Note that some third-party external pre-amps commonly used with the SM7B DO require phantom power to operate, however. At least 60dB of gain is recommended to get that iconic warm and balanced tone most commonly associated with the SM7B. | Corded Electric | Battery Powered |

Why This Is The BEST Mic I've Ever Owned

Product Description
The award-winning TLM 103 is the ideal large diaphragm microphone for all professional and semi-professional applications requiring the utmost in sound quality on a limited budget. Available in satin nickel and matte black. Delivery includes an SG 103 swivel mount and a wooden jeweler's box. A standard name in high-end recording studios around the world, Neumann mics deliver the professional touch that's needed to capture high-quality audio. The TLM 103 is fast becoming a standard for home recording and the music industry. The large-diaphragm Neumann TLM-103 Microphone provides platinum-quality sound on a bronze budget, using transformerless circuitry for ultralow self-noise and handling high sound pressure levels up to 138dB. The TLM-103's cardioid polar pattern optimizes attenuation of unwanted sound and suppresses feedback and comes with a rugged wire mesh grille that helps protect the capsule. This is the mic for everyone who, despite budget limitations, does not want to do without the uncompromising Neumann sound. Applications Due to the universal cardioid pattern, straightforward handling, extremely low self-noise level, and finally, the price, the TLM 103 is predestined for all demanding applications from home recording to professional broadcasting and commercial recording studios. Polar pattern The TLM 103 is equipped with a large diaphragm capsule with cardioid pattern. By focusing on this pattern - used in most recording situations - the attenuation of unwanted rear sound has been optimized. Off-axis sounds are rendered naturally while isolation is increased. This also leads to a high feedback suppression when the microphone is used in live situations or where loudspeaker playback is a factor. Acoustic features The TLM 103 is addressed from the front, marked with the red Neumann logo on the microphone body. The K 103 large diaphragm capsule is based on the K 87, well known from the U 67 / U 87 microphones. The capsule has a flat frequency response up to ...

A MODERN CLASSICThe TLM 103 is a cardioid microphone with a large diaphragm condenser capsule derived from the classic K67/87 capsule of the legendary Neumann U 87. However, the TLM 103 has a slightly more modern voicing with a wide presence boost for frequencies above 5 kHz. Its very direct yet refined sound is perfect for vocals, and solo instruments that pop out of the mix without effort. |
TECHNICAL EXCELLENCEIts high sensitivity of 23 mV/Pa, ensures ultra low noise even with budget preamps and audio interfaces or vintage tube equipment. At the same time, the TLM 103 can handle enormous sound pressure levels of up to 138 dB without the need for preattenuation. Its vast dynamic range of 131 dB makes the TLM 103 a very easy to use studio microphone as it will capture anything from a soft whisper to a thunderous bass drum without adding noise or distortion. |
EXTREMELY VERSATILEThe TLM 103 was primarily designed for project studios and broadcast use, but due to its outstanding performance was soon embraced by renowned studios as a more modern-sounding alternative to the U87 e.g. for speech, vocals, drums, guitar amps, and piano. The TLM 103 is also often used as a spot mic in classical recordings e.g. for cello and double bass. |

My PC is fine, but on two occasions it was not. After recording with this premium mic and exporting as a WAV file, I tried listening back through headphones. For a couple seconds there was that desired, pristine sound, but then the recording froze and my laptop started making a horrible noise that would not go away without me clicking either Shutdown or Restart.
I honestly believe that this happened because of the high quality, but anyway, there can hardly be any arguing against the sound of this mic.
I want to give it 4 stars just because something about it seems superfluous, like it doesn't need to be this good. =D In the end, I ask myself not whether the mic was worth the money, but whether my voice is worth the mic! The answer that comes back to me is that something several hundreds of dollars less would probably be good enough for me. Oh well. This is used by celebrities for a reason.
