Product Description
TotalBoat Gleam is a classic style marine spar varnish that not only withstands the rigors of life at sea, it also makes the ideal wood varnish and wood sealer for all of your outdoor wood furniture, bar tops, tiki bars, picnic tables, patio tables, Adirondack chairs, antique wooden truck beds and more. This high-quality tung oil and phenolic resin formula contains UV inhibitors that provide lasting beauty, and a durable finish that expands and contracts with seasonal temperature changes to prevent chipping, cracking, and peeling. Use Gleam on interior and exterior wood for a tough, waterproof, marine polyurethane finish that won't fade. It's improved formula flows better, won’t leave brush marks, and has better overcoating & cure times, making it easy to get great results. Each coat provides medium build with excellent flow-out. You'll love how it flows off the brush and self-levels, leaving a smooth durable surface. Gleam gives all wood surfaces a radiant, transparent, warm amber hue in gloss or satin (matte) finish. For a high gloss varnish finish, apply 4-6 coats of Gleam Gloss. For a sleek satin finish, build with coats of the Gleam gloss varnish, and apply Gleam Satin for the final 1-2 coats. Whichever formula you choose, you’ll appreciate that Gleam’s improved formula allows you to scuff and apply additional coats quicker than ever because you can recoat in 1 hr. at 72 degrees F, and apply up to 3 coats in 1 day. Compare to gloss varnish, matte varnish, polyurethane wood finish, exterior polyurethane, matte polyurethane and polyurethane sealer products such as Epifanes Clear Varnish, Wood Finish Matte, Wood Finish Gloss, Pettit Flagship Varnish, Z Spar Captain's Varnish, Minwax Helmsman Spar Urethane, Rust-Oleum Marine Spar Varnish, System Three Clear Marine Spar Urethane Varnish Coating, and Old Masters Spar Marine Varnish. All TotalBoat products are developed for boaters by boaters, to provide great value and great results. 100% made in the USA.
From the manufacturer
TotalBoat Gleam Classic Marine Spar Varnish: A Faster, Easier Way to Get a Deep, Warm Amber Finish on Bare, Previously Varnished, or Epoxy Coated Wood.
These premium Gloss and Satin marine-grade varnish formulas are preferred for their ease of use, self-leveling properties, exceptional beauty, and maximum durability.
TotalBoat Gleam creates a finished look that's stunning in its beauty, gloriously highlighting the grain of all wood types. Its premium tung oil and phenolic resin formula is perfectly suited for clear coating applications. Gleam’s transparent amber Gloss and Satin finishes are easy to apply, with smooth flow out on bare wood, previously painted 1-part varnish in good condition, or over cured epoxy. Whether you choose Gloss or Satin, Gleam's fast-drying, easy-to-use formulas ensure a gorgeous amber finish with exceptional clarity and durability.
Tip: Achieving optimal results for gloss vs. satin applications.
- For Gloss applications, apply 4-6 coats of TotalBoat Gleam Gloss varnish to achieve desired finish & depth.
- For Satin applications, use build layers of Gleam Gloss, and directly prior to the final coat, sand lightly with 320-grit sandpaper & finish with 1 or 2 coats of Gleam Satin. Using Gleam Satin over built-up layers of Gleam Gloss showcases the natural wood grain more clearly than Satin alone.
Get a higher build per coat.
Compare Gleam to other varnishes - its higher build per coat plus faster overcoating and cure times save you time and effort without compromising finish quality.

Apply up to 3 coats in 1 day—without tedious sanding between coats.Improved Gleam varnish formulas have better overcoating & cure times so you can finish varnishing faster. In optimal conditions, you can recoat in as little as 1 hour @72°F, and you can apply up to 3 coats in 1 day—no need for sanding between coats. Gleam does not need to be sanded if overcoated within 48 hours. If 2-3 coats have been applied in one day, allow 48 hours drying time, then sand lightly with the grain, using 320-grit sandpaper, before overcoating or before applying the final coat. Tip: When you begin varnishing bare wood, you're not actually putting varnish onto the surface, but into it, because the wood will soak up the first couple of coats (called sealer coats). For an easier, faster way to apply sealer coats, use TotalBoat Wood Sealer varnish primer before applying Gleam. Wood Sealer is easy to apply, dries fast, and doesn't need sanding between coats. |
Gleam Gloss has exceptional depth and clarity.A total of 4-6 coats will give the best finish and depth. The more coats—the better the finish. Yearly maintenance tip: Clean Gleam surfaces with an all-purpose boat soap (such as TotalBoat Boat Soap) and water. To maintain the beautiful finish on exterior surfaces, apply 1-2 coats of Gleam annually. |
Gleam Satin highlights the wood grain and prevents sun damage. Most satin finish varnishes are used on interior surfaces only, such as cabins, trim, and floors because they don't protect against the sun's harmful rays. TotalBoat Gleam Satin varnish is different - it provides protection on exterior surfaces, too. So use our Gleam Satin outdoors on tillers, decks, coamings, hatches, outdoor furniture, and more. |

It all started simply enough. As boaters, we wanted better stuff for our own boats.
Even our favorite products, the ones we'd come to rely on, had room for improvement. It'd be nice if they could hold up longer, cure faster, coat better, apply easier, and—since we all know boat ownership creates a mini maelstrom in your pocket—cost less. So we took everything we knew from 35 years of customer feedback, combined that with our own boating knowledge, and after a few years of rigorous R&D, TotalBoat was born. Launched, rather. By boaters, for boaters.
Need help? The members of our TotalBoat Tech Team are boat owners who really know their stuff. So whether you're trying to figure out what to buy or what's the best solution for your particular project, they have years of hands-on training and experience—and a passion to help you succeed.
