A Twist of the Blade (Shadows and Crowns Book 2) Kindle Edition
Mercenary. Survivor. Queen.
Who is Casia Greythorne?
Still reeling from an unimaginable loss and the revelation of an identity she isn’t sure she wants to embrace, Casia has one plan: Try to control something. Something like the strange magic awakening inside of her. Mastering that magic will take her and her friends on a quest through cursed lands, into the dwellings of old gods, and deep into a southern empire filled with deadly foes and unlikely allies.
Meanwhile, the foundations of the Kethran Empire continue to crumble. The king-emperor clings to his crown with increasingly bloodied hands. Monsters and soldiers alike stalk Casia's every step, determined not to let her return to claim a throne that is rightfully hers. Still, the greatest threat to her possible rule may not lie in the king-emperor, but in a former captain of his army—a man that she came dangerously close to falling in love with.
Elander Revenmar thought he knew who he was. He had a mission, a plan, a god he was content to serve. Then came Casia. A woman as mysterious as she is dangerous. One he should have stayed away from, and whose life he never should have saved.
Because salvation always comes with a cost.
And some debts can only be paid for in blood.

Shadows and Crowns is the second series set in a world made up of three empires that are collectively known as The Marrlands, where the magic is messy, the gods are restless, and kingdoms rise and fall on a regular basis.
This series will have five books total.
The first series set in this world is the Serpents and Kings trilogy, but it is not necessary to have read that one before reading this one. They feature different main characters and can be read and understood in any order! Another trilogy set in this world is coming in Fall 2022.

However, the story moved along well and was interesting. I think things are overly hard. The MC never caught a break. They hit every wall and pull themselves over by pure determination. It gets a little redundant. If things seem too impossible, it's not really even believable that the characters keep moving forward. There has to be SOME hope, and that was missing in this book. They have zero chance in the end.
*This book is rated R. The F word is used more than once, but less than five times. There is magic violence that is bloody but no gore. There is a spice scene, but it is very mildly descriptive and brief.
I love the enemies to lovers trope, but I really think the found family trope in this series is underrated. The entire crew is extremely likable and keeps me so engaged and wanting more.

Boek 1 en 3 werden al snel geleverd. Boek 2 kwam veel later aan en ziet er gehavend uit. Voor een nieuw boek vind ik dit niet ok. Ziet er tweedehands uit vergeleken met de andere 2 boeken.

Friendships were convenient and not developed enough.
Still not good enough to recommend it. It’s def not nearly as good as FB&A🤷♀️
Honestly it’s so refreshing to have an actual strong male character rather then one that is really just hegemonic masculinity dressed up as ideal masculine traits.
I also love that both the MC have weaknesses but they are embraced and accepted by their partner.
“Pain is not a competition. Everyone has their own battles. Their different hells. Different demons. And you don’t have to apologize for the things that hurt you, as I said, or for what you have to do to survive these things—not to me or to anyone else.”
