Sign of the Maker (Boston Crime Thriller Book 4) Kindle Edition
Acclaimed author Brian Shea is back with SIGN OF THE MAKER, the fourth book in his heart-pounding Boston Crime Thriller Series.
“Brian Shea is the real deal,” —Steve Konkoly, USA Today Bestselling Author of the Ryan Decker Series
When a bomber targets the city he loves, Detective Kelly must decide how far he’ll go to stop them.
A blast rips through downtown Boston on an early October morning and Detective Michael Kelly races to the scene. But before he can begin to make sense of the attack, another explosion sends shockwaves through the city.
Reeling, and desperate for answers, Kelly and his team begin a citywide manhunt. The only clue from the blast site leads Kelly to an inmate — who is less than eager to help.
As Kelly hones in on the forensics, his source reveals the killer’s next targets. Armed with this knowledge, Kelly and his team rush to get out ahead of the mysterious murderer.
But with the city at stake and the clock literally ticking, one wrong move could have catastrophic consequences.
Can Kelly catch the bomber before time runs out?

- Reviewed in the United States on September 3, 2024This was my favorite Michael Kelly book so far. It wrapped up quickly but the story line was very good. Growing up outside of Boston, I love the references to geographic landmarks and towns heading into the south shore. I was edge of my seat for most of this read.
- Reviewed in the United States on May 28, 2021This wasn't my favorite story in the Boston Crime Series, but IMHO it was the best written thus far. Brian has been hitting all the highlights in the world of crime dramas, and this time it's about stopping a mad bomber.
Like all of Shea's books in this series, it hits the ground running and doesn't stop until the end. This time however, the explanation/exposition was kept to a minimum, so the pacing stayed pretty consistent since the very first chapter. There were a few new characters we got some background on, and they felt fleshed out quite nicely for the most part. The plot takes you on a couple twists and turns, and somehow ends where things sort of started in the investigation.
Despite praising the development of new characters, only one of them actually paid off, and that one was still brought down by the overused FBI/local PD jurisdictional drama. I personally wanted to see more of the ATF explosives expert, but she had zero effect on the plot resolution. The FBI agent from the previous book did more to help, and that was via a phone call. Strangely enough, there was only one brief appearance of Kelly's mother, and his daughter wasn't in the book at all; only a couple mentions. That just seemed off to me.
Either way, this was a fun/quick read that can be recommended to even first-timers of the series. Everything that happened and everyone who was in it didn't require prior knowledge to enjoy or understand. Keep them coming Brian!
- Reviewed in the United States on February 17, 2022This is the 4th of 5 Boston Crime Thriller books by Brian Shea and it is a spellbinding tale about a mysterious bomber who is a ghost when it comes to clues about who he is and why he is killing people.
Mike Kelly returns with his partner and love interest Kristen Barnes of the Boston Police Department teaming up with the FBI Special Agent Dan Langston, Cameron Salinger and ATF Agent Alexa Mills.
The team is on a mission to solve the prolific bomb assassin who in just a matter of days has planted more than a half dozen bombs that have killed numerous people. Some seem to be connected, but others are innocent people of a variety of ages.
Kelly’s boss, the iceman Detective Sergeant Halstead returns as will and his boss Boston Police Superintendent Juan Carlos Acevedo. Senior Boston Police Department Crime Scene Technician Raymond Charles and his young partner Trent Dawes also return to help solve the horrific crimes.
When FBI agents visit Liam Collins a jailed bomber who a copy cat seems to be using his bombing technics, he refuses to help the FBI, but agrees to talk with Michael Kelly because he was once employed by Kelly’s mob boss father.
Liam seems to be on the up and up telling the truth to Kelly about the connection of the targets and who is next on the list.
This is an intriguing tale that kept me reading late into the night. I absolutely could not put this well-written and developed episode down.
I recommend it to family, friends, and others who love a well-written crime thriller with twists and turns that will keep you on your seat guessing and trying to figure out the whodunit!
Enjoy!
- Reviewed in the United States on December 6, 2023This has been an outstanding series so far! Shea proved he can write books that keep a reader enthralled & on the edge of their seat. I've fallen in love with this man named Mike and his love of his city. Every twist & turn leads the reader deeper into the sensational storyline not sure what's next!
- Reviewed in the United States on May 8, 2021Mike Kelly is no Dave Robicheaux, Lucas Davenport or Spenser, but he's a good cop fighting the good fight with heart and intelligence. I think this is.Shea's best book yet. His plots and characters become more real with every book. You won't be disappointed. I gave it four stars instead of five, because I thought the ending was too easy.
- Reviewed in the United States on August 8, 2022This was a devastating, complex, and suspenseful thriller that will keep you guessing until the very end. A hidden past has come back to haunt several people, but unfortunately there are many others who also got caught in the blast. Will the many law enforcement agencies be able to figure it out before it's too late? You'll certainly want to read this book!
I would definitely recommend this book, series, and outstanding author.
- Reviewed in the United States on August 7, 2021Okay, so no one reads this series for the literary value, but admittedly these stories of the hard nose Boston Detective are a fun escape. And they are written well enough for that purpose. However, (spoiler alert) the big mystery in this book isn’t actually solved by good gumshoe detective work. It’s almost like the author was tired and needed to wrap things up quickly before leaving for vacation. There’s no twist, there is no surprise, just an abbreviated, silly end. I can’t image what Shea was thinking when he wrote the ending of this story. This is probably my last Shea book.
- Reviewed in the United States on April 10, 2021This story will have you on the edge of your seat from the very beginning, not letting you go until the explosive ending!! A fast-paced, action filled tale with a Boston cop, who loves his city and does his very best to keep the community safe...Michael Kelly is out jogging with his partner when the first bomb rips through the area right near them...Immediately they are off to the scene...And this bomber does Not stop there...It seems he has a plan to disrupt the lives of a select few...But is not worried about the devastation to so many others!!
The work and attention to every little detail from the entire team has them looking to an inmate for answers...But he is Not ready to talk! Can Kelly find this bomber, before his city suffers any more?!
I highly recommend this amazing story, and offer you my honest thoughts and feelings in this review.

5.0 out of 5 stars Terror in Boston
Can a couple of detectives catch an elusive serial bomber? He is always one step ahead. He manages to stay invisible. He is devious. This book is fast paced with a lot of action. I was hooked right from the beginning. A well written plot.

4.0 out of 5 stars A good read
This books a good read but not a great one as the previous books in this series have been. As always with Brian Shea it is very well written and researched and there is a good deal of tension in the book. But unfortunately as the book goes on the ending becomes more obvious and is slightly disappointing. Also the story gets bogged down with pages and pages of irrelevant information about witnesses and victims that have no impact on the story whatsoever which unfortunately made me skip a lot of pages but overall not a bad read if you have a few hours to spare and it still hasn't put me off downloading the next one in the series.
