Longlisted for the McIlvanney Prize 2023

‘High adventure meets espionage thriller as Jonas Flynt battles the tide of history and the deadly secrets of his own past…’ D. V. Bishop, author of City of Vengeance

1715. Jonas Flynt, ex-soldier and reluctant member of the Company of Rogues, a shady intelligence group run by ruthless spymaster Nathaniel Charters, is ordered to recover a missing document. Its contents could prove devastating in the wrong hands.

On her deathbed, the late Queen Anne may have promised the nation to her half-brother James, the Old Pretender, rather than the new king, George I. But the will has been lost. It may decide the fate of the nation.

The crown must recover it at all costs.

The trail takes Jonas from the dark and dangerous streets of London to an Edinburgh in chaos. He soon realises there are others on the hunt, and becomes embroiled in a long overdue family reunion, a jail break and a brutal street riot.

When secrets finally come to light, about the crown and about his own past, Jonas will learn that some truths, once discovered, can never be untold…

An atmospheric and utterly compelling blend of crime, history and thriller, to delight fans of S. J. Parris, Andrew Taylor and C. J. Sansom.

Douglas Skelton has published 12 non fiction books, 12 contemporary crime thrillers and 2 historical thrillers. He has been a bank clerk, tax officer, shelf stacker, meat porter, taxi driver (for two days), wine waiter (for two hours), reporter, investigator and editor.

His first thriller BLOOD CITY was published in 2013.

The gritty thriller was the first in a quartet set on the tough streets of Glasgow from 1980 onwards. It was followed by CROW BAIT, DEVIL'S KNOCK and finally OPEN WOUNDS, which was longlisted for the first McIlvanney Prize for Scottish Crime Book of the Year in 2016.

His two Dominic Queste thrillers, THE DEAD DON'T BOOGIE and TAG - YOU'RE DEAD lightened the tone but didn't skimp on thrills.

He followed this with his New York-set chase thriller THE JANUS RUN in 2018.

THUNDER BAY, a dark and atmospheric tale of secrets, lies and murder, was published to great acclaim by Polygon in 2019. It was longlisted for the McIlvanney Prize for 2019. The series continued with THE BLOOD IS STILL, A RATTLE OF BONES ( longlisted for the McIlvanney in 2022) and WHERE DEMONS HIDE. All four titles have been released on audio by Isis Publishing. Entries in the series are available in the US in print and audio through Arcade CrimeWise, while translation rights have been sold to as Germany, Denmark, Greece and Sweden.

The 5th in the series, CHILDREN OF THE MIST, has now been published.

He also has a new series of historical adventure thrillers featuring gambler, thief and secret agent Jonas Flynt, beginning with AN HONOURABLE THIEF (2022, CANELO, longlisted for the McIlvanney Prize 2023) and A THIEF'S JUSTICE (Canelo 2023).

Douglas is often recruited by documentary makers to contribute to true crime shows on TV and radio and is a regular on the crime writing festival circuit.

He takes part in comedy shows with other crime writers. To date he has written three Carry on Sleuthing plays in which he also appears along with Caro Ramsay, Michael J. Malone, Theresa Talbot, Pat Young and Lucy Cameron, with occasional guests Alex Gray, Lin Anderson and Neil Broadfoot.

He is also one quarter of Four Blokes in search of a Plot, along with Gordon Brown, Mark Leggatt and Neil Broadfoot. This is a fun show in which they invited the audience to give them a murder weapon and a protagonist. They then take it in turns to create a crime story (usually developing into something wild and wacky) while also answering audience queries about the craft.

His one man event, You the Jury, invites audiences to deliver verdicts on real life but heavily disguised cases from around the world. In 2019 the format was extended into a court drama, thanks to the Faculty of Advocates in Scotland, within Stirling Sheriff Court played to three sell-out houses during the Bloody Scotland festival.

He was, with bestselling author Denzil Meyrick, a regular on the SBOOKS podcast.

The Queen has died. Leaving a German the heir to the throne. Desperate to uncover her will, Colonel Charters employs his best man, Jonas Flynt.
A man with many connections to the underworld and unsavory characters, Jonas stumbles upon the will, only to have a woman snatch it.
Forced to return to Scotland to retrieve the will and set the monarchy right, Jonas must track down this intriguing woman.
I loved these characters - noble. Oozing humanity and kindness with a hard edge. Very enjoyable historical intrigue suspense.

Many thanks to NetGalley and Canelo for this Advanced Reader Copy and the opportunity to review “An Honorable Thief.” All opinions and comments are my own.

This rousing “historical adventure thriller” finds ex-soldier Jonas Flynt caught between his Scottish family and friends and the necessity of fulfilling his (unwelcome) duty to the English court in “An Honorable Thief.” It becomes quite the page-turner, filled with derring-do and dark alleys, an alluring femme fatale, and plenty of crosses and double-crosses. Author Douglas Skelton, acknowledged for his many contemporary crime novels, obviously knows his way around “the mean streets,” whether it’s 21st century or 17th century Edinburgh.

Our premise: Did Queen Anne leave a will naming her Catholic half-brother, James as her successor? The Succession to the Crown Act says the Hanoverian Elector George Louis, conveniently Protestant, must come and take the throne. Can’t have a Catholic! Obviously, this document better not exist. And if it does exist, it’s got to be found and made to disappear. And that’s where Jonas comes in, for it becomes known that “a document” is supposedly in Scotland, being offered to the highest bidder.

