I purchased two and have used only one of this new design. In use, the three strings seem perfectly adequate compared to four that the old ones used. But the old strings worked for a longer time than the three strings do. I guess that is not a surprise.
I cut the strings 11 - 12" long and fold them through the eyelets with about 1/4 - 1/2" difference in length. I make them 12" long and don't make the tips a different length as I do on 11" strings. My smallish four-cycle whip engine cannot swing much larger than that anyway. If I could work with 14", the speed that the whipping occurs is increased a lot, but it locks up in the taller grass too fast. And it is harder to maintain an even speed because of the load involved, but if the engine gets the whip head up to speed, the cutting is much easier with the longer strings.
I am very satisfied with these new replacement heads. I am not able to finish whip the entire grounds with one set of strings, but I carry a second set and quickly replace them once during the process. It gets counter-productive to use the strings once they wear down to about 2" which means only 7" out of 11" is actually worn off, but the whipping speed is so fast and the amount of cutting done is so small that replacement is indicated.
The new design of the eyelets is excellent improvement - the old ones worked ok, but these are better. The connection to the bar of the whip was only a small improvement, though a welcome one. I didn't think they could improve on it much - but they did. It was easier to install than the old one as a result.
I still have trouble with it in tall grass. I have to get up wind so that the whip takes off the bottom of the stems and subsequent revolutions throws the grass to one side out of the uncut grass into an already trimmed area. If the grass does not get thrown out, it tangles around the end until it stops the rotation, which it is all too ready to do. If that does not work, the only way is to take the tops off then the middle and then the bottom until all is cut off in the area before moving on to the next area to be cut. Each area should be relatively small, reached without moving from one position to another while taking the grass down.
The package comes with good instructions and ample options for mounting. Be sure to read them and attach it right.
If you have a lot of rough areas a bump head may be easier, and if you are edging this may not be for you. But for general grass/weeds/and brush clearing it works great.
