Jane Austen Cannot Marry (Time and Tide Series Book 1) Kindle Edition

4.7 4.7 out of 5 stars 50 ratings

A comically offbeat, fish-out-of-water, time travel novel set in Regency England and the
21st century Colorado Rockies. Nadine Finley is a Scribe Guardian from the future who
must play ‘un-matchmaker’ to Jane Austen, a British naval officer, and the romance that
jeopardizes literary history.

Nadine has made the quantum commute to 1811 to stop Jane Austen from meeting and
marrying Captain Charles Gordon. The two of them share a romantic past, and if Nadine
fails in her mission, Jane will never get to London. The fledgling author will never get
her first book ready for publication. And if the novel is never readied for the presses,
Jane will never go back home and revise the manuscript that will eventually
become Pride and Prejudice. In short, disaster.

The mission instructions were plain and simple: Jane Austen cannot marry.

Except...matters become extremely complicated when the Scribe Guardian’s own
romantic interest unintentionally follows her across the centuries to 1811.
Xander Nouri is a tech millionaire who is cheerfully unfamiliar with both history and
literature. He has also forged a life where he is insulated from the non-quantifiable
uncertainties of feelings and romance. In fact, the only time he let his guard down was
for three wildly unexpected days in Las Vegas when he allowed his heart to be fondled
and then stomped on by an elusive woman named Nadine. Xander lives in a world of
reason, facts, and data…none of which explain her appearance, dressed in period
clothing, in a coffin a mile from his secluded mountain home.

And her claim of time traveling doesn’t exactly compute.

It’s not long before sparks once again begin to fly between the former lovers. But Nadine
needs to get back to her mission before literary history is permanently damaged.
By the time she’s able to make the quantum leap back in time, Jane Austen and the
captain have already met again...and romance is brewing. To complicate matters, Xander
has made the trip, as well. And Xander is the unlikeliest ‘nerd-out-of-water’ ever to land on Regency shores.

But that’s where the fun begins...

MENTIONED IN "WHY WE LOVE JANE AUSTEN MOVIE ADAPTATIONS" AT MOVIEWEB.COM
FUTURE AUSTEN ADAPTATIONS IN DEVELOPMENT
"The Netflix film
Persuasion, which hit the masses over the summer, is the latest Austen book-to-film adaptation, and we hope to see more .... Austen herself became a character in a recent novel by May McGoldrick titled Jane Austen Cannot Marry, which would certainly work as a big-screen adaptation."

"Powerful and Poignant - Loved it!
I loved this book. I teared up reading this book. I can't reveal any spoilers but Nadine and Xander were such a wonderful couple, so perfect for each other, and the premise was so original I couldn't put the story down. A truly special story—one of the best I've read this year—by some of the most talented authors writing today."
— Jane Porter, NYT Bestselling Author

"I am NOT a sci-fi reader, so time travel isn't really my thing (though when I reviewed Outlander for Library Journal, I was enchanted). But I cannot resist the names of May McGoldrick and Jane Austen so I bought Jane Austen Cannot Marry and LOVED it—several compelling storylines / themes that tear at the heart, all deftly woven together.
— Evelyn Richardson, Bestselling Author

"A MUST READ!
Mix together a modicum of SciFi, a dose of historical fiction, and a sweet love story that's not overdone, and what do you get? This delightful novel!
Highly recommended!
— Karen McQuestion, Bestselling Author; GoodReads Review

"Jane Austen Cannot Marry is a delightful, complicated story full of adventure and romance....I was drawn into the story. It was full of action and adventure as well as sentiment and romance. I never had any idea what was coming next. The McGoldricks have created an intriguing world and will be continuing the series in the near future. Jane Austen Cannot Marry allows readers to experience history through an action-packed romance. Terrific writing makes the unbelievable believable."
— Diane Peterson, NovelsAlive Review

"Beyond brilliant! This is probably the best book I have read this year. Truly imaginative!
... This story, while it pays homage to Jane Austen and her work, reminds us that there are other authors, like this, who enhance our lives by their wonderful imagination. Well worth a read!"
— S. Zubik, BookBub Reviews

"A stunning and beautifully written time travel novel...unlike any other!
... A good indicator of a great novel is how much work you don't get done because all that you want to do is read and read. And then, when thoughts and images stay with you for days after and you keep thinking about what you have read - THAT is a great novel....I highly recommend this novel!"
— JenReviews4U

"A highly captivating and charmingly comic time-travel love story! ... I was fully prepared to enjoy JANE AUSTEN CANNOT MARRY; yet, I had no idea I would be so enchanted and enjoy it so much. What a delightful and fascinating read!"

