Who is Casia Greythorne?

The first series set in this world is the Serpents and Kings trilogy, but it is not necessary to have read that one before reading this one. They feature different main characters and can be read and understood in any order! Another trilogy set in this world is coming in Fall 2022.

I have enjoyed the first 2 books in this series. These are the first books I have read from this author. I do enjoy the books, the characters and relationships, but for some reason I feel like it is missing something. As if the authors goes deep enough to pass into your feels, but not deep enough to latch on to me and make me wallow, if that makes sense. It’s like there is so much potential for a real deep connection or deep moment, but it is only scratching the surface, not going deep enough to really draw me in. I do not really like the way the author just jumps over really good character development moments. I.e. all the sudden she is going from kings and queens doubting if she can become a queen, even herself doubting, to all the sudden she is involved in strategy and war meetings and all the sudden becoming friends with the queen, all of which we don’t get to witness because it is just jumped right over. Those are the characters developed moments that make you become over invested in your main character. This whole book I felt like I was trying to force myself to have feelings for the characters, you know when you try to take a deep breath but only ever can take shallow breaths, never reaching the deep lungs, the deep breath, that’s how I felt in this book. Never able to take that deep satisfying breath. I will read the next one, I hopes that it gets better. I will say, over all the whole world and bones of the characters are good, it’s just missing this claws in my heart, staying up until the early morning hours can’t get enough, must know what happens next feel.

Why are the second books of series so amazing? Like the first book was great but the second one had me on the edge of my seat, squealing and kicking my feet. Cas and the crew are a dynamic bunch, and I am so excited to see what happens next. The pantheon is so expansive and I love how in-depth it is and it’s not like an info dump either. The reincarnation trope is one of my favorites and my theory about Casia was correct!

*Small Spoiler Alert* At least in Song of the Marked, I enjoyed the enemies to lovers relationship development, that is until the actual consummation. It was such a let down. I was really disappointed in Elander's performance. I feel like the sex was written by a man with no real idea of what a woman wants. In this book, they're back to enemies and there's practically no relationship between them whatsoever for a good portion of it. Its not until she starts on her tedious journey, and I do mean tedious, of self discovery that he starts to take an active interest in her again. I skipped large sections of the book and didn't really miss anything, including more sub par sex where her orgasm was an afterthought. I won't be reading the next book. I can't get interested in the plot enough to overlook the totally bland spice.

Don't explain anything trope

This book was filled with the misunderstanding/ don't talk to each other trope because they are all so afraid of what others think. That is fine for 1 or 2 characters, but not the whole cast. Someone has to say something! If you love someone, you don't keep things that could affect them to yourself.
However, the story moved along well and was interesting. I think things are overly hard. The MC never caught a break. They hit every wall and pull themselves over by pure determination. It gets a little redundant. If things seem too impossible, it's not really even believable that the characters keep moving forward. There has to be SOME hope, and that was missing in this book. They have zero chance in the end.
*This book is rated R. The F word is used more than once, but less than five times. There is magic violence that is bloody but no gore. There is a spice scene, but it is very mildly descriptive and brief.

A Twist of the Blade is the second book in the Shadows & Crowns series that picks up in Oblivion where the first book left off. This book is an epic fantasy adventure and you will not want to put it down. I truly love Casia’s character and like in the first book, I found her struggles with mental health incredibly relatable. One of my favorite parts about this book and series is Casia’s crew and the found family vibes. The banter in this series is so well written and I found myself already so attached to these characters just two books in. And of course the relationship between Casia and Elander is a slow burn chef’s kiss in my opinion, the library scene was one of my favorites(iykyk). If you love enemies to lovers, epic battles, and found family vibes, then I highly recommend you start this series!

I love the enemies to lovers trope, but I really think the found family trope in this series is underrated. The entire crew is extremely likable and keeps me so engaged and wanting more.

I’m really enjoying this series. I just love the relationship between the two MC.

Honestly it’s so refreshing to have an actual strong male character rather then one that is really just hegemonic masculinity dressed up as ideal masculine traits.

I also love that both the MC have weaknesses but they are embraced and accepted by their partner.
