First and foremost, the build quality is top-notch. It feels sturdy and durable, which gives me confidence that it will last for a long time. The padded shoulder straps and backrest make it comfortable to wear, even during extended use, which is a huge plus.
The 4-gallon capacity is perfect for covering a large area without constant refilling. It's also easy to fill and clean, thanks to the wide mouth opening. The adjustable spray nozzle allows me to customize the spray pattern to suit different tasks, from fine misting for delicate plants to a more concentrated stream for tougher weeds.
One of the standout features for me is the consistent and even spray distribution. It doesn't clog or sputter, ensuring that the application is uniform, which is essential for effective pest control and fertilization. The pressure control system is easy to use, and I appreciate the pressure relief valve for safety.
Overall, the Chapin 61500 Backpack Sprayer has made my gardening and landscaping tasks more efficient and enjoyable. It's a high-quality product that delivers on its promises, and I would highly recommend it to anyone in need of a reliable and effective sprayer. It's a fantastic investment for maintaining a beautiful and healthy outdoor space.
So far the only issues I see that I'm going to have with it are: 1) it's going to be very heavy with 4 gallons in it, and therefore difficult to get from the ground to my back - I imagine I will have to have it on some surface (table, counter, etc) in order to get it on; and 2) the base which the unit sits upright on is going to gouge in to my back, very uncomfortably so. I am 6 feet tall exactly, and rather lanky; the bottom of the base, which has a ridge around it, sits on the bottom of my lumbar back an inch or two above my hips, and digs right in to the skin/muscles there. So, I'm going to have to either A) put some padding on it, B) put some padding on my back (I'm thinking my ribbed elastic back brace will work well for this purpose, which I might want to wear anyway), or C) both A and B. If you are 5'9" or shorter, I imagine there would be no digging in to the back, as it would sit comfortably on your butt.
But given that using a 2-gallon hand-held sprayer caused my back to go out for 3 days every time I used it (and it took two fill ups to get my whole yard), I can only imagine that with this, I will actually be able to spray my entire yard and my back will be fine when I'm done. An unbelievable relief, as I have significant back problems (and a family that I like to spend time with, instead of laid up in bed). Once I use it, I will update this review and post some pictures.
But, there's a twist. If you search for Chapin 61500 on Amazon, it will direct you to the new version. The new version has the pump and the spray valve on the bottom. I suppose that's why recent reviews complain about leaks. However, as of 3/17/23, they are still offering the old design. That's the one to select; not the "New Design".
I do like the Chapin, but it's not without its faults. The unit has plastic grips for both the pump handle and the sprayer so they aren't flopping around when you're not using it. The sprayer grip holds it to the pump handle. Unfortunately, the grip holds onto the sprayer, but not the pump handle. I had to drill two small holes and ziptie the grip onto the pump handle; otherwise the grip would be sliding up and down the sprayer wand. The sprayer wouldn't shut off completely when I first used it. It would dribble out of the sprayer tip; a common problem with dirty valves. When I disassembled the valve, I found what appeared to be dried up lubricant around the valve stem. It must have been old stock A quick cleaning solved the problem.
The sprayer worked well. It didn't require much pumping as another reviewer reported. It discharged a generous stream, so you may be going through product faster than usual. Even with the lightly padded, thin shoulder straps, the unit was comfortable on my back; even when full. You may have trouble getting the device on your back because of the weight. I placed it on top of my recycle bin before strapping myself in.
Chapin had a good thing going with the old model; I wonder why they changed it. If you want a great leakless backpack sprayer, you better pick this old model up fast.
