MS. Andersen writes a good story, but I'm beginning to think some of these Lords have more of a reputation than really have the problems. Not that I'm complaining just trying to understand how they can be scandalous and keep doing good works. They are rather studley.

I confess I expected this book would be the story of , the cousin of the previous books’ heroine’s.
Even if I now remember the last book gave an inkling of the next book to come.

The heroine was so a new character, a kind of Cinderella abused by her villain of a father, until a knight in rather shining armor steps in and rescues her.
So she will have to get to know and trust this stranger who has suddenly become the most important person in her life.
Austin has by his sole will build his mind and body to be strong enough to resist the illness that devoured him when he was a child and a young. Yet he is still controlled by the nightmares of this time, scared to relive the worst moments of his life, why he lives his emotions frugally.
I understand his fears even if now they are behind. But having been a sickly kid my whole childhood, I grasp his anxiety as intense emotions or a good fright can in a blink of an eyes triggers an asthma attack.

Their romance is sweet and easy once they share their struggles and worries.

The H has been talked about very little in the previous stories of the series. The flow from the sister's stories and the owners of the Den seemed disjointed. Even though part of a series, is a stand alone.

I did like the H/h and we discover when a child the H had lung problems. Because his last episode was when he was with a women, 10 years ago, he is scared to make his marriage real. Even though several people told him the h's father would do anything to show the marriage wasn't a true marriage. He still held back having relations with his wife.

The H always was very physical in running and chopping wood with no episodes. Plus the doctors told him he was cured. I felt sorry for the h in his reasonings. She had a beautiful spirit and was also a beautiful women who was treated badly by her father.

There is lovemaking (finally) within marriage, heat level 4 out of 5.

A nasty villain, some twists, no cheating, no cliffhanger, an epilogue 1 year in the future, and steam. Ended at 90% on my e-reader. (ljb)

This was one of the better stories. I know that I was a surprise in 1938 when I was conceived as my Dad surfered with Asthma too and I was born in ‘39. I had spells of asthma and still take medicine for it.

Immeasurably lovely. This has to be the only one from the series, so far, that I truly deem can be read as a standalone as you won't constantly feel you are either missing something or being left out of the loop. Even with the few cameo appearances from much loved familiar faces to enjoy too.
[With that said it's worth reading the Baron of Blasphemy first as we finally get to meet Vanity (Austin) and get to glimpse a few clues as to the man's thoughtful and compassionate character. Not to mention, witness the pair's first encounter and the overwhelming effect Gabriella and her plight has on Austin - It's priceless!!!]
I just love the different air that surrounds this one. It still has an atmospheric plot shaped by peril, fueled by a villian so easy to hate which adds the tummy turning tension, I find so compelling. Yet, the known roguish history of each lord that is so central to the previous books is missing here as Vanity's nature highlights the opposite. Plus, the pair are embarking on a marriage initiated as complete strangers so there is no misperceptions that can be drawn from a shared past or hearsay. Both appear a delightfully blank canvas to unravel.
Austin riddled with anxiety, surrounding his poor health as a child, causes him to be overly cautious and steer clear of anything that might hinder it. Generating a crippling fear that losing control in the height of passion, a likely risk seeing the intense desire that radiates from him whenever Gabriella is near, will cause a debilitating asthma attack. Therefore, he desperately tries to keep her at arms length, as he has with every other woman since he turned 16. Consequently, the chemistry, uncertainity and honesty that flares and flourishes as a result is beautiful to witness as the couple attempt to navigate the enigma and intimacy of an unexpected marriage.
A sweetly intimate and quietly tender romance between two such gentle and kind people, stems from a rescue bred from happenstance, spontaneity and moral duty. Blossoms so heartmeltingly into a truly absorbing love with the power to crumble internal walls and spark a deep connection that was so riveting to watch. A fabulous addition to the series!

Austin had his own problems which definitely did not allow for a wife.
