4.5 4.5 out of 5 stars 2,141 ratings

From the author of the thrillers The Winter Over and Birthday Girl comes the eighth book in the best-selling Marty Singer Mystery series.

“If you’re reading this, then you haven’t heard from me in three weeks, maybe more. If that’s the case, call Marty Singer. He’ll know what to do.”

That’s the note Elizabeth Reynolds, ex-wife of friend and former US Marshal Karl Schovasa, hands retired cop Marty Singer. Schovasa’s missing after trying to guide a young addict away from being exploited by a fake rehab center, and all signs point to foul play. In a bid to save both of them, Marty heads south to Palm Beach to take on a cabal of crooks, con men, and drug dealers that operate at will up and down the East coast. They’re the masterminds of a scam worth millions...a scam they’re willing to kill for if it stops Marty from

I'm a fan who has read all of Matt Iden's published work that I could find and my favorite is still Marty Singer stories and this one is no different: Great! Really good writer, well-developed, excellent main character, etc. Just very well done all the way up and down the line from every angle and checking off all the boxes. Also no unnecessary gore either which I do not enjoy reading, thinking or visualizing.

The other side of the pie is the subject matter: drugs - a society too short of hope and people without sufficient inner strength to generate ways forward. These are some of the main ingredients in this well-told tale. I enjoyed the writing, even with computer problems randomly popping up.

This is exactly what I look forward to with Matt Iden's stories and I hope you do too: Not enough to keep you up all night, but enough to seriously hold your interest and clip thru several chapters at a time. Thank you.

If I had a chance to download earlier yesterday I would have finished it yesterday, but sometimes you have to do work stuff. But I was waiting for #8 Marty Singer Mystery so I download first chance I got and I was not disappointed.

The plot was interesting too, I’m friends with a person whose organization places drug addicts in treatment centers and he has shared Florida treatment centers are well known for insurance fraud.

This book satisfies my two favorite criteria for a crime novel – 1) is the crime so plausible you assume it must be happening somewhere? 2) is it plausible that law enforcement wouldn’t be involved because it’d be too expensive to investigate on the federal level, not a big enough driver of overtime and bonuses on the municipal level? “Chasing the Pain” pulls this off with aplomb. An exciting, fast-paced story, Iden’s cast of characters and occasional wry humor here reminds me of the best of Gregory McDonald’s Fletch novels without losing Marty Singer’s hard-bitten edge. No hyperbole, I couldn’t put this down, reading it in two days as I had to know what happened next and how the mystery would turn out. Oh, and one more thing—as a former Gulf Coaster myself, I need Madame Cormier (and George) to appear in any sequel or spin-off.

Insurance fraud is a major problem for the economy in our cost conscious society. The road that fraud takes, varies, but it’s goal is always the same…. to scam the economy for the financial profit of unscrupulous health care providers. It is a scourge that touches us all, at least due to increased premiums we pay for insurance coverage, and at worst, a disruption of our very lives.
This story deals with drug addiction, principally among the young people of a generation. Kids that have been kicked aside by society, and become aimless. Feeling they are without a future, they turn to drugs and its deadly effects on their lives. Those that can, seek out a health care insurance provider. And, this is where this story begins.

I don’t re tell story lines in my reviews, but, the issue here begins with an individual with a drug dependency problem seeking care from a Health Care Facility. Health Care Insurance extends coverage, ether directly to an individual, or more commonly, to a family member, via a Family Insurance Health Care Policy. The individual seeks care, which the Facility provides, and, in a perfect world, the former drug dependent person is cleaned of their addiction and returns to a normal way of life.
Nice. But in this story the needed medical care is not provided, and the cost for same, charged to the insurance carrier, is absorbed into the coffers of the supposed health care facility. Mean while, the drug habit of the individual continues unabated, leading in most cases to an over dose and ultimately even death, which not only affects the individual, but also family members as well.
The Plot deals with the ingenuity of the these health care facilities, in their ability to attract drug dependent individuals. They then resort to “Chasing the Pain” of their patients, by making excessive claims to the insurer, but really providing no legitimate care. What is left is for their patients to deal with the consequences of their dependency. At this point the story line of what happens turns rather grisly.
In fairness, the story line in places is tinged with humor, and, at times, is even “Keystone Kops” funny. But, in the last analysis, the Plot of the book becomes extremely gripping.
Near the conclusion of the read I was left with a quote that I thought summed up the point of the book: “There’s more money in rehab than in anything else in Florida except drugs, real estate, and politics,…”(Kindle location 2828).
In my estimation, this book, does not warrant a 5 star review, as in, “I loved it”. But, in recognition of the author’s examination into the real goal of these “health care” providers, easily makes this a “5” star read.

Matt Iden’s Marty Singer is back, searching for a friend gone missing and finding a heap of trouble. Taut, well written, but be aware that the twists and turns of Marty’s investigation take him into territory that’s not for the faint hearted. Marty’s new sidekick Madame is a wonderfully drawn character, reminiscent of Robert B. Parker’s Hawk and deserving a book (or a series!) of his own. Recommended!

The newest edition to the Marty Singer series, "Chasing the Pain", is a fun fast paced read. It starts with Marty Singer searching for his friend, ex US Marshall Karl Schovasa, in Northern VA. The search leads him into the dark underbelly of addiction, rehab and insurance fraud, set in the less touristy areas of Palm Beach. The book brings to life the struggle of addiction and loss that is so prevalent in our society today, but in a way that does not bog down the reader. The book introduces us to new characters (that I really hope we will see in future books) and makes for an enjoyable read.

4.0 out of 5 stars Another Enjoyable and Entertaining Marty Singer Adventure!
Reviewed in Canada on February 1, 2021
I read the first Marty Singer mystery “A Reason to Live” several years ago and was hooked. Marty Singer is a retired homicide detective, an ordinary type of guy, honourable, old fashioned, human, and one who has battled cancer. When I heard Matthew Iden was releasing #8 “Chasing The Pain”, I was thrilled.

Chasing The Pain, like the previous seven Marty Singer novels is a hard boiled mystery written with humor, action, descriptive scenery, and interesting main characters. The novel is what I call a quick read. For readers who cannot wait to find out the ending, or for those who prefer an easy read, it’s a good thing. Personally, I would have liked a few more chapters as the end seemed to come too quickly. Perhaps that’s a sign of a good and entertaining story.

Like the previous Marty Singer mysteries, Chasing The Pain can be read as a stand alone novel. However, reading the previous seven mysteries first may give readers a better sense of who Marty Singer is.

I hope Matthew Iden has a #9 Marty Singer adventure in the works!