Jonas Flynt is a fully-realized character, definitely a man of action. You’ll learn much about him, including a lot of family drama. Ah, just to be clear - there are a couple of rather horrific scenes, when Jonas is having flashbacks to some battlefield memories. They are very graphic, so be advised.

And for the history buffs, there’s quite a bit of that going around, too, with real people and historical topics included. If you know anything about James Stuart, the “Old Pretender,” as he was popularly styled, that knowledge can only come in handy. And near the end readers are at the Battle of Sheriffmuir, where all that has gone before comes to a head for Jonas -- and others. Finally, there’s rather an interesting “twist,” if you can call it that. I thought it was kind of a late-down after everything else, but that’s just me. This is the first in a series, so Jonas has definitely got work to do, and there are characters he will be meeting up with again, no doubt; remember that femme fatale I mentioned. “An Honorable Thief” delivers on that premise of “adventure thriller,” and should keep your attention from the beginning.

The end of the book offers up author’s notes which talk about the history behind the story, and what’s known about “that will.” Let’s just say that the American colonies gained their independence from a Protestant king, not a Catholic one. But that’s a bit in the future, isn’t it.

4.0 out of 5 stars A Very Promising Jonas Flynt Begin!

**Should Read as 4.25 STARS!**

This enjoyable and exciting historical adventure is the 1st part of the "Company of Rogues" series by the author, Douglas Skelton.

At the end of the book you'll notice an Historical and Author's Note, where the historical details and figures featuring in this great tale are wonderfully explained and pictured by the author.

Storytelling is brilliant, all characters come very much alive in this tale of secrets, lies and murder, while the hostile atmosphere between supporters of the Stuarts or the Hanoverians after the death of Queen Anne will come very much to the forefront also.

This story is about our protagonist, Jonas Flynt, ex-soldier but now due to certain circumstances more or less a pressed and reluctant member of the "Company of Rogues", run by spymaster Colonel Nathaniel Charters, and Jonas is ordered after the death of Queen Anne by this same Colonel Charters to recover a supposed written and now missing document, a missive that could cause bloody mayhem when it ends up into the wrong hands.

This document could contain a certain promise to her half-brother, James Stuart, to leave the Kingdom to him rather than the new Hanoverian King George I, and this document now seems to be circulating in Edinburgh and so Jonas is on his way there to try to retrieve it on behalf on Colonel Charters.

Soon enough Jonas will come to realise that other people are interested in that same document, for instance Lord Moncrieff and Lady de Fontaine and various others bonded within "The Fellowship", and some will a very high price for it in the end, while at the same time Jonas will meet his family and old friends again, like Cassie, Gideon, Mother Mercy, Charlie Temple and "Rab" Robert Gow, and that reunion will turn into a lot of hurt and death eventually to his family and friends also.

What is to follow is a captivating and intriguing historical adventure, one that has been superbly researched and executed, and where the historical details have been done justice, within this most memorable and refreshing story fashioned by the author.

Very much recommended, for this is a wonderful start to this historical adventure series, and that's why I like to call this first episode: "A Very Promising Jonas Flynt Begin"!

After a period of reading back to back fantasy fiction, I needed a nice historical diversion. This was it, and wow!

Early eighteenth century newly unionised Britain was a cauldron of emotions on all sides. This was a war of tertiary, or more sided proportions, there was no black and white enemy in the realm.

Pretenders, Fellowships, False-Monarchs et al. This was a very dangerous time to take any side. The common man and woman was better to stick to the simple life and leave the politicking to the zealous and the vile.

This story is very well balanced, plotted and the characters are very, very good, indeed! The author has captured the period and ephemeral perfectly. The sense of suspense and the pace is perfect. Read this!

5.0 out of 5 stars A cracking good read, full of intrigue and suspense.

What a cracking good read this is! It's the first in a new series featuring Jonas Flynt - the Honourable Thief. Despite his rather shady background he is a character I found myself warming to, and wishing him to succeed in his quest. It's set in 1715 when Queen Anne has dies and the country is rife with rumour about a secret letter naming her half brother James Stuart as her successor. The letter must be found at all costs and Jonas Flynt has been charged with finding it. It's a very dangerous mission as others are also desperate to recover the missive. The trail leads from London, north to Edinburgh and beyond.
Jonas heads to his childhood home in Edinburgh where he has to face the family and friends he left behind years before. Disturbing secrets are uncovered.
The dark and dirty streets of the Old Town are brought to life quite brilliantly by the author. I love the fact this is rooted in real history and cleverly woven in to a page turning novel. It's dark , disturbing, tense and fast paced and had me hooked from the start. I can't wait to read more in this series.

3.0 out of 5 stars Historical secret agent
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on December 11, 2022
Set in the early 18th century on the death of queen Ann. The historical context has some merit. Jonas Flynt is a semi-official investigative thug. Streetwise and cynical, working in secret for the state. The novel starts briskly in London then moves to Edinburgh where it gets a bit bogged down in Jonas’s childhood. There’s a graphic execution and the author brings 18th century Edinburgh and the Jacobites to life, but the core thrust of the story doesn’t move forward. As the participants move towards Stirling and the battle of Sheriffmuir the historical descriptions are good but story losses impetus and eventually dies.
Good historical setting and descriptions weak central story
