Then this NR1403 hit Amazon on sale at $299 and I thought "This is the one."
In the course of heavily reviewing CD players last year (2014) I settled upon the fairly pricy Marantz CD6005. I wanted an excellent player (I still listen to most of my music via CD) and one that I would use and keep for many, many years, and the Marantz pressed all the right buttons. But in some ways it only made it possible to hear the flaws of my Denon (listening directly via the headphone jack on the CD6005 was not good for the Denon). While the Denon has served me well, its overall sound quality was thin, especially in bass and mid-range.
Having really spent time reviewing Marantz products I had come to the conclusion I may look at them for replacing the Denon and when the NR1403 hit $100 off I bought it.
So... am I happy camper? Yes; very much. Set up was quick and easy. Even being a slimline product all the ports and such on the back were easy to access; not cramped at all. It has more than enough HDMI inputs, has a separate input for CD (my Denon did not - had to use Aux, which isn't a big deal, but seemed very weird considering it came out when CD players were still common enough) and a very handy subwoofer out (not all Marantz receivers do.. pity). The Audyssey works perfectly, but I can't help but feel it's a little too heavy-handed for my tastes. Fortunately there are Direct and Pure Direct modes which bypass the Audyssey EQ and give a straight signal path from input to speakers.
Comparing the NR1403 to my Denon... the Marantz is a beast. Very weighty, thus indicating a better power section. The sound quality hits the right marks as well: fuller and tighter bass, more present mid-range (present, but not forward) and more articulate highs. But it should sound better as at regular price it is about double what I paid for the Denon.
Bottom line... if you do not have high-power output needs and want or need a smaller form factor for an A/V receiver I cannot recommend too highly this Marantz. It is every bit as good as the CD6005 and I'm happy to now be firmly in the Marantz family.
At 4 inches it fits nice and still can get air flow.
It works pretty straight foward and the mic setup worked great in my room. I used five listening positions and sounds great in all of them.
I must say it was a bit confusing with the Audio Return Channel and the Standby Pass through features.
Standby pass through in this unit is too complicated you can either
1.pick the last input you used
2.specific input all the time
So if you want to just watch TV/play a game w/o surround sound and the receiver is set to a different input you have to
1.turn on the receiver
2.then select the input
3.then you can turn off the receiver.
If you don't do this no image will come on.
Adversely
If Passthrough is set to specific input then that's all it will passthrough and you have to turn the receiver on for all other inputs.
I'm not sure if this the case with all newer receivers but it's annoying.
I did have some small issues with Audio Return and Samsung Anynet+ but thanks to AVSforum was able to sort it out.
Other than that, the system is a breeze to setup speaker wise and sounds great.

The sound seems as good as my old Sony (which had great reviews). It may even be better, but that may be because I am not used to hearing cable in surround sound. I have to listen longer and try more blue rays, but the Marantz seems crisper, the Sony may have more depth, but that is small sample size. I also like the look, it is definitely sleeker than others, kind of modern I guess. I have it set up to automatically adjust the sound depending on the source, it seems to work. I suppose you don't know what you are missing, but it seems really good.
Two sort of negatives...the model is a couple years old, so know you aren't getting things like wifi built in. For me that was fine because the price is reduced, but you should keep it in mind. Also, I use some Monster speaker connectors that connect both the white and red wires. The Marantz has these separated too far to use the dual connectors for one speaker. I fixed this be attaching the positive and negative wires differently (two speakers fit sideways together, just make sure you don't cross connect). If you have separate connectors for each white and red, this will not be an issue.
I would buy this again!
Top reviews from other countries
i've been using it for about 2 months with Mirage Nanosats and a KenWood center and have been impressed with how natural the sound has been for TV and the occasional movie.
I think the self tuning works great. I'm not an audiophile but I could never get the sub level correct, always too much or two little and I found my self occasionally fiddling with it. Now I think the level has been great for the room it's in and it's all thanks to the Audyssey self tuning.
One thing I wasn't expecting to use was the ARC. But shortly after purchasing this receiver, I bought a TV that supports ARC. I haven't had to set up any kind of universal remote because the ARC works so well. The receiver turns on when the TV turns on and turns off when I turn the TV off. Even the inputs change appropriately. The only thing I have to do manually with the receiver remote is change to the chromecast input.
I'd definitely recommend this product if you're looking for a no frills, good looking receiver.
