4.6 4.6 out of 5 stars 794 ratings

STAND-ALONE MURDER MYSTERY, #16 IN THE SERIES. MEET MAVERICK BRITISH DETECTIVE DI SKELGILL... "MAD, BAD AND JUST A LITTLE BIT COZY."

NOBODY SAW HER. NOBODY CAN FIND HER. When 37-year-old Lisa Jackson sets out for work one Friday morning she is in high spirits. Things are going well with her new boyfriend. But when she does not reach her desk, or answer her mobile phone, her colleagues and family raise the alarm.

Suspicion immediately falls on co-worker Ray Piper. A married man, he and Lisa have recently ended an affair. But steely-eyed Piper denies any knowledge of Lisa’s disappearance.Yet as the police begin to piece together her last movements – and match them to those of her ex-lover – a narrative emerges that leads to only one possible conclusion.

With Skelgill and DS Leyton otherwise engaged, it falls to DS Emma Jones to head the investigation – a chance for the bright young detective to shine. But soon she finds herself engaged in a deadly battle of wits with a cold and calculating adversary. Will she hold her nerve? Will she succeed alone? And what will happen if she does not find Lisa – for no body undermines her case.

As the trial date nears, hopes begin to fade – Lisa is gone without trace. And a scheming killer may walk free.

This was a change, I enjoyed reading Murder Unseen because it is written differently than the other books. Skelgill is taking a roll where he is delegating and letting his sergeants take a more active role. I missed Skelgill in the lead however it seemed like the story was a little slow until the `Guv became involve. Great story, I was guessing. Thanks Bruce for your great characters and writing!

Once again Bruce Beckham has written another Skelgill investigates book that I couldn’t put down . Absolutely brilliant series of crime books and would recommend reading them. The only problem is don’t expect to read any other books until you have finished this whole series. On to the next one I go.

The Skelgill mysteries never disappoint. Great voice and good consistent character interplay. A bit formulaic but solidly written. Not literature but a deft flow to enjoyable writing.

I enjoyed this one, as I have all the previous ones. To have DS Jones take the lead in solving the mystery was an added pleasure.

This is a twist on the regular Skelly books and features his sidekick Emma Jones. The plot is a corker and use of red herrings is tops. As a lover of the Lake District and a geologist Mr Beckham clearly loves the area as I do. Please if feasible incorporate my rabbit hole, Bowscale Tarn , Into a future book. Spent many happy hours mapping in the area. Read them all, in sequence for a fantastic ride.

Another delightfully spun Lake District mystery. Nice to see both of DI Skelgill's DS' standing front and center. Great camaraderie and team effort sleuthing. A bonus treat to myself is following LakeDistrict on Instagram and enjoying the scenery in living color. Waiting ever so patiently for the next book!

DS Emma Jones takes the lead on a missing person's case while DI Slelgill takes an pre-planned fishing guide vacation. DS Leighton has his own case of several firearm thefts from isolated farms. The case begins to feel sinister even though a body hasn't been found. The missing person is a single working woman not that much older than Emma so she emphasizes with her distraught senior parents. The case utilizes all Emma's strengths- her empathy and meticulous attention to detail and dedication to the job at hand. And she will need to be on the top of her game because if it is indeed a murder most foul, her adversary is clever, ruthless and determined to escape justice. As always, this newest addition to the series is clever, well researched and immersed in the people, their way of life and the gorgeous scenery of the Lake District.

Rich in geographical, epistemological and historical references.
A cast of disparate yet complimentary characters, plausible police procedure, engaging dialogue plus plots and twists to entertain the discerning mystery buff.
I highly recommend Mr. Beckham's creative genius.

Spoiler alert. Enjoyed the cat and mouse aspect of this one. There is really only one suspect from pretty early on but how they go about catching this person is the enjoyment of the book.

I like this series — the characters are fun and interesting — and this one was no exception.
The difference this time, though, is that Emma was in charge, and , of course, her methods are very different than Skelgill’s.
And although we didn’t see much of Skelgill, as Emma’s mentor, he was ever-present in Emma’s thinking and planning.
Some odd coincidences, quite a few laughs — this was a fun story. Recommended.

Just love this series, although I am glad I have the dictionary function on the kindle as I have to look up a new word nearly every chapter! Still these books are written in a unique style and I love it. Also you really warm to the three main characters. This makes the difference.

I’ve enjoyed this series ever since I looked for crime fiction set in the Lake District as part of my experience at an embroidery retreat in that part of England about four years ago. It served my purposes well - giving me a background and setting I’d be hard pressed to absorb from a tourist guide - and good crime fiction to boot.

So I was delighted, on the other side of the world, with no prospect of travelling in a pandemic, to discover an addition to the series and be able to purchase and read it within 3 days of publication.

I was not disappointed. This is a great read on many fronts. The familiar characters are there and so is the landscape and lifestyle detail that makes the story hum and grab. More than that, there is a transition happening, Beckham bringing forward DS Jones and focusing on her thought processes, fears, deductions, insecurities and growth, all within reach of Skelgill’s guidance. By the end, this reader is ready, if not to simply transfer allegiance, to have more than one interest and loyalty in future narratives. Clever in both plot and writing.

My only criticism is in the length of the trial sequences. I see the narrative summary purpose, but think it is a bit lengthy and laboured. Nevertheless, this is a treat, a perfect antipodean Summer read in a year when a Lake District retreat is unobtainable.

I have read and enjoyred all of this series This story was one of the best. Again like meeting old friends Only Skellgill is not so old , occasionally we get a chance to do the sums to find he is in his thirties surprise , surprise. because he comes over as an older guy. Obsessed by his fishing , he just might miss catching Emmsa Jones . I do wish he would get a move on.
I find there is little use of going over the plot., but would like to say this was an excellent police procedure tale.
I have been a regular visitor to the Lakes for over sixty years but find interesting facts and also places worth finding by reading Bruce Bekham,s enjoyable writing.
Power to your pen Bruce.
