The upgrade was painless. I was able to swap out the doorbell itself without making any other wiring changes, since the chime adapter is the same between the units. Just as with the AD110, I was able to easily add the device to my Amcrest Smart Home app and get up and running quickly. I was able to plug the new IP address into my Amcrest NVR and the recording started with only a small gap in time while I was replacing the doorbell.
When comparing the two, I find both the image quality and the viewing angle to be improved over the previous model. The video compression also seems to be improved as I see less motion artifacts. This model adds wide dynamic range (WDR) capability, which is nice, but I find that the image quality suffers too much for my taste. However, the point is to ensure you can make out a face in shadows, and I do think it helps there.
One new feature that I’m finding helpful is human detection. With the older model, I would get a motion alert, but I would have to view the snapshot or clip to see if it was someone in my yard or just a bird. Now I get the human detection alert, which lets me know if I should look at the clip or not. I am really hoping that Amcrest will continue with this trend and add more detection models like package detection. This was a feature our previous Nest Hello had that I do miss on our Amcrest cameras. But the Nest Hello did not support on-site recording via SD card or NVR, so it had to go.
When it comes to the Amcrest Smart Home app, I am mostly satisfied there. Notifications come quickly and are consistent. I do find the way to download snapshots and videos a bit clunky though. You first save the snapshot or clip to the “My Saved Files” section of the app. From there you can download them to your phone. There is also a bug that has been in the app for awhile now that is a bit annoying. When you first open the video for the doorbell, the button says it is HD, but what you are viewing is the SD quality. If you tap that button, it switches the button to SD, but you are still viewing the SD quality. If you tap the button a third time, it switches the button and video to HD quality. Aside from those small issues, the app is really good. No complaints from my wife who is not a nerd like me :)
Attached is a comparison in quality where I zoomed into some mailboxes across the street. You can really see the improved quality here. It isn’t night and day, but it could be the difference between making out a license plate number. I also included snapshots of the full view of the AD110 and AD410 for comparison.

After all the headache, I wish I could have my old dumb doorbell back.
Pros:
- High definition picture looks great with no motion.
- WiFi, and uses doorbell power - so no additional wiring!
- Works with the Dahua integration in Home Assistant, including human detection
- Human detection works pretty well!
Cons:
- Video feed gets pretty choppy if there is a lot of motion. (This is the only camera on my network - and I tried both 5G/2.4G).
- Night vision LEDS produce a very terrible lens glare if there are any objects nearby
- Must install a good 16V, 30VA transformer, or the chime won't work at all (ask me how I know)
- Must be allowed to 'call home' over the internet, otherwise you get a blinking ring LED, and eventually the device just quits working, needs reset.
- You must have an account and install an app to set up / configure the doorbell cam.
- You must install a 2nd app to remove the AMCREST water mark.
- If you want to do 2-way comms locally, you need a 3rd app.
- The device runs hot! I'm in Minnesota, facing north, away from the sun. The device is always warm to the touch. I suppose that's how it kept working all winter.
- The call button stopped working altogether after 8 months. What? My device is under a large awning so it didn't even get wet.
Overall, I WAS okay with the minor shortcomings. But now it doesn't even work as a doorbell. Customer service is in India, and I was told to factory reset the device. (to fix the call button?) I hope that they don't expect customers to do that whole hassle multiple times a year!
Honestly I expect they will still RMA the device and honor the 1 year warranty - but I'll still be left searching for something that will last, and be operational without cloud 'features'.
UPDATE:
So who knew - I had to manually search up a firmware update, when the app claims none available. That fixed the button (for now). To update you need yet another program, for Windows/Mac this time. Still Amcrest hasn't done anything helpful for me. Their customer service must be very very busy perhaps.
