An Exceptional Saxophone for the Developing Player

Whether you’re a complete beginner or just returning to the sax, the BetterSax Alto Saxophone is a perfect choice. This incredible horn was forged from a unique partnership between Jay Metcalf of BetterSax fame and Conn-Selmer, one of the world’s leading instrument manufacturers. Together, they created a highly affordable saxophone that not only looks stunning, but sounds spectacular! And now, Sweetwater is proud to offer this astounding instrument to players of all levels. The BetterSax alto has a lightweight construction that allows it to vibrate freely, making it easy for any beginner to pick up and start playing right away. Along with that ease-of-playability, the BetterSax takes design cues from pro-model saxes, like the bore taper, neck design, blue steel springs, and Pisoni metal resonator pads. The result is a sax that produces a rich, sophisticated sound that students, teachers, and professionals alike will all enjoy.

Full-fledged features for developing players

The BetterSax alto saxophone comes with all the standard features a developing player needs. It's built with a post-to-body construction, making it lighter in weight and reducing resistance — this is especially important for anyone developing their sound, as you’ll want a horn that’s comfortable to hold, free blowing, and easy to play. The BetterSax alto saxophone also comes with a premium case that’ll protect your valuable instrument and store all the accessories you need. And with the addition of the high F# key and an adjustable thumb rest, you’ll have an instrument that will carry you well throughout your musical journey.

Professional look and feel

One of the first things you'll notice about the BetterSax alto is its striking look. Players will observe the dark cognac lacquer, giving off a vintage look. You’ll also spot the underslung octave key on the neck, which is inspired by vintage King saxophones as well as Elite Series Yanagisawa horns. But looks aren’t everything, which is why the BetterSax includes pro-level features that satisfy even demanding players. The bore is modeled after a top-level pro saxophone, giving it a rich, focused sound with super-tight intonation. Of course, none of that matters if the keys feel mushy under your fingers. That's why this sax is equipped with blue steel springs and Pisoni metal resonator pads, which add to the pro-level feel.

Backed by Conn-Selmer

The BetterSax alto saxophone was born from the unique partnership between Jay Metcalf and Conn-Selmer. It even brandishes the Bundy name, which hearkens back to the Selmer Company’s early days of manufacturing. Every BetterSax alto saxophone is made under strict supervision from Conn-Selmer, then set up and playtested by certified technicians at their headquarters in Elkhart, Indiana. After that, our Sweetwater technicians take each sax through our 40-point inspection process, ensuring you have the best-playing saxophone possible.

Better Sax Alto Sax

I've been watching Jay Metcalf's videos for a few years now and when he started talking about the Better Sax Alto I was intrigued. I at that time had my Selmer Super Action 80 Series II Alto so I really was not thinking too much about the Better Sax at that time. I was very impressed on how it sounded. I had to sell my SA80II alto for part of my down payment on my new house. I really wanted a new sax instead of one someone had used for years. I was really wanting a professional sax but the cost is too high for me. I thought because I've heard on YouTube people playing the Better Sax I would like to try it out for myself to see if I liked it and the price doesn't break the bank. When I got it I was blown away on how great it sounds and ease of playing. I still can't believe that as good as this sax plays and sounds that it would be considered a student sax. I didn't use the mouthpiece that came with it so I can't speak on how the mouthpiece is but I've used my Theo Wanne Earth #6 and my Jody Jazz HR* Custom Dark #7 and man that sax sounds every bit as good as any professional I've played. When I get the money saved up I'm buying the Better Sax Tenor. Thank you Jay Metcalf, Conn/Selmer and Sweetwater. You guys are the best. Feel free to use my review anytime.

Great Value/Beautiful Instrument

I decided to purchase the BetterSax alto after watching videos showing the quality control process that it has gone through at Conn-Selmer and Sweetwater. I also watched the developer, Jay Metcalf, compare it to a Yamaha student sax. I investigated renting an instrument first, but decided the purchase of the BetterSax alto made better financial sense to me. It arrived quickly and is absolutely beautiful. I only played for a brief time over 35 years ago. After letting it warm up a bit, I put it together and was able to get a real nice sound out of it. Thank you Jay Metcalf and Sweetwater Music for providing a great instrument at an affordable price. I am confident I made the right decision in purchasing the BetterSax alto. The online resources at BetterSax.com are an added bonus.
Music background: Beginner flute, alto sax, guitar, bass, baritone ukulele, soprano ukulele, and UBass. Retired with time on my hands.

Nice! instrument

I bought this for my 13 yr old daughter . She was playing a selmer school sax in jazz band in school but she wanted to try this better sax after seeing the bettersaxyoutube guy talking about it . I was a little skeptical myself. But decided to give it a try anyways and I'm glad I did . First off . Right after I ordered it I received a email from Josh kitchen the sales engineer. I was impressed about that then he called . But I didn't answer because I didn't recognize the number. So he texted me to introduce himself to me and let me know he was there for me if I had any questions or concerns. Now that's some good service. Well we received the instrument rather quickly and it was packed really nicely and secure my daughter loves the case it came in and she loves how light the sax is . She really loves it she put the school sax down and never touched it again till she gave it back to the school. If that tells you anything. Me personally I'm not a musician but my daughter loves it and says it's really easy to play on . I don't think you can go wrong with this one .

Great value!

I have been playing my BetterSax alto saxophone for a few months now, and I love this instrument! It looks beautiful in person, and sounds great, too! I was playing a student Yamaha rental, which is a very good sax, and this saxophone sounds just as good or better! For someone returning to music after a long break like me, I highly recommend this saxophone as an affordable option. I think that I will be happy playing this beauty for years to come!
