Virtually Impossible (High-Tech Crime Solvers Book 8) Kindle Edition

4.3 4.3 out of 5 stars 24 ratings

From USA Today Bestselling Author, Dr. Barbara Ebel, comes a gripping stand-alone medical suspense novel. In addition, the novel is part of a multi-author series tied together by an interlocking cast of characters.

This volume presents Dr. Hook Hookie, a Molecular Genetic Pathologist, whose high-tech genetic analysis equipment is stolen from right under his nose.

Concerted thievery abounds at Monument Medical Center in Atlanta!

Dr. Hook Hookie may have a prestigious educational and military background, but he now spends his days discovering the most intricate mysteries of the human genome. The elderly scientist also extrapolates genetic information that informs patients of their hereditary health risks--deadly or not.

But Dr. Hookie isn't the only one with a use for the high-tech genetic machinery - a villainess stalks the Medical Center, and she isn't interested in telling people if they're going to die from cancer.

Her thievery goes too far while the cat and mouse skulduggery mounts.

Maybe, just maybe, Dr. Hookie's expertise as a Genetic Pathologist will help solve the crimes!

★★★★★ "Ebel's on par with the best works of Robin Cook and Michael Crichton."

Barbara Ebel is an award-winning and USA Today Bestselling Author who sprinkles credible medicine into the background of her medical suspense novels. Since she is a physician and specialized in Anesthesiology, her operating room scenes shine. However, her vivid characters and plots take center stage.

She has penned two medical suspense series, a separate medical novel, and five children’s books about her therapy dog.

“Doctor Barbara’s” Dr. Annabel Tilson series includes six books (which can each stand alone), and is based on a female medical sleuth who promises exciting times on the wards as well as in her personal life. Two books in the series have won awards: Death Grip, the 4th book, won the 2018 NIEA award (National Indie Excellence Award), and Deadly Delusions won the 2017 Kindle Book Awards Semi-Finalist for thrillers.

Her first series, the Dr. Danny Tilson novels, takes place in Tennessee and is based on a neurosurgeon who has his hands full in the O.R. as well as in his personal life due to a female villainess, a favorite character of readers (who have a love-hate relationship with her). Dr. Danny’s third book, Collateral Circulation, was the 2015 National Indie Excellence Awards Finalist for Medical Thrillers. Operation Neurosurgeon, the first book in the series, was the top finalist for best-selling medical mystery books in 2012. (Best Selling Books' blog announced on PR Buzz Press Release Wire, Chicago, IL).

Dr. Ebel lives in a natural wildlife corridor in Tennessee with her husband and dogs. She maintains an active, non-clinical role in medicine, and loves to hear from readers.

When I am able to learn something new in a novel, I am delighted. In this one, I learned about DNA and how it is tested and also the benefits of genetic testing. Those portions of this novel were indeed fascinating and interesting to me. I had heard of this but never knew exactly what could be determined with the testing and the importance it could mean for an individual. So, now I know.

In addition to the genetic portion, the author has written an intriguing novel which is full of suspense and intrigue. An entire gamut of characters fill these pages....unsavory as well as truly delightful. Dr. Hook Hookie is a Molecular Genetic Pathologist and, as should be, he is indeed the star. Loved his military background...Veteran of Nam...and also loved his gray ponytail! He may be in his early 70's but his mind is still sharp as a razor blade...

Monument Medical Center in Atlanta, GA, is the location for the majority of this novel. Dr. Hook Hookie has two most interesting 'lab rats' at his side to assist him...Cynthia and Alex. The author has an outstanding grasp on the romantic side of youth...as well as the older Dr. Hook Hookie and his wife, Susan. She explains how love ages gracefully with the older couple and I loved her grasp of human nature.

The story itself evolves around mysterious thefts of high priced equipment in the hospital. High value machinery is disappearing....as if into thin air...What in the world is going on and who is (or are) the perps? Then, the heists change direction and the reader is left to wonder ...once again...what is going on here?

A multi-layered plot keeps the readers guessing throughout, the characters are well developed and any loose ends are tied up at the conclusion. Dr. Hook Hookie does indeed solve one of the mysteries due to his knowledge and expertise in the medical field.

All in all, a most intriguing read filled with a lot of education concerning genetics. So glad that I read this one.

Most highly recommended.

But a bit wordy. Medical equipment , i.e. EKG and genetic testing machines , went missing from an Atlanta medical facility. Then paintings from the same place . A sharp genetic scientist started putting things together .
A short story , a bit bland for me. Also , the author used capital letters on the first page of each chapter. One at the top is okay, all down the page is overdoing it.

Such an enjoyable read. I love Dr. Hookie. This book is a fun read and I learned some interesting things. The characters are great as they deal with problems at the high tech medical center. Genetics is fascinating and these cases they are working on are both interesting and informative. If you enjoy Dr. Ebel's medical mysteries, you will love this one.

Sorry, Barbara and readers, I am not as eloquent as others in my reviews. I either like a book or I don't. I can tell you that I did like this book as well as her other books and look forward to each one. The book was shorter than her others, but that didn't matter. The story was told. I don't care for books that seem to have extra words just to make the book longer. It was interesting that this one was about genetics and the timing. A genetic disease has recently been diagnosed in a family member and it has been recommended that other family members be tested. I am still learning about this side of genetics, but now I understand a bit more.
