What if it wasn't an accident?

1969. Eloise Shepherd, one of MI6’s brightest rising stars, is working undercover in Soviet Russia as Magdalina Novikova. Her mission is to persuade nuclear physicist Stanislav Kalashnik to defect and bring his knowledge of Russian weapons back to the UK. On the verge of success, the operation fails suddenly and spectacularly.

17 years later, Kalashnik is Chief Engineer at the power plant near Pripyat known as Chernobyl. His concerns for the safety of the plant are growing. When his views lead to accusations that question his patriotism, he finds himself in a very risky position.

Meanwhile, back in London, Eloise Shepherd’s life and career are spinning out of control when she’s approached with a one-time offer to redeem herself. The mission: to get Kalashnik over Soviet borders once more. It’s an opportunity that could change everything and Eloise knows there’s no reward without risk. But she’s heading straight towards a danger far greater than she could ever have anticipated.

I just fell in love with this book. I love cold war stories and this is the ultimate one. It gives the reader a fictionalized view of what might have happened to cause the meltdown at Chernobyl . It follows the story of Eloise Shepard, a bright rising star in the MI6 Network. She is tasked with befriending Stanislav Kalashnik, a rising nuclear physicist and getting him to defect. The U K would like to tap his knowledge of Russian Nuclear weapons. Just as he is being whisked to a car to start the journey, everything fall apart.

In the 17 years since this event. He has risen to Chief Engineer at the power plant, now known as Chernobyl. Kalashnik is very concerned for the lack of safety protocols at the plant. He speaks out about the running of a simulated disaster drill that they are planning to run. His accusations make many in power, question his loyalty. So he is now in a very precarious position with his superiors.

Back in London Eloise Shepherd is having trouble in both her personal life and career. When she is approached with an offer to redeem herself. The mission is to go back to the Soviet Union and once again bring Kalashnik back across the border. She sees this as a mission that could restore her status as a top trusted agent again. The problem with the mission is she will be stationed in an area with no legitimate reason for her to be there. So if she is caught, she will on her own with no support.

Like most Cold War missions, not everyone is who they say they are and not everything is as it appears. So there will be many twists and turns before the mission is completed.

The myriad lines of adventures continues. One of the best of the dozens of novels this author put together, with a common base and all new and unexpected twist and turns. Totally entertaining and fulfilling.

Even though it’s a work of fiction, it’s eerie that it catalogs the things that had to go wrong for the actual events that occurred in real life for that catastrophe failure to occur.

Well written. Easy to follow. Reads more like a history lesson than a work of fiction. I would definitely read more from this author.

One tale as only Mark Dawson could tell it that is a story of espionage, Russian defectors, families destroyed, murders, lies and ultimately the question that's on Vivian Bloom's mind, just how would I go about making a group of men and women 'cleaners' that could mop up after an operation went sideways?
Yes, that disheveled, powerful Vivian Bloom. The man Control reports to in Group Fifteen. This story still predates the Group!

No novel should distort the truth about what happened at Chernobyl, without a disclaimer that sabotage is pure fiction. The insane test that the communists performed that caused supercriticality is missing from the plot. And the American nuclear industry have a containment, not because reactors can blow up (they cant) but because they can have fuel melt.

Mark this was an excellent book. The whole plot with Bloom and the under cover agent in disgrace from 20 years ago was perfect setup to revisit the situation again. The poor Russian was played all the way around. All he wanted to do was make everyone aware of Russia lack of nuclear safety. In end he was used also. Great story 10 stars plus!!!! Thanks, Carl Clause. by

Dawson’s work is uniformly excellent, readable and its many plot threads are endlessly fascinating. This book goes back beyond the beginning and also moves the author firmly into a new dimension of intrigue at the highest of geopolitical levels. Great stuff.

A great book and brilliant read. Clearly well researched and thought provoking on the "What if...." scenario. Loved the use of some known characters (You don't need to know them if this is your first Mark Dawson or anything related to Group fifteen book).

My wife read it too (her first foray into Marks books!) and she loved it, didn't speak to me whilst reading - a very good sign!

I would have to say that if you want a good read, this is it. Mind you, any Mark Dawson book is a good read. We have every book he has written and even though this is his latest book, (FEB 22.)
I cannot pick which one of his books I could genuinely say , THIS IS THE BEST BOOK MARK HAS WRITTEN. Because they are all that bloody good.

Mark has delivered again . I didn't think I would be interested in a book about Russia
and nuclear power but it was very well done.

Doubtful at the start but it has delivered. It was the type of story once in you didn’t want to put down. Worthy of a prequel.
