- Reviewed in the United States on June 24, 2022DI Helen Grace is amazing. She is flawed but very strong. It gives her character believability. I hope the books keep coming. Love them!
- Reviewed in the United States on April 23, 2024I have not read anything by this author before. I will definitely read more in this series. Very good. This is a long book, but the author knows how to keep you interested in it. The writing is excellent.

- Reviewed in the United States on August 6, 2020If you love a good serial killer novel, M.J. Arlidge will never disappoint you with this series. I've read them all and look forward to the next one with anticipation.
- Reviewed in the United States on July 7, 2020This is the 9th book in this wonderfully written series by M. J. Arlidge. "You only have 1 hour to live."
Those are the only words on the phone call. Then they hang up. Surely, a prank? A mistake? A wrong number? Anything but the chilling truth… That someone is watching, waiting, working to take your life in one hour. Thus begins this exciting new novel in the DI Helen Grace series. What I enjoy are the short, fast paced and tense chapters which tends to move the novel along. The plot was a good one and held my attention to the end. I also liked the addition of DS Joseph Hudson in this book. Once again, will Helen catch this sadistic killer?
- Reviewed in the United States on July 25, 2020Loved it, she's such a powerful person and doesn't take care what anyone thinks.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 23, 2020I’ll give it a solid 3 stars...but I’m not sure why.. I dislike most of the characters, esp Helen Grace. I find her to be a ‘holier-than-thou’, know it all, whom everyone loves. The only person I did like was Jake, but he didn’t last long in the series. Poor fellow. But, I’ll keep reading the series, mainly hoping to see Helen get her comeuppance.

4.0 out of 5 stars Sometimes unrealistic
An easy-to-read yarn as usual, but a lot of occasions where the laws of physics and/or human physiology are suspended or stretched to their limits.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great story, excellent writing
I have read all the Aldridge books I can find, started with the first Helen Grace novel and built on that. Now I am starting again. I enjoy a brisk narrative with clear characters with clear story line. I am no literary critic but this authors books are well worth a read.

4.0 out of 5 stars A GRIPPING MYSTERY WITH GENUINE SURPRISES
M.J. Arlidge's 9th Helen Grace novel. My first - something instantly intriguing about the battlescarred biker DI, so formidable both on and off her Kawasaki.
Featured here are grim reminders of a notorious case eight years ago. Then five pupils on a Duke of Edinburgh Award course, got lost in fog, sought refuge in a dilapidated farm house, only there to be subjected to a terrifying ordeal in the hands of a deranged Daniel King. Four managed to escape, the building soon ablaze - this surely a ruse to allow King to flee and avoid capture.
Now Maxine, one of the survivors, has a best selling book describing those events - only for one of the others suddenly to be murdered and the lives of all to come under threat. Can crazed King be back to complete unfinished business? Sinister phone calls make intentions clear.
Result? Over five days a race against time, a battle of wits between Helen's team and a determined killer....
Although rather longer than some may wish, there is much to applaud in this telling. Short chapters certainly contribute to the overall pace. Even devotees of the genre, skilled at anticipating outcomes, may be taken aback by at least two of the twists. Admittedly the climatic chase may seem rather melodramatic, literally over the top, but the outcome generally satisfies.
Strong characterization, especially of Helen herself. Moving relationships between her and some of those close by - including ailing boss Simmons and pregnant colleague Charlie. At least one other, though, may pose an increasing problem. readers skilled at anticipating developments urging caution.
Helen surely now needs to recuperate. Not much chance of that, tenth in the series imminent if not already here. Very good news for her legion of fans.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Fantastic Read
Another brilliant read. Authors journalists are shackled down by time restraints and deadlines and when that happens. Writing and grammatical errors are inevitable. It is the editors job to remedy them. Please don’t blame the author.
Joseph Hudson’s foul temper and bullying behaviour towards his fellow officers and members of the public leaves a lot to be desired. He sure does not like it when things don’t go his way and behaves like a spoiled brat. I’ve met plenty like him. It will be interesting to see what happens to him.
Like all the Helen Grace stories, this one did not fail to grip me from the first to last page. I normally read for an hour before going to sleep but ended up going to sleep a lot later as I was itching to reach the end. It was worth it. There were quite a lot of negative comments. Please don’t be put off by them. Read the book and it will be a rewarding read.
