Customers like the sturdiness of the workbench. They say it's very sturdy, stable, and easy to fold. The bench is heavy enough to be stable when open, but not so heavy that it can't be folded. The heavy gauge steel of which it is constructed, along with the high quality work table, makes it a solid, sturdy, and high quality product. Customers also like how it stands up on its own when folded up.
"...The top surface is bamboo, and seems solidly constructed, although the mounting of the moving portion could stand to be a bit more rigid than it is...." Read more

Customers are mixed about the performance of the workbench. Some mention that it works great for their projects, while others say that it doesn't fulfill the basic needs of what they purchased it to do. The crank no longer works and the chain has come off the sprocket.
"...bolts and nuts and adjusting them to proper tightness, it looks and functions nicely. Can't wait to have my first project done with it." Read more

"The product seems solid and will likely work ok. I haven't used it yet. There was some pain in setting it up...." Read more

Customers are dissatisfied with the fit of the workbench. They mention that the dogs do not fit in the holes that were made to fit them, the orange pegs do not work well, and the table top takes 2 bolts that did not fit where they should. The peg holes are too tight and must be sanded to hold the peg in place. Some of the holes for the stops are a bit tight, but that's better than being over-size. Overall, some customers are disappointed with the quality and fit of this workbech.
"...ORIGINAL POST: Either some incorrect parts (they don't fit the bench and don't look like the parts in the instructions)..." Read more
"...I found the holes partially occluded with waxy material that I cleaned out using alcohol, and then with a spray of lube onto the tips of the bolts..." Read more
"...My only gripe is the clamps that are provided, some fit right in with little down force, while others are impossible to remove once you've jammed em..." Read more
"...out uniformly, and I had to rectify that issue next, as the pegs didn't fit in literally half of the holes...." Read more
Customers are dissatisfied with the tightness of the workbench. They mention that the screws to the front jaws do not tighten, the clamping weakness limits its use, and the bolts would not screw into the unit. The worktop board into the clamped position feels cheap and fragile, and some of the fasteners just did not want to catch. The clamps that are provided do not do the vertical and horizontal clamping, and they need to add washers to the hardware provided. The wood top did not screw to position tightly with the hardware, and it is difficult to assemble the workbenches. The movable plastic clamping lugs are extremely tight in the top when new, and in fact almost immovably so.
"...The movable plastic clamping lugs are extremely tight in the top when new — in fact almost immovably so...." Read more
"...and gearing used to move the smaller worktop board into the clamping position feel cheap and fragile...." Read more
"...My only gripe is the clamps that are provided, some fit right in with little down force, while others are impossible to remove once you've jammed em..." Read more

Some buyers have commented that they're not confident about the torque capacity of the plastic perforated belt that joins the two side clamping knobs to the center crank. But the whole point of that belt is that the belt isn't supposed to transmit a lot of torque. That's not its job. It's SUPPOSED to slip under load. You use the center crank to wind the moving table in and out quickly until it makes contact with the work, then you use the two side knobs directly on the two clamping screws to clamp it up tight. The belt slips under load so that if you need to tighten the two sides unevenly, you can. It's a simple and clever self-adjusting design.
Keep in mind what it is, and what it is not. It is not a bench vise. Don't try to make it do the job of a bench vise. If you do, you'll probably break it. (You probably don't want to try to mount a serious bench vise on it, either.) What it is, is a portable work surface with a huge variety of options for clamping your work in place while you work on it, a workbench that you can take to the job when you can't conveniently bring the job to the workbench. Keep that in mind, and you'll get along just fine with it.
When you're done working, it will fold up and stand on its own in about a foot of space against a wall. It's light enough that you could even hang it up if you wanted to. It'll go into the trunk of your car, no problem. When you show up to volunteer on a community project, you can bring not just your own tools, but your own workbench as well. Or maybe you're just driving across town to install a new garage door opener for your dad. Either way, the WM1000 is up to the job.
I always do thorough Googling to check out what others think of a product before I make my purchases. I saw more than one review of Black & Decker Workmate products complain about the product being delivered in wrecked packaging with parts missing. I do remember a time many years ago when I ordered a Workmate from a B&D retail store (nearby mall) and it was delivered in such pitiful condition that the store gave me another one and let me keep the first one which I was able to salvage without too much trouble. So, with my own prior experience, and that of some current reviewers on sites such as this (Amazon), I hesitated to order another Workmate by mail. Thus, a couple of weeks ago, I purchased a small Workmate Saw Horse and Vise from Home Depot for pickup at my local Home Depot store. I was so pleased with this little beauty that I took the chance and ordered the largest (to my knowledge) Workmate made, the BDST-11000 Workmate Workbench (this review) from Amazon since Home Depot didn't carry it. Well, It arrived today.
It took me less time to "assemble" the 11000 than it did the smaller Saw Horse and Vise---no more than twenty minutes. That's because the hardest part is getting it out of the box (which, by the way, was delivered by UPS in pristine condition!). There are only six bolts to attach---four to secure the larger bamboo work surface and two for the smaller one. Everything else is already assembled. The six bolts thread into "nuts" that are already integral to the main assembly.
I read some reviews that were critical of the quick adjust feature (the crank in the center of the front plate) that moves the (smaller) work surface . I disagree and think it's a brilliant idea executed equally brilliantly. This feature is for gross adjustments to close large empty distances between the clamping surfaces of the Workmate and the work piece. Once one gets these in proper position for clamping, one simply switches to the two side knobs to firmly tighten down on the work piece. A great feature!
This product is quality all the way. The heavy gauge steel of which it is constructed combined with the intelligent structural design of the folding mechanism make for a workbench that is rock steady in use. It is REALLY rock steady! I'm already contemplating purchasing a second one for our lake property. Along with its outstanding stability in use, it features massive latches that securely lock it in both the closed and open positions. The latches are released by pulling out on a large orange knob on one side of the workbench and they automatically engage when the bench is fully unfolded for use, and folded for storage, with a distinctive, and very reassuring, click. The smaller Workmate product that I bought a couple of weeks ago has no such locking feature. This is probably because a locking feature on that unit is not as desirable as it is on the large 11000.
As a last comment: When folded up for storage, the 11000 is free-standing and can be placed anywhere out of the way without further ado. Of course, it can also be hung on wall hooks, if desired. You could even slide it under your bed if you're a college student living in a dorm or small apartment. Wish I had had one back in '57 at Pratt.
Additional Comment: After assembling the Workmate 11000, I searched the product manual and carton for an indication of "country of origin" and came up empty. I was hoping to find a "Made in USA" stamp. However, I also did NOT find a "China" marking, either, and, would bet that this little number is produced stateside, or, in Europe where B&D has a major presence.
(Update 03/19/2018: the belt/tape thing slipped off one of its little cams or gears, so the center crank handle only moves one side of the table section. I haven't fixed it yet but I don't expect any difficulty. The cam/gear is visible and easy to access. I think the belt will slip back on easily. Other than that, no problems with the Workmate.)
I have a small shop, so the ability to fold the bench up and stand it against the wall is very useful. It's easy to fold and unfold once you get the hang of it. It's heavy and very sturdy - the main reason I bought it. I've hammered and chiseled on it with no problems. It has rubber feet so it doesn't slide easily. Overall, seems like a good product. Recommended if you're looking for a heavy-duty, foldable, portable work table.
