4 simple words but possibly the most adequate when it comes to Emma Scott's latest masterpiece. Fiercely touching, When You Come Back to Me is one extraordinary read. There were many times while reading this book where my own thoughts became muted, my mind consumed with all things Holden and River. The absolute superb quality of writing rendered me speechless. The way Scott took great care in telling Holden Parrish's story, the boy who seemingly was forever stuck in winter. Stumbling upon the light and bit of warmth he needed when he found River Whitmore, this story is beyond anything I could've imagined.
There is a world of hurt and a lifetime of pain but the hope that maybe, just maybe Holden and River could be each other's salvation made this at times brutally gut-wrenching story worth all the agony. There were times and I imagine it for every reader of this book, where I couldn't decide who I adored more. Holden, with his dramatic flair and dry humor, the way he hid his inner turmoil yet felt love even when he thought he wasn't worthy of it. Holden is simply a character who finds a way into your soul. You meet him once and he forever leaves a mark. And as much as this is his book, our 2nd Lost Boy, how can I deny equal billing to River? His selfless nature. Always the protector of not only his struggling family but the man who would ultimately claim his heart forever. River's light to Holden's dark...oh my goodness, for two such opposite spirits, it amazed me just how in tune they were to the other.
Both of them simply wanted to love on their own terms and yet had to hide away any real feelings while in public even as the fires burned even hotter between them in private. The utter disgrace of what Holden endured in Alaska is truly the crux of this book. No matter how much he tried, no matter who attempted to be there for him, it hurt my heart to watch as he always stood back a foot or two even from his fellow lost boys. From his aunt and uncle. From River. The feeling of never belonging, never having any true affection thrown his way, I suppose it shocked him when that crazy power of love started to seep within his very being. With the unheard-of notion that perhaps maybe he could start to believe in himself and those who really did care for him.
Emma Scott made me cry many times throughout this story. And what is so magical about her prose is that for me it wasn't during those most dire of times, with the retelling of such horrific memories. It was those moments, those touching movie nights where a head rested on a shoulder, a slap on the back, watching the stars from an old truck bed or meeting the woman who only wanted the best for her proud son and grateful she had the time. Those are the times that had me choked up and teary-eyed.
This story is exquisitely-told and is about as emotionally-charged a book as I have ever read. Scott's rhythm never falters and the faith she has in her characters elevates them to where they not only find their place but truly believe that anything is possible. With all the madness that surrounds this love story, and it's not just Holden's past but very much River's present and future that attempts to derail them over and over, I was incredibly proud at the growth these two young men displayed, with that hard-fought HEA finally in their grasp.
This journey is filled with trepidation and uncertainty but it's one that inspires hope and perseverance. It also shows once more that fate likes to rear her head and give a nudge in the right direction when two troubled souls need it most. Holden and River are truly memorable and I can't wait to see them again when Ronan's story is told. In fact, it was great to be with Violet and Miller and I enjoyed getting a new side to some key moments in their love story.
Wishing I could give this book 10++ stars, When You Come Back to Me is destined to be at the top of many best of lists for 2020 and I happily give it a HUGE 5++++++ stars! Bravo!
Holden's personality is larger than life in a brilliant package of extravagance, perceptiveness, eloquence and boundary pushing. Suffice to say, I absolutely loved Holden. I couldn't get enough of hearing his voice, which Emma Scott nailed so perfectly and completely. He embodies the kind of guy who appears so transparent, that he has nothing to hide, yet Holden is hiding everything behind a shield to keep everyone at arm's length and ready to bolt at a moment's notice. He is very sensitive and tender deep down inside and the wounds residing in there refuse to heal.
River Whitmore is the quintessential star quarterback of his football team with a promising future NFL career, on top of being very smart academically. His life plans are already mapped out, but River feels trapped in the box. Having to already juggle the impending loss of his mother along with all of the responsibilities related to his dad and sister, River is stuck between a rock and a hard place. There is no room in his life for someone as unpredictable and attention grabbing as Holden, especially with the questions and feelings he invokes in River.
River is truly a simple and sweet guy at heart. There's a certain pureness and innocence to him that is beyond endearing and heartwarming. Although he's dealt with tragedy and judgment, River is not tainted by corruption and pretentiousness. Navigating in unchartered territory with Holden is frightening to him, especially when River knows what the stakes are given the fragile balance he's barely able to hang on to as it is. It wouldn't take more than the pull of a thread to unravel everything. River tends to lean on the side of caution more than anything to avoid any additional burden, but he can't deny the flare of excitement that Holden lights up in him.
The tug of war between these two guys is so well illustrated given their circumstances and age. I lived for the angst and tension building up because it promised to be a combination of explosive and impassioned, with hearts and souls gluing together. When they bare their real selves, complete with raw vulnerability and stark truths, it's really something special to behold and those scenes slayed me. I was constantly surprised by their words and actions, how bold and brave they already are, but it was only the beginning of their journey to where they become even bolder and braver later on. The things they put on the line and the sacrifices they made had my heart tumbling in all directions with an outpouring of emotions. Emma Scott didn't hold anything back when she wrote about these two guys, that much is evident in her impeccable prose. Their growth and transformation highlighted how well they were made for each other despite seeming like opposites at first glance. This story reminds us that love has no boundaries or conditions and love in its purest form will always prevail. Definitely a must read.

Al principio, me costó adaptarme a la pluma de la autora, pero sin duda la historia y los personajes valen la pena!
Me encantó y solo hace que los libros MM me fascinen aún más.
The author made me feel everything.
Absolutely loved it and still thinking about the boys a lot.
Would 100% recommend reading it!
Holden, I just wanted to take hold of him and protect him from any further torment in his young life. Made to feel so unloved and unworthy by parents and so called therapists. 👿😭🤬. At 15 years old he is forced to undergo Conversion Therapy which nearly killed him, the to recover from that trauma, he’s sent off to Europe to a Sanatorium to repair the damage done to him and his Mental Health.
When he’s released from there, he is left in the care of an aunt and uncle, in Santa Cruz in California. He registers at a College to complete his senior year.
Super intelligent, he flies through his college classes, and surprisingly, despite the walls he’s built to protect himself, he made a few friends, Ronan, a loner a a bit of a vigilante, and Matty, a budding musician, singer. He also meets River Whitemore, the College Quarterback, who makes all Holden’s defences crumble. But River is straight, at least he tells himself that, because his Dad wants him to make it to NFL heights in football.
Holden Parish is a force to be reckoned with and River soon discovers his true self and then, there is no stopping the chemistry and passion between these two young men, only 17/18 years old.
Holden and River’s friends also have huge issues in their lives and this author did an excellent job in giving them a voice as well as the two MC’s.
When I saw Conversion Therapy mentioned I nearly decided not to read this book. It just breaks my heart to pieces at the cruelty that parents could inflict on their children.
Several times I had to slam my tablet closed and walk away when I became to enraged and upset.
Holden did frustrate me at times, he desperately wanted River, but then he says mean stuff, pushes Fiver away and disappears for long periods of time. But for all his past suffering I forgave him.
Usually when I read MM books about MC’s at such a young age I think it’s unrealistic they’ll last the long haul. But the title here clues the reader in.
Holden and River’s story will stick in my memory for a long time.
Again, I’ve read this short series out of sequence, and started on Book 2, but I’ve got Book 1 and 3, lined up already.
This is my first book by this author. Emma Scott is a fabulous storyteller and her attention to detail and character building for the two MC’s and several of the side characters had me adding several of her books to my WTR List.
Excellent read and highly recommend adding it to your reading list.
The writing was beautiful and some of the sentences had me staring at the wall thinking about them.