As we all know, Austen herself is a mystery. She was an obscure young woman of the minor gentry, who never married and died tragically young. Her books were published anonymously, and original sales numbered only in the hundreds. It was not until 1870 that a biography was published by her nephew, and her novels were not critically applauded until the 1940's, when she finally became a 'household word'.

With echoes of Jasper Fforde's "Thursday Next" and Jodi Taylor's "Chronicles of St. Mary's" series, a super-secret government program is using time travel to correct literary errors resulting from early accidental interference in the cosmic timeline.

Nadine Finley is a Scribe Guardian from an apocalyptic Earth of 2078, whose assignment is to make certain Miss Jane Austen does not meet and marry a naval captain, Charles Gordon in the year 1811. If she weds, Austen's small but incredibly influential body of work – six novels, one short story – will cease to exist.

Somehow, Nadine gets kicked forward in time, where she meets the one man she shouldn't – Xander Nouri, the man she fell in love with during a past mission. She can't afford to fall in love again. She's only got three days to get her body chemistry realigned so that she can get back to 1811 and complete her current assignment.

Nadine loves Xander...but she's out of time, in more ways than one. Jane has already connected with Capt. Gordon again, and a proposal is imminent. When Xander somehow manages to follow her back to 1811, Nadine knows her mission is a failure.

How can she convince Austen to renounce her one true love? Especially when she can't bear to do the same thing to Xander?

I've been a fan of May McGoldrick (re: Nikoo & Jim McGoldrick) for years and have read all their older historic romance novels. Once I discovered Christian historic fiction, I switched to reading (and writing) that genre. I was drawn to this book because it is on the less-"spicy" side (but too many f-bombs for my taste), it's a time-travel tale — which is a genre I'm writing now, and because purchasing this book is a financial benefit for Nikoo who was diagnosed with breast cancer for the second time this year which may be incurable. All that being said, I was reminded why I've enjoyed their books so much — they are a talented team and write stories that intertwine real history with memorable fictional characters who don't always see eye-to-eye. Art imitates life in this story as our protagonist is also facing a major medical issue and has taken on the role of scribe guardian with the intent of not only saving priceless works of literature but extending her own life as well. This book was hard to put down as Nadine was constantly in jeopardy traveling between time and she had such an intense connection with Xander. Wasn't a fan of the gloomy outlook for life and the environment some 50 years from now. If scientists can figure out time travel, they'll certainly figure out how to deal with the environment and climate change... The ending of the story was somewhat ambiguous but it seems to makes sense as that's how things probably are in the author's life as well. My best to Nikoo as she continues her fight. Her life and work has made a difference in so many other people's lives, particularly mine, as I was inspired by her writing and style to become an historic fiction/romance author as well.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book and didn’t want it to end. I loved the combination of current, future and past settings, and the details of Jane Austen’s life enriched the story. My only qualm was with the end, which was too vague for me. But other than that, I highly recommend this read.

There is a great deal of depth to this romance, which on the surface seems a lighthearted time travel story. Instead it deals extensively with the theme of mortality, and what we choose to do with the time we have been given. The answers that three women come to along the way are diverse, but all are profound.

It’s also a lovely romance with good chemistry and misadventures to keep the reader enthralled.

Although I have never had the desire to read a time traveler’s themed book, when I was given this one as a gift, the opportunity arose and I embraced it. The research done by the writers which bring the character’s from 1811 to life was fascinating especially as the lifestyles were juxtaposed to those from 2022 and 2078.
I highly recommend this book and look forward to the sequel!

This book is about love, choices, life purpose, destiny and mortality. The authors have given us a beautiful gift. Faced with a personal health challenge and the reality of mortality, they created a way to share a perspective of life that illustrates just what is important. This touched my soul more than any book I've ever read.

UPDATE: I decided to give it the third star, because it really did give me a new appreciation of Jane Austen.

For me, every book starts out with five stars. I deducted three stars for these reasons:

⓵ It was so tedious, I couldn't wait to finish and get it over with.

⓶ Too much description slowed it down, which is probably why it was tedious.

⓷ The protagonist, who has well over a decade's experience doing what she does, makes a rookie mistake that even I wouldn't have made. And I have zero experience in her job.

⓸ At one point, the author pontificates about how people would write about Jane Austen as though they knew her, but they would be wrong; they wouldn't "get" her. She's right, of course, but that's exactly what the author is doing right at that very moment. I found that annoying, but I admit it probably wouldn't have bothered me if I liked the book more. By the time I'd gotten to that point, I really couldn't wait to get it over with.

Sorry I wasted my time, so...

NOT RECOMMENDED.

Highly recommended!

I couldn't put this one down. It was so well written and gave a taste of historical genre as well as sci-fi. The ending was refreshingly unpredictable. I thoroughly enjoy it.
