really intrigue you while telling a story or explaining a concept that makes total sense, is scientifically accurate and more. The moment we read about his epiphany, it's like being there, with this still young professor, half a world away, struck by the light!
But you may be tricked by this review. You may read it like I am saying I like the way this man writes.
Which is also true, I do.
But the treasure of this book is what it says.
It is the ultimate message that focusing your attention on details is absolutely horrifying if it makes you lose the big picture.
Explaining we should stop blaming (and cursing) our genes for what we are. And don't even think about surrendering and give up to our laziness is the final message.
A message you get after reading this book.
Because you need to read it all.
Because nowhere in this book you will read "stop blaming your genes and look at the big picture." The book is a journey into the big picture. A journey made out of solid science.
A book that will teach you how clever our body is. And how stubborn and stupid it can be if we let it run on autopilot.
It is an invitation to tapping into this vast potential, learn how to redirect our attention and our ultimate direction. An invitation to throw away the navigator in your mobile phone and look for the destination using an old style map.
Why should we use a map in the gps area?
Because whenever you set the destination, the gps will choose for you!
It may be useful for a road trip.
But not for your life.
Read this book.
Read it again, and again if you like.
Dive into it.
Absorb it.
It may be the single and most important thing that will change your perception of the world.
And, what's most important, of yourself. And the life you want.
I will always be grateful to Bruce Lipton for this.
- Reviewed in the United States on February 18, 2025Thank you so much Dr. Bruce Lipton for writing such an easy to understand book about the influence of belief on cells!!! It was a fascinating read!
- Reviewed in the United States on September 17, 2020With already well over 2000 Amazon reviews, what’s to add? Only this: that you can control your own physiology, and that there is a legitimate basis to question the current materialistic basis of modern biology. (And don’t let the “new-age” cover art put you off – this is a book based on REAL SCIENCE, and not on mysticism.)
This book is biological revisionism – i.e., rethinking how cells react to their environment (which you can actually control) versus merely reacting to materialistic electro-chemical influences beyond your control.
Revisionism is always controversial – from Copernicus to Einstein. For me, research into revisionist concepts always proceeds from unanswered questions – be it history, biology, or whatever is being considered. In the current instance (biology) my fundamental unanswered question (mirrored by the author at page 38) is, “how can a mere 25,000 genes (in the human genome) code all of the 120,000 different types of cells in the human body?” Seems like you’d need a separate gene for each cell type – otherwise how could one gene know which type of cell it was to develop into from among the 6 (average) different possible variants? The author attempts to answer this question by providing for the effect of environmental conditions on the development of cells.
As for the book itself, it is an easy read (for a non-bio major) with easy to grasp metaphors. The only let-down was the pitch for “PSYCH-K” as the go-to method for accessing this new-found power of the mind. Perhaps the author is unable to tell us “how to do it” because no one yet knows – as stated by Dr. David S. Moore in “The Developing Genome – An Introduction to Behavioral Epigenetics” (2017) at pg. 189, “But today, we remain very far from being able to apply information about epigenetics in a practical way.”
Suggested supplemental reads to accompany this book include: (i) “Return to Life” (Jim Tucker – read this one first); and (ii) “Morphic Resonance” (Rupert Sheldrake – read this one last). By then you will have discovered the rabbit hole – i.e. “how could all of this biological development proceeded in the absence of some intangible “field”? (“Return to Life” opens the door to unexplainable things in general – puts you in a frame of mind to find these intangible, but influential, “fields” at least plausible.)
- Reviewed in the United States on December 10, 2024I absolutely love this book. The information is fascinating. I've got to buy another copy because it was borrowed and never returned. I'll gladly pay the price for another copy.

This book tells a fantastic story on how we are made up of little units that decided to live and work together in order to offer us a healthy body. It's incredible how well dr Lipton puts into perspective the view on our cells and how we can take control over our health and life.

5.0 out of 5 stars The biology of belief
Takeaways from reading the book:
How did we get from non-life to life on planet Earth?
- Page 9: Fossil evidence shows that single celled organisms were the first life forms on this planet 3.35 billion years ago.
- Page 9: 750 million years ago, the first multicellular organisms (plants and animals) appeared.
- Page 10: In larger organisms, only a small part of cells are concerned with reading and responding to environmental stimuli. That is the role of cells that form tissues and organs of the nervous system. These cells coordinate the behaviour of all other cells.
- Page 11: The French biologist Jean-Babtiste Lamarck was the first scientist to establish evolution as a scientific fact. He was the first to present the entire system of animals as a product of evolution. He presented his theory 50 years before Darwin.
What is DNA / RNA:
- Page 28: Cells are made of sugar, fat, protein and nucleic acids (DNA / RNA).
- Page 36: DNA molecules are long and thread-like. They are made from four nitrogen-containing chemicals called bases (adenine, thymine, cytosine and guanine).
- Page 36: Each DNA strand is normally intertwined with a second strand of DNA, a configuration known as the double helix. When the two strands of the DNA unwind, each single strand contains the information to make a complementary copy of itself.
- Page 37: RNA is the short-lived copy of the DNA.
Other research from the book:
- Page 13: Bacteria in our stomach and intestinal tract help digest food and also enable the absorption of life-sustaining vitamins.
- Page 14: Genes are physical memories of an organism's learned experiences.
- Page 27: The diseases diabetes, heart disease and cancer, which are burdens of today, are results of complex interactions between multiple genes and environmental factors.

5.0 out of 5 stars "Empowering Insights into the Mind-Body Connection: A Review of 'The Biology of Belief'"
The Biology of Belief" by Dr. Bruce Lipton is a groundbreaking exploration into the relationship between mind, body, and belief. Lipton challenges the conventional belief that our genes determine our biological destiny, proposing instead that our perceptions and beliefs are powerful influencers of our health and well-being. Drawing on his extensive research in cell biology, he presents a compelling argument for the role of consciousness in shaping our physiology and even our genetic expression.
What makes this book truly transformative is its empowering message that we have the ability to change our beliefs and, consequently, our lives. Lipton provides readers with practical tools and techniques to reprogram their subconscious mind and create positive change. His insights into the power of positive thinking, mindfulness, and the mind-body connection offer a refreshing and empowering perspective on health and healing.
"The Biology of Belief" is a must-read for anyone interested in understanding the profound impact of belief systems on our health, happiness, and overall quality of life. It is a revolutionary guide that empowers readers to take control of their own health and well-being through the transformative power of belief.
