Oath Sworn (Jacky Leon Book 1) Kindle Edition

4.5 4.5 out of 5 stars 5,827 ratings

I’ve never been the type to find trouble. Owning a bar takes work and that was all I wanted. Serving cold beers and paying my taxes. Those were the responsibilities I wanted for the rest of my life.

I didn’t ask to be a werecat. I didn’t ask for the responsibility to uphold an ancient treaty. I didn’t ask to get pulled into the middle of a werewolf pack’s coup.

But Carey Everson, the very human daughter of a werewolf Alpha, needs me. Her father’s enemies are on her heels and I’m her last defense. And I’ll be that defense until my final breath, even if it means challenging the very Laws that govern the supernatural. I gave her my word.

My name is Jacky Leon and nothing is going to stop me from honoring my word.

The Jacky Leon series is an Urban Fantasy series with a slow-burn romance.

Oh wow, this is a very cool and surprising female heroine with an unusual job to do. Jackie is a solitary werecat, a giant and ruthless one when she goes through the change. Like many big cats everywhere, she chooses to keep to herself, staying in her own territory, minding her own business. Her human side is busy running her little bar five nights a week, this is the comforting though lonely pattern of her life…until the surprising night an 11 year old human girl with a werewolf dad asks for protection. By supernatural law, she is Duty Bound to protect a human asking for help and instantly accepts the responsibility, and to her surprise, becoming instantly bonded to the courageous, little girl. Then all hell breaks loose!
This is a great, page turning read with plots unlike anything else I’ve read and I read a lot of supernatural type fiction. Ha, I am so late starting my day right now because I HAD to read the ending. Excellent paranormal story/series I just found on Kindle Unlimited. Well written, I look forward to book 2

4.75 STARS 🌟

While reading, if I paused, I found myself eager to resume as this is a really good book! What made me hesitate in giving it 5 stars was due to her meeting the love interest, as I felt she suddenly went from Alpha to Beta.

The synopsis read like about 50% of other female-centered urban fantasy. The cover is terrible. I thought a werecat sounded interesting and rolled the dice. Very glad I did.
Solid plot, excellent world building (no info dumps), consistent and rational internal mythology. Even when things are implied rather than explained (there's witches in this world, and vampires, but none of them are anything more than tertiary characters at most, so their powers/mythology aren't very clear), it fits into the overall "rules" of the author's world. The book is well edited, too. There's NO useless romantic subplot!
Jacky is a person, not a caricature or a wish fulfillment or a trope. She's tough, and strong, but it never goes over the line into the cliche of "mysteriously powerful like no one has ever seen before." Carey, the child she's protecting, isn't cloying sweet, oddly powerful, or fated to be safe the world. There isn't any of the "snarky, wisecracking female main character" theme currently glutting the urban fantasy genre.
It's a good story with excellent characters and a plot that moves along steadily, without dragging in spots and rushing in others. I read a lot of urban fantasy, and there are a lot of typical traps books like these fall into. Overpowered main characters. Underdeveloped secondary characters. Infodumps. Pointless bickering to demonstrate a character 's cleverness. World building that overexplains, underexplains, or fumbles show vs. tell. Oath Sworn neatly avoids them, and that's honestly so unusual that I can forgive a few flaws in the story.

My 15 year old granddaughter insisted that I read this book and the ones that follow it. I have thoroughly enjoyed this as a different, intelligent and not sappy, well told story, without silly overly romantic drivel that seems to stalk these genres of books. This is exactly why she recommended this series and likes them herself.

Have to say I wasn’t sure what I was going to think of this book but it’s a good start to the series.
I like Jacky and what she stands by. Totally understand her strengths and beliefs. She’s determined to do what’s right as a werecat she’s pretty interesting. Hmm, I’m curious as to what her and Heath will get into next so I’ll definitely continue with the next book.

I loved this. A lot.

I love the writing. It flows amazingly well and keeps me in Jacky’s thoughts as she goes through the book. It was a little shaky in the beginning but once she started moving, I was sold. Impressed. Relieved to have found something that I’ve been looking for, for a while now. A few were let downs and DNF before the first chapter but I’m so glad this book gave me that and so much more.

Jacky lives in a world where the supernatural are slowly coming out. And she’s cool with that. Then she has to deal with them while remaining secret? Awesome. And then there’s the different introductions of magical species and their own little spins on the main plot. Loved it.

The twist was surprising and all of it, as it is war, was heartbreaking enough to make me sad in the end. But also happy with the way things ended.

Overall a definite recommend.

I was a bit skeptical because I'm not really a werecat fan, but this was okay.
A bit repetitive, definitely spent the first few chapters reminding you that she was a werecat, which got a tad annoying.
The Laws needed a bit of clean-up, though. It didn't really make sense that werecats were supposed to be protectors, but there wasn't any recourse if their position wasn't respected.
Jacky is a decent female lead. She's not timid but shows her vulnerability and isn't a man hater. She was easy to relate to. The rest of the characters could use some fleshing out. Jacky isn't the only character in this story. Keep the others interesting, too, but just pop up cardboard cutouts when you need one.

Il libro stenta a partire, per almeno il 40% sono in fuga e francamente è piuttosto ripetitivo, poi finalmente la storia prende piede. Nel complesso è stata una lettera piacevole e leggerò il seguito

I’m kind of confused about this book. It reminded me a bit too much of Mercy Thompson for my taste. However it’s well written and the story is good. I’ll read the second book and decide later.

Jackie is a werecat who is honorable. What I like most of all about the story is she does the right thing even if it means her own life is on the line. That and the fact that she doesn’t become a drooling mess over the male lead.
