Bianca Torre Is Afraid of Everything Kindle Edition

4.6 4.6 out of 5 stars 26 ratings

Murder most fowl? In this sardonic and campy YA thriller, an anxious, introverted nonbinary teen birder somehow finds themself investigating a murder with their neighbor/fellow anime lover, all while falling for a cute girl from their birding group...and trying not to get killed next.

Sixteen-year-old Bianca Torre is an avid birder undergoing a gender identity crisis and grappling with an ever-growing list of fears. Some, like Fear #6: Initiating Conversation, keep them constrained, forcing them to watch birds from the telescope in their bedroom. And, occasionally, their neighbors. When their gaze wanders to one particular window across the street, Bianca witnesses a creepy plague-masked murderer take their neighbor’s life. Worse, the death is ruled a suicide, forcing Bianca to make a choice—succumb to their long list of fears (including #3 Murder and #55 Breaking into a Dead Guy’s Apartment), or investigate what happened.

Bianca enlists the help of their friend Anderson Coleman, but the two have more knowledge of anime than true crime. As Bianca and Anderson dig deeper into the murder with a little help from Bianca’s crush and fellow birding aficionado, Elaine Yee (#13 Beautiful People, #11 Parents Discovering They’re a Raging Lesbian), the trio uncover a conspiracy much larger—and weirder—than imagined. And when the killer catches wind of the investigation, suddenly Bianca’s #1 fear of public speaking doesn’t sound so bad compared to the threat of being silenced for good.

In this absurdist, darkly comical YA thriller that is a deceptively deep exploration of anxiety and identity, perhaps the real murder investigation is the friends we make along the way.

Bianca Torre Is a Damn Delight. It has everything I look for in a reading experience; a suspenseful, gripping plot, an extremely lovable cast of [queer!] characters, empathy, growth, and so much fun. Bianca [and Pucella Winans] is FUNNY, and their humor allows the story to tackle topics like anxiety and coming out gracefully and compassionately. I related to Bianca so much; as a [deeply anxious] nonbinary person still figuring myself out, I felt comforted by the kindness characters extended to them as they share who they are with the world. I already know I'll be recommending this novel to so many people of all different ages. It's an escape, an adventure, a mystery, and a truly good time. Bound to be a cult classic (cheeky, I know).

My 14yo and I LOVED Bianca Torre is Afraid or Everything! The anxiety rep is spot on and totally relatable, but also funny! Bianca's journey to understanding themself is touching and authentic, and then there's a fun murder to solve! It's the perfect YA book and I can't wait to see what's next from Justine Pucella Winans.

3.5 stars rounded up.

okay so the thing that gets me about this is that emotional maturity and complexity wise, this feels like an early ya book. the characters are 17 but they feel 14. but there is a LOT of being hunted by killers for early ya.

i liked it though!

This is the definition of camp. A serial killer? A bird watching group? A dramatic climactic scene at a high school play? I want this to be a TV show so everyone can talk about it like they talked about Riverdale.

Bianca and their pals are a diverse and mostly queer Scooby gang working to bring justice on behalf of some innocent people who suffered under a corrupt, secret organization. But the joy of the book is in the characters, their individual stories and how they all come together as extended found family. I rooted for them all and laughed hard at their shenanigans. Then when Bianca speaks their truth first to themselves, then to the world, I admit, I did an ugly cry. If you decide to go for it, please listen to the audiobook, the narrator, Vico Ortiz, is a hoot. Five stars all the way.

"No time to question your gender identity like the middle of a murder investigation."
Laugh-out-loud funny and poignant YA murder mystery that starts off with Rear Window vibes only it is Bianca’s anxiety rather than a broken leg that has them spying on the neighbors. Then they witness a murder. Bianca gets involved when it is claimed to be a suicide. Love their partnership and growing friendship with co-detective Anderson. Would read a whole series starring those two. The way this book deals with gender identity in the story is breathtaking. We experience Bianca’s feelings and exploration in very personal ways while they are solving the murder. I teared up every time Bianca talked about their pronouns with someone important in their life. It is a brilliant line of storytelling. I definitely did not see the mystery resolution coming! Super interesting! Thank you so much to NetGalley, the publisher, and Justine for the chance to read early. Check author's list of content warnings!

No one told me how funny a book about a murder could be. I’m so glad Bianca could show me!!! There’s so much I loved about this book. First of all, once I started I couldn’t put it down. Perfectly paced and punctuated by puns, Bianca is bound to soar (pun absolutely intended). Featuring a cast of diverse queer characters, all of whom bring the skills needed to solve a most mysterious murder, and starring a non-binary anxious teen trying to figure out themselves and their romantic feelings all while trying to solve a murder, Bianca has everything! I found the MC Bianca to be particularly moving. They have themselves quite convinced that they are afraid of everything but they decide to not let it stop them from doing the right thing. They navigate normal teen drama (a crush! Friendships! Awkwardness!) and less normal (the murder of a neighbor) with humor and bravery.

Thanks NetGalley and Clarion Books for this eARC, these opinions are my own. What a hilarious twist on the mystery genre! Bianca was funny and relatable! I was hooked on the humor for the very first chapter! I also enjoyed the take on a character who has a lot of anxiety as well as struggles with their gender. I have struggled with anxiety for years and am still figuring out what being non-binary looks like for me so it was extremely nice to be able to connect to the character! It’s full of suspense and the plot will have you hooked, you’ll be unable to put it down! Can’t wait to read it again!
